March 2013
It is with mixed emotions that we share the loss of the last charter member at
Hills Chapel. Bertha Newman finished her race on this earth February 1, 2013
at the age of 95. She was a member of the Hills Chapel family for about 89
years. Throughout her life, she served the church as first elder, Sunday school
teacher, song leader, youth leader, and any other position that needed filled.
Bert’s life was a living demonstration of the Great Commission. She not only
made disciple making the priority in her life, she also was committed to
teaching the Word of God to both
young and old alike. In fact, she
taught the teen Sunday school class
until about a year ago and was still
leading the children’s songs every
Sunday.
Throughout Bert’s life, her obedience
and willingness to share the love of
Christ led many people to the Lord.
This was evident at both her visitation
and funeral, as many shared the
impact her life had made in their
Christian walk.
While she will be missed by her
church family, we cannot help but to
celebrate the victory death provided
her. Because of her faith in Christ
and His amazing love. She is now
sharing in the abundant blessings of
being in the presence of her Savior.
It is hard to not think of some of Paul’s final words found in II Timothy 4

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I
have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the
crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous
Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but
also to all who have loved His appearing.”
Blessed
As I consider the church family God has allowed me to pastor, I can’t help but
to be grateful. Not only do they demonstrate a huge amount of patience with
me, they are ready and willing to serve God and others in whatever ways they
can.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank you for all that you do
and tell you that I am thankful for each one of you and the amazing opportunity
that God has provided for us to grow together in our spiritual walk. I can’t wait
to see the things He has planned for us!

On February 10th the congregation sang Happy Birthday to nine who
were celebrating a birthday in February. Our church all wore pink or red
as we were celebrating Love Sunday. After Sunday School the children
and adults had a program and sang songs. They did a good job. There
were approximately 25 boys and girls and they are all so talented.
After church on February 17th the children went bowling and had
pizza. They all had a good time and some of them got strikes. There
were 27 children and 12 adults who enjoyed the day.
On February 24th a few from our church went to the home of Mr. &
Mrs. Darrell Myers Sr. and sang some hymns and had prayer and visited
a while. Mr. Myers is very ill and cannot get out. After we left there we
went to the home of Cline and Pat McFarland and visited. Cline is unable
to get out. He played his guitar while we sang some hymns. Pastor
Myers read some scripture and had prayer. It was a blessing for
everyone.
We will be having communion on March 24th and Sharon Campbell
will be singing. We will also be visiting the shut-ins that afternoon
Easter is March 31st and the children will be having a small program.
We whish everyone a Happy and Blessed Easter.
I serve a risen Savior. He’s in the world today;
I know that He is living, whatever men may say.
I see His hands of mercy, I hear his voice of cheer,
And just the time I need him He’s always near.

We enjoyed a good time of song, praise, and testimony on the evening of February 24th
with music from Corbett Phipps and The Praise Singers. Pastor Tommy spoke about
how even songs and hymns can reach a lost soul and the goodness of singing for God.
It was so good to have lots of visitors – a full church house – many from West Union CU
Church. We all took pleasure in fellowship and a spread of desserts and goodies after
service. What a BLESSING!
James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and
let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 And the prayer
of faith will save the sick the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. As it seems the list
grows daily, we are praying for many with illness and other problems. Please remember
in prayer, from our congregation, Jackie Brown, Rachel Newman, Wanda McCarty, and
Mike Grooms. And, if you are well and healthy, remember to praise the Lord!
As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, tune in to 89.5, King of Kings Radio, for
uplifting songs and listening.
For readers, Mary Lou Grooms recommends, The Harbinger by Jonathan Cahn.
Also, tune in to the History Channel on Sundays at 8:00pm during the month of March
for “The Bible.”
Pastor Tommy Brown will be holding services at Cornerstone Christian
Union Church on April 18, 19, and 20. He invites everyone to join him.

Our youth held a “Sleep Over” in the Fellowship Bldg. Feb 28 th-March
1st Robin Young and Rada Brown supervised it and reported that 15
enjoyed an evening of fun with games, movies and pizza, but little
sleep. They reported the new flat screen TV had been installed by
Steve Harris on Friday, Feb 27th. A portable Ping Pong table was
donated by Brian and Bridget Kitchen. Breakfast for all was prepared
by Helena Grooms, Mary Fite and Brenda Mahaffey. We are proud of
how our youth program is growing.
The Ladies Aide will meet March 7th at the fellowship hall. The hostess
