Some common Latin-based Science words used in English : Biology & Chemistry
Many of our words used in the sciences come from Latin (in fact, the very word “science” comes from the Latin noun scientia
(knowledge). During the Renaissance in Europe and into later centuries, the fathers and mothers of modern science looked back to the
knowledge from the ancient world (which was just becoming “rediscovered” by intellectuals of the time) as models of their new
scientific disciplines. Thus many scientific words come from Latin (as well as ancient Greek). There are literally thousands upon
thousands of these words, but we will just look at a few regarding the science of Chemistry and Biology. The Periodic Table is the
listing of all known elements, and many of these elements get their names from Latin. All animals, plants, and assported living
organisms all have an official Latin name for classification purposes: These are only a sample of thousands and thousands of
examples of Latin words in the sciences...
