The Leaf
Message from Paul
I am in the classroom this week and next, exploring the physics of
sailing with Middle School. We have thought about wind and how the
forces on the sail and the keel combine to move the boat forward.
Using an old jib hoisted on the school flagpole we’ve demonstrated
how the sail functions as an airfoil. Next we will look at currents and
tide. I am reminded of the first time our three young sons set off by
themselves in a little sailing pram. They raised the sail and took off
across the cove, running downwind. But then they had to sail back, to
windward. It took a while, but they figured out the physics and made it
home for supper. To borrow from The Wind in the Willows, for
learning physics, “there is nothing – absolutely nothing - half so much
worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”
The Raise Craze fundraiser will officially begin Friday, February 3rd and will end on Friday, February 17th. Please have your fundraiser webpages set up no later than Wednesday, February 1st. Instructions can be found at this link on

Thank you to Diana Norma Shafer for sharing her passion and
expertise.
The polynomial squaring and cubing units build on what the
children have learned in previous math units, especially work
with the commutative and distributive laws of multiplication, as
well as work with multiples and factors. It is a deep
investigation of the geometric patterns that result from squaring
and cubing and prepares the child for square root, cube root,
powers of numbers, and algebra. The brilliance of the material
is that it affords the ability to explore complex mathematical
concepts through a process that is so precise, that it is
beautiful.
Some children have been known to say, "It's like magic!”
