The Reproductive System Reproduction is the process by which a new offspring is produced. This process begins when a male reproductive cell called a sperm is joined to female reproductive cell called an egg or ovum (plural ova). The Male Reproductive Organs Testes Penis The main male reproductive organs are the testes, which produce sperm cells. The penis is used to transfer sperm cells to the female body. 1 © caribbeanexams Female Reproductive Organs Ovary Fallopian tubes Uterus/womb Vagina The main female reproductive organs are the ovaries. The ovaries produce the eggs or ova. When the ovary releases an egg, it passes into a tube called the fallopian tube or oviduct. Sperm cells enter the female body through the vagina. When the male and female cells join together fertilization takes place. Fertilization usually occurs in the fallopian tube. The fertilized egg travels through the fallopian tube to the womb or uterus where it grows and develops. After about nine months, the fertilized egg has grown into a fully developed baby, which usually leaves the body through the vagina. 2 © caribbeanexams
