Pet Retail Franchise Pet Supplies Plus Breaks into New Regions in First Half
of 2016
High Demand for Pet Products and Services Lays Groundwork for Strong Q1, Q2
Growth
LIVONIA, Mich. (July 11, 2016) – The first six months of 2016 have yielded continued growth for Pet
Supplies Plus, following a robust 2015 that featured 26 total franchise deals for 36 units. Since the start
of the New Year, the nation’s largest pet franchise has already inked nearly 20 deals across the country
resulting in 55 new stores – 19 more than the 2015 year-end total. This accelerated growth is also
coupled with the news that Pet Supplies Plus is happy to announce entry into three new states –
California, Colorado and Oklahoma – and is furthering its expansion in the states of New Jersey, Texas,
Missouri, Iowa and Georgia.
For Pet Supplies Plus, the deals in Oklahoma, Colorado and California mark the first signs of growth in
territories in Western United States. The pet store also recently locked in a 10-unit deal in Kansas City,
marking its first presence in the city. In total, Pet Supplies Plus is on target to open approximately 60
new stores by the end of the year.
“Consumers pumped more than $60 billion into the pet industry by the close of 2015, $2 billion more
than 2014. With the spending came a drastic need for an increase in pet products and supplies stores
across the United States,” said David Leonardo, senior vice president for franchising at Pet Supplies Plus.
“The steady growth of the pet industry is credited to cognizant pet owners looking for natural products
for their pets and an increase in the amount of households with pets, which is now roughly 75 percent
of the country. Pet Supplies Plus’ growth is exceeding that of the industry and on track to open 55
locations this year, a record year for the company.”
In late May, Pet Supplies Plus closed deals of 15 stores in Texas and three units in New Jersey – states
where the pet retail store already has a significant presence. In June Pet Supplies Plus also inked a 10unit deal in Kansas City and signed agreements for the new markets of Colorado (Denver), Iowa and
Oklahoma.
To help accelerate the growth and expansion out west, Pet Supplies Plus will be converting several Pet
Extreme stores in California to Pet Supplies Plus establishments after acquiring the California-based 10unit pet retail chain in the fourth quarter of 2015. The growth into new territories indicates an increase
in new business owners and the expansion in active states is a result of current Pet Supplies Plus store
owners saturating several in-state markets.
“The expansion into new markets and growth in existing markets shows the positive influence of Pet
Supplies Plus throughout the country,” Leonardo said. “We are excited to bring the people of California,
Iowa, Georgia, Oklahoma, Missouri, Colorado, New Jersey and Texas quality products and an
educational experience on how to best care for their pets. After acquiring Pet Extreme in California,
we’re also looking forward to rebranding and remodeling the stores to demonstrate the consistent,
dependable Pet Supplies Plus name to our new neighbors.”
Last year, Pet Supplies Plus announced a reduction of royalty fees from 4 percent to 2 percent for the
first 12 months of a new franchise agreement. Following a franchisee’s first year, the royalty fee remains
at 3 percent for the life of the franchise agreement. The reduction opens the franchise opportunity to a
broader range of candidates and helps qualified candidates open stores at a faster rate. Pet Supplies
Plus has also attracted franchisee candidates from different industries, including QSR food brands and
grocers seeking to expand their portfolios into the pet retail space.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
America’s Favorite Neighborhood Pet Store Headed to Oklahoma
Pet Supplies Plus Inks Franchise Deal for First Oklahoma Locations
OKLAHOMA CITY – The state of Oklahoma will soon be home to America’s favorite neighborhood pet
store. Pet Supplies Plus, the more than 360-unit retailer celebrated for its varied array of pet goods,
grooming services, animal expertise and more, announced the signing of a franchise agreement with
local entrepreneurs Brian Mott and Shaun Frankfort. The agreement, which allows the business owners
to open up four stores in Oklahoma over the next three years, marks the first Pet Supplies Plus presence
in the state.
The first store is scheduled to open in early 2017. The deal covers the counties of Oklahoma, Canadian
and Cleveland.
Founded in 1988, Pet Supplies Plus shines in the congested retail segment by offering pets and pet
parents a wider array of toys, equipment and Made-in-the-USA pet consumables such as wet and dry
foods, treats, rawhide, chews and more. Pet Supplies Plus also features an extensive selection of natural
foods that do not contain any chemically synthetic additives or ingredients, which will make it easier for
Oklahoma residents to provide their pets with healthy meals.
In addition to offering area pets quality products and knowledgeable insight from a highly-trained staff,
the Oklahoma pet centers will benefit the community by bringing dozens of jobs to town and
approximately $250,000 in local development contracts.
Mott and Frankfort said they chose to open the Pet Supplies Plus stores based on the brand’s admirable
reputation, as well as having seen the local consumer demand increase for quality pet goods and
services. In total, approximately 75 percent of U.S. households own a pet (equating for 93.5 million
homes), and the industry accounted for $60 billion in consumer spending in 2016.
“When we decided to open our business, we wanted to choose a franchise that we could take pride in –
one that makes an impact in the lives of people, their pets and the local community,” said Mott,
franchise partner of the Pet Supplies Plus of Oklahoma. “Pet Supplies Plus truly understands that special
bond between owners and their pets, and that philosophy played a major role in our business decision.”
Although the retail chain was founded nearly 30 years ago, the Oklahoma locations won’t resemble your
father’s Pet Supplies Plus – or even your older brother’s for that matter. The new locations will be built
using the new Pet Supplies Plus prototype, which includes a new store design layout that boasts a fresh
color scheme and emphasizes convenience, functionality and pet interaction.
As the pet care industry continues to grow, Pet Supplies Plus is setting its sights on a strategic franchise
development strategy to grow the brand in underserved markets. Company executives expect to open
more stores in Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, Iowa and California in the next five years, and to expedite the
process, they are recruiting well-qualified single and multi-unit franchise partners to operate the
locations. The strong general consumer appeal combined with the proven Pet Supplies Plus operating
model, provides a unique investment opportunity for prospective entrepreneurs.
“While we’re poised for major growth, we’re focused on expanding the right way by partnering with
business savvy franchise partners, like Brian and Shaun, who share an enthusiasm for pets and a
dedication to becoming an integral part of the community,” said David Leonardo, Senior Vice President
for Franchising at Pet Supplies Plus.
Founded on the idea that convenient, quality service for busy neighbors was lacking in the pet industry,
retail veterans Jack Berry and Harry Shallop opened the first Pet Supplies Plus store in Redford,
Michigan. Since then, the neighborhood-style pet store has become a household name in 27 states.

Livonia-based Pet Supplies Plus leads
in growing industry
By Blake Froling
The pet supply industry is riding high, and
Livonia-based Pet Supplies Plus is
leading the pack.
The retail franchise chain is expanding at a
rapid rate, signing 20 deals across the
country resulting in 55 new stores this
year; that's 19 more than 2015. That brings
its total to 360 stores nationwide, with 57 in
Michigan.
The company employs about 900 employees in Michigan between franchise and
company locations, according to David Leonardo, senior vice president for franchising.
In terms of sales, revenue and number of stores nationwide, Pet Supplies Plus is the
leading pet franchise chain. Competitors Petco Animal Supplies Inc. and PetSmart
Inc. have more than 1,800 company-owned stores and achieve a 17 percent market
share, according to Franchise Direct, but do not offer franchises.
Why is Pet Supplies Plus expanding so quickly? The market is expanding. Total U.S.
pet industry expenditures reached $60.28 billion in 2015 and are projected to rise to
$62.75 billion in 2016, according to the American Pet Products Association.
"With the spending came a drastic need for an increase in pet products and supplies
stores across the United States," Leonardo said in a statement. "The steady growth of
the pet industry is credited to cognizant pet owners looking for natural products for their
pets and an increase in the amount of households with pets … Pet Supplies Plus'
growth is exceeding that of the industry and on track to open 55 locations this year, a
record year for the company."
Average store revenue in 2015 was $2.5 million per store, "with some growth in 2016,"
according to Leonardo.
It helps to have a massive customer base. According to the APPA national pet owners
survey, 65 percent of U.S. households own a pet, which equals about 79.7 million
homes. Even more important is the total number of pets owned, with freshwater fish
leading the way at 95.5 million and cats right behind at 85.8 million. Sorry dog lovers,
canines are in third at 77.8 million.
However, live animal sales make up only a small portion of industry expenditures at 3.5
percent in 2015. Leonardo said live animal sales make up less than 10 percent of Pet
Supplies Plus' revenue. Food is the largest portion of the market at 38 percent, or
$23.05 billion.
Bob Vetere, president and CEO of APPA, said consumers are looking for more allnatural and organic products for their pets, just as they are for themselves. "I always say
just look what happens in human food, wait three months and it'll happen in pet foods,"
Vetere said.
Leonardo has seen the same trend in the industry. "There has been a push to buy more
local and get more fresh higher-quality food for family and pets. This benefits us as we
carry double the assortment of natural foods for pets than Petsmart and Petco and we
are located close to homes," he said.
Another factor in the growth of the pet supply industry is that it never seems to be
dogged by recession.
Since 1994, when the information was first available, the industry has grown every year
by at least $1 billion, according to the APPA. From 2006 to 2011, the industry grew by
32 percent, at a time when other industries were happy to break even.
"I like to call it recession resistant," Vetere said. "2008 was what convinced me.
Everyone was cutting back and pet ownership went up. They cut back … all to make
sure they could take care of their pets."
Leonardo said the company has yet to have a negative year in the brand's history.
"Our biggest years were during times of recession as more people tend to stay home
and nest, which results in pampering your dog and kids but less of the vacationing and
buying of toys," he said.
This kind of almost guaranteed growth may make potential investors feel safer about
the pet industry and more willing to open more stores. Vetere refers to the
"humanization" of pets in society and how people treat their animals like a part of the
family as a main reason why recession doesn't affect the industry much.
"People began to reward their pets in human terms," Vetere said. "Special treat, special
collar, special bed. They feel better having rewarded their pet in meaningful terms."
To help facilitate its growth, Pet Supplies Plus reduced its franchise royalty fees from 4
percent to 2 percent for the first 12 months of operation. Following the first year, the fee
increases to 3 percent for the lifetime of the deal. It costs $500,000-$750,000 for a
franchisee to open a Pet Supplies Plus store.
"We recognize that the first years of a business are the hardest and so we wanted to
make sure that our franchisees don't have the pressure of high royalty rates, especially
as they try and grow the business," Leonardo said. "This reduction in royalty saves a
franchisee about $25,000 a year and by driving more profitability to our franchisees'
bottom line, they (have) more incentive to grow more units."
Pet Supplies Plus is moving into new states, including California, Colorado and
Oklahoma. The chain also acquired California-based Pet Extreme in 2015, which had
10 units in the state, and is turning them into Pet Supplies Plus stores.
In a time when online shopping is crippling big brick-and-mortar stores and retailers are
selling more products on the web, it seems curious that Pet Supplies Plus would be
bucking the trend and expanding its presence. But Leonardo said online represents only
single-digit market share of total pet spending. Why is that?
"They also want a connection with their retailer and we feel that our staff has been able
to create that special bond, given the size of our locations and the intimacy with our
neighborhood," Leonardo said.
But Leonardo also knows how important it is to have an online presence and said Pet
Supplies Plus will be launching its own e-commerce capabilities in 2017.
So will this constant growth ever slow down? Is this just one big bubble waiting to burst?
Vetere said his former boss quit 14 years ago because he was convinced the growth
was done and the industry was bound to plateau or go down. Vetere thought that might
happen once baby boomers started turning 70 years old and stopped replacing pets.
"But all of a sudden, millennials have stepped up like I never thought they would,"
Vetere said. "I think that millennials are going backfill the baby boomers nicely."
Pet Supplies Plus plans 10 area
locations; first will be in Lenexa
BY JOYCE SMITH

The rapidly expanding Pet
Supplies Plus plans 10
locations for Kansas City in the
next four years.
The Livonia, Mich.-based
company has signed a deal
with B&B Pet Products LLC of
Hurst, Texas. B&B plans to
have the first area location
open in December and is final
negotiations for a space in Lenexa. The second location is scheduled to open in
the second quarter of 2017.
Greg McMillan is the owner. His nephew Todd Shae, along with Greg’s son, Clay
McMillan, 25, and daughter, Perry McMillan, 22, will have equity in B&B and will
relocate to Kansas City to oversee the operations.
The American Pet Products Association said pet industry spending was $60.28
billion in 2015, up from $36.3 billion in 2005. It estimates sales to be $62.75
billion this year.
“But we haven’t seen competition keep up with the growth and demand in many
pockets, and Kansas City is one of those pockets,” said Greg McMillan.
The stores, which are typically 8,000-10,000 square feet, offer a wide selection of
pet food, pet products and grooming services. They also sell birds and fish.
Pet Supplies Plus also signed new franchisee agreements for California, Colorado
and Oklahoma. It plans to open 60 new stores this year. It currently has more
than 360 locations in 27 states.
Pet Supplies Plus heads west
JULY 12, 2016 | BY DAN BERTHIAUME
Specialty pet retailer Pet Supplies Plus is entering
three new states as part of an aggressive 2016
expansion plan.
The chain is entering California, Colorado and
Oklahoma, as well as furthering its expansion in the
states of New Jersey, Texas, Missouri, Iowa and
Georgia. In addition, Pet Supplies Plus recently
signed a deal to open 10 new stores in Kansas City,
and is on target to open approximately 60 new
stores by the end of the year.
Growth for the year will include 20 franchise deals for 55 new stores across the country signed in the
first half of 2016. In 2015, Pet Supplies Plus signed 26 total franchise deals for 36 new stores.
To help accelerate Western growth and expansion, the retailer will be converting several Pet
Extreme stores in California to Pet Supplies Plus establishments after acquiring the California-based
10-unit pet retail chain in fourth quarter 2015. Currently, Pet Supplies Plus operates more than 360
stores in 27 states.
