Mark
Twain
Cave
“No man knew the cave: that was an impossible
thing. Most of the young men knew a portion of it
and it was not customary to venture much beyond
this known portion. Tom Sawyer knew as much of
the cave as anyone.”
– Mark Twain
You will have the same exciting
experience as Tom Sawyer and
Becky Thatcher did exploring this
remarkable cave so many years
ago. An experienced guide will
escort you on the 55 minute circular
tour. Persons of any age can easily
make the tour. Walkways are level
and smooth, there are no stairs to navigate, and the tour is
lighted completely. So bring your camera and wear sensible
walking shoes. A light jacket is suggested as the cave is a
constant 52˚ year round!
Special Tours
Total Eclipse Tour
Mark Twain wrote:
“By and by somebody shouted ‘Who’s ready for the cave?’
Everybody was. Bundles of candles were procured and
straightaway there was a general scamper up the hill. The
mouth of the cave was up the hillside - an opening shaped
like a letter A. Within was a small chamber chilly as an icehouse and walled by nature with solid limestone that was
dewy with cold sweat.”
– Excerpt from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
This Total (lunar) Eclipse tour will
take you into total darkness and
to the farthest known passages of
Cameron Cave. Get ready to get
muddy with a buddy and have the
time of your life! You will go to The
Swamp and to Bucket Junction.
For this 2 to 2.5 hour tour you must be able to army crawl
about 20 feet. You can not be claustrophobic. Bring old
clothes and shower supplies. MINIMUM 4 RESERVATIONS

Cameron
Cave
First Exploring Party
February 1925
Located within the Mark Twain Cave
Complex, Cameron Cave is one of Missouri’s
most recent cave discoveries. Located
underneath the former Cameron Dairy
property, the cave was discovered by the
dairy owner, Arch Cameron in 1925. One
day Arch saw steam rising out of a sink hole
and started digging on a hot ledge. He then
gathered an exploration party and eventually
discovered this remarkable cave which is
actually larger than the Mark Twain Cave.
Guided lantern tours of this complex maze
cave are given each day during the summer.
The Mark Twain Cave Complex boasts a
beautiful campground with 99 campsites.
There are a variety of sites to choose from.
Some sites are shaded to help campers
keep cool or read a book. Other sites are in
sunny areas, which is great for those wanting
optimum internet or cell phone reception.
The Mark Twain Cave neighbors a family
fun park right across the highway. For your
convenience, we also have an area for
campers to do laundry and a very nice camp
store, called Smallmart. We have club and
individual rates along with discounted rates
on multiple night stays. If you stay six nights
the seventh night is free. Enjloy camping,
hiking trail, wildlife, Mark Twain & Cameron
Caves, and other complex facilities...we work
hard to make your stay easy.
Ghosts, Heroes & Villains - October only
This exciting new tour features the stories of the names that
make up the wall of this most famous cave. Find out who
else besides Samuel Clemens walked the limestone paths
that make up the tours today.
Learn the history of the cave and hear stories of famous
characters! You’ll be intrigued by the eccentric Dr.
Joseph McDowell and the medical experiments
he performed in the cave. See where Jesse
James’ hideout was in the cave! Visit where Artist
Norman Rockwell was inspired and spooked
by the cave...and learn the fate of Injun Joe.
These stories, along with the beautiful limestone
formations, will entertain the entire family and
create lifelong memories!
