From the Principal
We are excited to report that our extended school days will begin at Doss next week. As a result of
our core belief #4: Instruction, assessment, and grading in every classroom is based on student
mastery of standards, we want to provide every intervention possible to ensure that our students
are meeting proficiency benchmarks in every standard. Therefore, even if a student is not
successful on their first attempt on an assessment in a class, they still have multiple opportunities
to stay after school with teachers for additional assistance and retake any assessment for full
credit. This year, we will be calling our extended school time “application plus” or A+ time. A+ days
will always be on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. We will have buses return to
pick students up at approximately 4:45 p.m. to transport them home. Please encourage your child
to stay after school on every application day at Doss for A+ time. This gives them the opportunity
for additional assistance in smaller settings with teachers, make up missed assignments, and retake
any assessments. If you have any questions about A+ time, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We
are truly committed to ensuring that every one of our students becomes proficient in their essential
standards for every single course at Doss.

THE FINANCE ACADEMY
The Finance Academy would like to spotlight an exceptional Doss student this week. Kristine “KC”
Zsigray was recommended by her teachers because of her motivation, natural inquisitiveness, and
willingness to help others.
KC says: “As a Doss High School student, I have learned a lot.
Not only academic things, but a lot of things about life and
what I want to do in life. During my time here I have
discovered that I want to become an accountant. At first, the
idea of becoming an accountant sounded really boring, but
Mrs. Beck and Mrs. Lovett, my accounting teachers, have
shown me otherwise. They have encouraged me to pursue my
dreams and have led me through many different pathways
when it comes to accounting. The academy system here at
school has really allowed me to focus on my career goals and
helped me to explore different aspects of accounting.”
We are proud of your efforts, KC, and look forward to seeing what you do in the future!

THE TECH AND DESIGN ACADEMY
The Tech/Design Academy will begin spotlighting our students in the weekly newsletter. Each
week, we will select a deserving student who is exceeding expectations in and out of the classroom
at Doss High School. We have been extremely proud of the work our students have been producing
and would like to showcase it for parents and the community.
Tech and Design Academy Student of the Week: James Boada
GPA: 3.8
Family: 9th grade brother who attends Doss and a sister in the 5th
grade
Pathway: Programming and App Development
What do you like most about the Tech Academy?
I like that we get to use technology in all aspects of our education. In
the past, it was just book work and that could be kind of boring. Using
technology is what I love.
Favorite activity so far in the Academy?
In Mr. Haws class, we have been developing our own websites. Each
day we take a small piece of developing the website and we add it onto what we learned the day
before. I am really looking forward to being able to develop my own computer game. I can’t wait to
get started on the making the video games. That’s what I really love to do. I also enjoy the Project
Based Learning we are using in the Academy. Any way that technology can be tied into my other
classes, that’s what I want.
What do you want to do when you leave Doss?
I want to develop computer video games and software.
What do you do in your spare time?
I play computer games. I play clarinet in the band at Doss. I also enjoy playing the piano. I also
really enjoy studying about theories of science. Anything that has to do with space or relativity. It’s
something that I really like to study and learn about. We have already started talking about some of
these topics in Mr. Bressman’s Chemistry class. I have really enjoyed that as well.

THE BUSINESS ACADEMY
This week the Business Academy will highlight the PBL activities taking place in two of our business
classes. Over the course of the next few weeks, students in Ms. Kent and Ms. Machin’s marketing
classes will look to tackle the driving question of “how can we maximize profit in our vending
machines while complying with the new Smart Snacks law?” As part of the project students will
reinvent the school vending machines in order to make a profit while staying within the new law.
Students working on the PBL activity will have the opportunity to complete individual components
while also working as part of a larger team to design a presentation which will be delivered to
several key stakeholders.
For those students interested in recovering standards and/or getting additional help with course
work, be on the lookout for information regarding our extended school program known as A+.
Starting next week our students will have the opportunity to stay after school for additional
supports on Wednesday and Thursday.

and application day lessons.

ACADEMIC INTERVENTIONS
CERT (College Equipped Readiness Tool) testing is in full swing and our students have worked very
hard. They have completed the science test and will finish up English and reading in their English
classes on Friday. The window for MATH will begin on Monday and will extend through Friday,
October 21. Take some time to talk with your student about this.
GREAT NEWS! A+, our after school intervention program, will begin on Wednesday, October 19
with JCPS bus transportation. For the 2016-2017 school year, we will hold after school
interventions on BOTH Wednesday AND Thursday afternoons. Be sure to have conversations with
your child about scheduling times to stay after school with their teachers to recover academic
standards.
