There are many exciting changes happening at Kenauk Nature right now, including some new
chalets, a renovated dam and fish hatchery, the creation of the Kenauk Institute and research
projects as well as many other updates.
Kenauk Nature was purchased late in 2013 by the Nature Conservancy of Canada and a group
of 4 partners. All partners are committed to conserving this unique property for generations to
come. They hope you enjoy some of the exciting new projects that have been completed and
continue to celebrate Kenauk Nature the way they do.

This spacious one bedroom chalet makes for a romantic
getaway in rustic elegance. The newly built cabin
overlooks Mills Lake, a prime rainbow trout lake.
Timber framed and open concept, this retreat offers an
open loft with a king size bed, a warm fireplace, stove,
propane lights, furnace, and hot shower. A solar system
powers the cabin and a well provides clean potable
water. Large windows frame pristine views of the lake
and Baldy Mountain. Open year round this chalet is the
ultimate couples retreat.
Tricorne Chalet
Perfect for a couple, this classic 1930s log cabin
hideaway overlooks a beautiful and small quiet
lake. Located 13 km (8 miles) from the entrance
gate, this chalet was recently moved from Taunton
Lake to Tricorne Lake and fully renovated. The
chalet offers one bedroom, a living room with
wood stove, a fully-equipped kitchen, a screened
porch and a spacious open deck area. This
comfortable retreat is a nature lover’s paradise.
Huddled amongst the trees, Tricorne chalet is alive
with wildlife activity.
Weir Project
In 2015 Kenauk Nature partnered
with the Department of Fisheries
and Oceans to convert the Papineau
Lake dam into a weir to improve fish
access and aquatic habitats.
A weir is a low dam structure used
to locally modify the hydraulic
characteristics of rivers.
This weir is now being used to
increase the availability of quality
habitats for fish reproduction,
foraging, and spawning by facilitating
fish passage while still maintaining
water levels. It has improved fish
circulation between the Kinonge
River and Papineau Lake.

Hatchery Renovation
In order to improve the hatcheries environmental standards and meet
new provincial regulations, the fish hatchery was completely renovated
in 2015 and 2016. Fish production will begin this summer! The fish
produced will be used to stock fishing lakes on the property as well
as sell to local markets and restaurants. The hatchery will annually
produce approximately 25 tons of rainbow and speckled trout.
Forestry Update
After 10 years without forestry activity on the
property, operations have resumed at Kenauk. Using
our own private forestry company, Kenauk Canada
ULC, we have ultimate control over harvesting. The
selective harvest of approximately 20,000 m3 of wood
will occur in 2016. A strategic decision was also
made to eliminate some of the Jack Pine plantations
and return them to their natural environment. Our
forestry company has also partnered with researchers
to ensure the sustainability of the forests.
The Kenauk Institute
A permanent research establishment has been created
at Kenauk! Kenauk Nature is proud to partner with
the Kenauk Institute using research and conservation
to ensure Kenauk’s legacy as a pristine wilderness for
centuries to come. This summer expect to see more than
15 new research projects and educational programs at
Kenauk. Everything from McGill students climbing trees
to study insect biodiversity to loon nesting studies on
Papineau Lake. A research village has also been created on
Whitefish Lake.

Food Services
Kenauk Nature is in the preliminary stages of implementing a new
food program for its clients. 2016 will be a trial year. We are currently
working with a catering company called -40 to provide pre-prepared
meals to supplemented regular groceries. Arrangements can be made
in advance to stock your chalets refrigerator with food of your
choosing selected from special menus. As always, each chalets fully
equipped kitchen and barbeque provide all the tools for preparing
delicious meals in your secluded cabin.
Papineau Lake
Kenauk Nature is also continuing its efforts to ensure the conservation of
Papineau Lake. Kenauk is coordinating with the North Lake Fish and Game
Club as well as the Papineau Lake Association to disseminate fish catch forms
to anglers in an effort to track fish populations. Research projects with the
Kenauk Institute will also be focusing on the lakes hydrology, loon populations,
wetlands, and fragile indigenous lake trout. The Papineau Lake Hydrology project
is being accomplished in partnership with UQAM and will last 3 years. It will
include equipping the lake with many types of scientific equipment (i.e. probes,
a weather station, wake barriers); we ask that this equipment is respected and left
untouched. Please contact the Kenauk Institute with questions or if you would
like to participate in sampling and data collection! Note: This year the ice was
completely off Papineau Lake on April 22nd, slightly later than average.
