The Secret Passage
Maya found a secret passage,
Under a big trapdoor.
The door was hard to find.
It was hidden in the floor.
Maya followed many clues,
She wrote them in her book.
She searched and searched for hours,
All she did that day was look.
Maya looked for the trapdoor
Under the bed and the rug.
She thought she'd found the doorknob,
But it was just a great big bug!
Maya was getting angry.
Maya was feeling sad.
Just then Maya found the trapdoor,
And she didn't feel so bad!

44 Homework 5
Maya and Carlos
Dear Parents:
We are having fun as we learn to read and read to
learn. Thank you for your help and encouragement. At school, your children are reading the popular
chapter book “Nate the Great.” Once the Unit 44
Homework is completed, you may wish to take your
child to the library so he or she can check out more
“Nate the Great” books to read with you.
Homework Routine
Please listen to your child read one story, twice in a
row, each day. Remember, a small amount of reading
each day is better than a lot in one day. You may wish
to make your child’s Read Aloud Story a part of your
bedtime routine.
After listening to your child read a story, ask questions
as indicated. Encourage your child to talk with you
about the story and what he or she liked. Have your
child reread the story. Then sign and date the story. Please return this little book to school every day so we
can acknowledge your child’s efforts. When the book is
completed, it will belong to your child.
Sincerely,
Carlos went to the city to visit his
Grandma J. While he was there, he met
another kid detective, Maya. Carlos and
Maya became good friends.

Maya told Carlos about the cases
she had solved. She told him about
the trouble she had finding Mrs. J's lost
pearls. He laughed when she explained
that the pearls were really false teeth.

Maya and Carlos solved a few cases
together during the visit. Soon Carlos
had to go back to the country. Maya and
Carlos agreed to call each other about
cases. They would still be good friends.

Maya and Carlos Meet
One day, Carlos was going to
visit his grandmother in the city. His
grandma's name was Dee Jefferson,
but Carlos called her Grandma J.
Grandma J gave Carlos a great
big hug when he got to her apartment.
She said, "Carlos, I've heard you are a
wonderful detective. There is someone
I want you to meet!" Grandma J took
Carlos down the hall. She began to
knock on a door that said, "Maya the
Magnificent, City Detective."
A girl about Carlos's age opened
the door. She said, "You must be
Carlos! Mrs. J told me you were a
detective, and I said I had to meet you.
It's nice to meet another detective!"
Carlos and Maya shook hands.

The Case of the Missing Pancakes
"Carlos, your pancakes are ready," said
Dad. "Come eat them while they're hot!"
When Carlos got to the kitchen, his
dad had gone to work, and his pancakes
were gone. He looked in the pan, but they
weren't there. He looked under the table,
but they weren't there. He looked in the
sink and in the trash. They weren't there.
Carlos said, "This is a mystery."
Then Carlos looked at his dog, Spot.
Spot was licking his chops. He had
butter on his nose. He had jam on his
paws. "I know what
happened to my
pancakes. I, Carlos
the Curious, have
solved the case.
My dog ate them!"
