2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Slogo Contest (What’s a slogo? A slogan plus a logo in a single image) What is the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial? The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of American women winning suffrage (the right to vote). The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteed women the vote--a specific right equal to that of men--for the first time in American history. The 19th Amendment produced the largest single expansion of voting rights in our nation’s history. The centennial of the 19th Amendment offers an unparalleled opportunity to commemorate this milestone of democracy and to explore its relevance to issues of equal rights today. For more information about the women winning the vote, click here or here. Who is sponsoring the contest? We call ourselves the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative (WVCI). We established this group in 2015 to encourage a nationwide 2020 commemoration by and for all Americans, with national, regional, and local activities large and small, organized and publicized through both traditional and social media by schools and campuses, community organizations, government entities, and other groups. The WVCI is cochaired by representatives of the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum and the League of Women Voters; the history of both institutions began during the campaign to win the vote for women. (For more information, see http://www.sewallbelmont.org/learn/womens-vote-centennial/.) Who may enter the contest? Anyone living in the United States. Individuals or groups (e.g., school classes, Scout troops, co-workers, informal groups of friends) may submit entries in any of the three entry categories, in accordance with the contest rules and procedures below. Why a slogo contest? The winning slogo will promote the centennial of American women winning the vote with an image in which any American woman or girl may see themselves. The image will brand the 2020 Centennial as a nationwide celebration, much as the five rings of the Olympic logo identifies that periodic global event. We want an image that we and many other groups all around the U.S. might use for their own 2020 Centennial commemorations. How will the winning slogo be used? The winning image may be selected from a single slogo entry or created from slogan and logo entries submitted separately. We will use it as a branding image and will also allow groups celebrating the centennial in coordination with WVCI to use it without charge. The 2020 Centennial slogo may be used in various ways, such as on websites, social media platforms, hard copy media like flyers, or promotional items like T-shirts or postcards. Therefore, the image must adapt well to reproduction in electronic and print media, on small and large surfaces, and for use in color or in grayscale. 2 Contest Rules and Procedures The contest opens on March 30, 2016. Submissions will be accepted through 11:59 p.m., July 31, 2016. The winners will be notified and their names publicly announced on Women’s Equality Day, August 26, 2016.
