Для удобства работы все видеоматериалы разбиты по темам: Education, Science, City Cabs, Dead Men’s Stories and Cartoons. Например, видеофильм “Language” можно использовать при прохождении темы “English as a World Language”. Это могут быть доклады в устной или письменной форме, например “What is a Protolanguage?”, “The Language Jesus Christ Spoke”; “Diversity of Languages”, 5 “The Archives of Babel”, дискуссии, дебаты, озвучивание видео эпизодов, комментарий к отдельным эпизодам и т.д. Завершает пособие мультфильм “Bambi”, который очень удачно подходит для аудиторной и, особенно, внеаудиторной работы на 1 курсе при изучении тем: “Meeting People”, “Love and Friendship”, “Wild Life” и т.д. 6 “The film is potentially a more powerful medium of communication than any other that mankind has yet developed. The motion picture from the broad educational point of view is essentially a multiple method of communication. It is especially effective as a technique for telling a story. It presents facts realistically. It dramatizes human relations and events. It arouses emotions. It transmits attitudes. It records and reproduces phenomena for scientific study analysis. It depicts the imaginative. And it can enable one to see the unseen. By means of the sound motion picture, the whole gamut of human experience may be communicated from teacher to learner wherever a learning – teaching situation exists.” From “Film and Education”., N.Y., 1998, p.23 7 LANGUAGE THE ARCHIVES OF BABEL 32 min. Pre – watching Do you know that … Today, English is one of the major languages in the world and it requires an effort of the imagination to realize that this is a relatively recent thing – that in Shakespeare’s time, for example, only a few million people spoke English, and the language was not thought to be very important by the other nations of Europe, and was unknown to the rest of the world. English has become a world language because of its establishment as a mother tongue outside England, in all the continents of the world. This exporting of English began in the 17th century, with the first settlements in North America. Above all, it was the great growth of population in the United States, assisted by massive immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries that has given the English language its present standing in the world. Incredibly enough, 75 % of the world’s mail and 60% of the world’s telephone calls are in English. (extract from “English as a world Language”. Headway Upper-Int. by John & Liz Soars) But what about other languages? Let’s get back to the times of Babel Tower. What was a protolanguage? What is the origin of all other languages? What is a language in general? LANGUAGE IS THE DRESS OF THOUGHT. (Samuel Johnson, British lexicographer and literary critic) 8 Talking points: 1. A study of language can be problematic. Common thoughts are expressed using the myriad of words the world over. But are the words a real problem or is it the way they are put together? 2. What nationality do you prefer your teacher of English to be: a native speaker or Russian? Who can explain grammar rules better? What is more important: to have rich vocabulary or to know grammar rules perfectly well? What are your strategies for learning English? 3. Do you know that there are languages that don’t differentiate between Singular and Plural, don’t have the concept of the Past Tense? Does it mean that people speaking these languages don’t have a conceptual distinction between now and what happened in the past, don’t see the difference between one thing and many things? 4. What is the reason for young people to have their own language called “slang”? 5. In what way can the language divide people? 6. What does, in your opinion, a job of a linguist consist of? Let’s see how your answers correlate with the answers of wellknown linguists: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. There are hundreds of disappearances every year that nobody can explain. The US Government Agencies still don’t recognize officially the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon. He thought they were somewhere near the Florida Keys. But then he turned east and north again in search for land, and so got even further out to the ocean. Besides, one more plane – the Martin Mariner – vanished without any trace. At one moment Taylor turned west to the Florida coast as he thought. At 4p.m Lt. 57 UNDERSTANDING CYBERWORLD 54 min. This video film gives a vision of the year 2020.
