Volunteer Recognition Program
“TAV” – Thank A Volunteer
The Volunteer Services Department, always looking for ways to recognize and promote
volunteering, has plans afoot to furnish Auxilians with recognition of their service worn in
conjunction with each volunteer’s ID Badge. TAV – Thank a Volunteer – is a local adaptation,
designed by the office’s Katie Gorman, which springboards from practices of other volunteer
locales in Ohio and Kentucky. While awards pins are awarded incrementally for hours and
years of service, TAV will state each volunteer’s tenure as a volunteer, from one to 50 years and
up. It consists of a simple card, stating each volunteer’s number of years, and is designed to be
worn under the ID Badge with the number of years in service showing just beneath the badge.
Flip the badge up and there is the Auxiliary logo, also designed by Katie.
TAV will be “rolled out” incrementally during the next month or so.
Ask for your TAV card when you are in the PWMC Volunteer Office next.
“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

About the Flu Shot
Novant Health recently addressed the requirement that all “team members, physicians,
volunteers, contract staff, students and others who work or provide services at a Novant Health
facility” must receive an annual influenza vaccination. Principal among the reasons for the
requirement:
• Flu vaccinations can reduce the risk of contracting the flu by about 60%.
• Flu vaccinations reduce the severity of the flu.
• Flu vaccinations reduce the duration of the flu.
• Flu vaccinations help curtail the spread of the virus.
THE TIME LINE
• Flu vaccine is available at no cost to all volunteers assigned to a Novant Health facility.
• Clinics will be in October; the dates will be announced in September.
• Name badges will be required in order to receive the vaccine.
• Vaccinations must be completed by 2:00 p.m. on October 27, 2016; after that date any
volunteer who has not been vaccinated or provided proof of vaccination elsewhere will
be suspended from all volunteer assignments for the duration of the flu season.
EXEMPTIONS
Volunteers may request medical or religious exemption from the flu vaccine.
• The exemption request period for current volunteers will be until Sept. 15.
• If granted an exemption by the review committee, the exempt volunteer will be
required to mask through the end of the flu season.
• New volunteers or volunteers who have had a change in health status or religious status
may request an exemption during the course of the year.
Current Auxiliary Needs
With summer-only college volunteers returning to school, a number of vacancies may be seen
on service area schedules. Especially shorthanded is Loving Arms and also the new
Clerical/Phone Assistance service for 3rd floor Patient Services is being initiated at Haymarket
Medical Center. Surgical Services, PWMC, is also requesting additional volunteers. The
Aubergine Thrift Shop is always looking for new Team Members, too! If you have a reliable
friend looking for a rewarding time in service to others, or if you would like to add another
service area to your schedule, please call the Volunteer Office to get the ball rolling

Planning Ahead with the Auxiliary’s Fundraising
Committee
The Auxiliary’s Fundraising Committee has additional events in the
planning stages that you may wish to put on your calendars:
1. Community Yard Sale – Saturday, October 1, will see a
repeat of the Community Yard Sale held earlier this year. It
will be held again in the parking lot of Novant Health Prince
William Medical Center and participation details are the
same as with the first event. One space costs vendors
$25.00. Start collecting your items now! Those interested as
well as those having questions should contact committee
member Linda Smith at [email protected]
2. Holiday Bazaar White Elephant Table – Maybe the Community Yard Sale is not “your
bag”, but you do have some items, gently used, that you’d love to surplus. Suggestion:
start collecting them for donation and sale at the Auxiliary’s Holiday Bazaar, November
4 & 5. Donations may be brought to the Volunteer Office at NH PWMC prior to the
event.
The Importance of Posting Hours – Count Them All!
The Auxiliary supports Novant Health UVA Health Systems, PWMC and HAMC and associated
locations, both financially and with volunteer time/labor. Quantifying the volunteer hours
given is a way to demonstrate to the health system the extent of the Auxiliary’s commitment
and assistance. It also is an important way to demonstrate the Auxiliary’s contribution to
outside agencies such as the Virginia Association of Healthcare Auxiliaries and Volunteers or
county and state entities. While financial contributions are direct and obvious, quantifying
volunteer hours may seem less striking. However, when hours are converted to “full time
equivalent employees”, the value of contributing time and effort is more obvious.
Speaking in a very specific way, if a volunteer does not post hours and, in
addition, is not replying to or communicating with the Volunteer Office’s
inquiries, it is likely that resignation is interpreted to be that volunteer’s
desire. Such a departure from service is not positive. Count all your hours!
If you go to a meeting of your service area, count those hours. When you
attend a General Meeting, count those hours! If you work extra time to
train a new volunteer, your time counts then, too.
AND: Remember to count the hours it took you to complete AME this year! Add it to your time
card.
