Date: Series: Title: 04/28/2013 Baggage Claim Prejudice Big Idea: When we claim prejudice, we reject what God calls good/clean. Big Do: Treat everyone the same. This series will help people deal with the baggage that sometimes weights us down. Each week we will talk about a particular burden—how it burdens (affects) us and the damage it can cause. We will present ways people may be freed from the burden of the baggage they carry. This week we will look at PREJUDICE. Each of us harbors ideas about others that are not true but we hold on to them anyway. Just like the Dr. Suess story about Green Eggs and Ham...he didn’t like green eggs and ham because he didn’t like the way they looked. God does not have favorites. Romans 2:11 (CEB) We have a mission here in Kids Rock! …do you remember what it is? It is CHOOSE RIGHT AND REACH OUT! “Choose Right” means we need to think about what God would want us to do when we are faced with a decision and ask Him to help us choose the right path. Reach out means that we are living the way Jesus asked us to, we need to Go out and tell others about Jesus. It is amazing that in the places the people have wells that they are opening schools for kids to learn. The problem is that they don’t have money to buy books for the schools. We decided that we would collect money for books during Easter and for the whole month of April. Last week we collected __22.77___. That is _3__ books! So we have collected enough money for 11 books. Remember, they cost $7.50 each. We will keep track of how many books we can buy for the kids in Africa! Fear Objective: to reinforce previous lessons Last week we continued our series called “Baggage Claim”. Last week we talked about fear. We talked about how fear kept the Isrealites from fighting Goliath. We also talked about David’s trust in God to protect him which allowed him to face and defeat Goliath. No one thought David could beat Goliath but through God, all things are possible. Objective: To show how labels can influence our judgments about people, and to recognize the importance of getting to know people before making judgments about them. Supplies: Volunteers, white board, People tags and gift cards 1. Ask for 4 volunteers and place a “people tag” on each of them using the names and descriptions listed below. Tell students to imagine they are doing holiday shopping for 4 relatives: o Uncle Frederick, a motorcycle rider o Aunt Mina, a librarian o Cousin Wei, a Navy recruit o Great-Aunt Keesha, a senior citizen 2. Show the students the different object cards and ask them who should get what object. Hand the object card to your volunteer. Then, ask students: o How did you decide who would get each gift? o How did labels like "motorcycle rider" and "senior citizen" influence your choices? 3. Now read the fact cards about each relative and let them use this information in making their final gift choices. Discussion After students have finished deciding on gifts, ask the following questions: 1. How did the new information change your gift choices? 2. What happens when we rely too much on labels? 3. If you had to choose a gift for someone you didn't know well, what could you do to make a good choice? 4. If someone new joined our class and we wanted to make that person feel welcome, what could we do? 5. Are there any other times when it would help to learn more about someone before making a judgment? Objective: To provide to increase understanding of The Bible story of Jonah 1
