9. Major Areas of Creative or Research Interest
My research has centered upon three related and integrated themes: 1) basic research in developmental
psychopathology focused on testing contextual, bio-behavioral, and cognitive-developmental models of
emotional disorders, 2) improving the empirical utility of assessment and measurement techniques for
childhood emotional problems, and 3) intervention and prevention of emotional difficulties in youth. The
focus of intervention and prevention is to move the basic science of developmental psychopathology and
measurement theory out of the lab and into real world applications by developing clinical trials and
prevention interventions for youth emotional difficulties. The main thrust in developmental
psychopathology has focused on biological and cognitive-developmental models of internalizing disorders
in youth. The goal of this research is to usefully integrate developmental, cognitive, biological and
behavioral theories in an attempt to understand the etiology and course of internalizing disorders in
childhood and identify developmental trajectories of anxiety expression throughout childhood. In terms of
assessment, a large part of my work has been on the assessment of anxiety and related constructs in
children and adolescents (with some projects crossing the lifespan) as well as the development of statistical
techniques that help to elucidate issues in assessment. Related assessment projects examine differences in
the expression of anxious symptoms across cultures and contexts, the development of culturally valid
forms of assessment, as well as the identification of biological and behavioral markers of emotional
dysregulation. Finally, in terms of interventions, I have been involved in several funded clinical trials and
other direct application projects. These intervention and applied projects attempt to build upon and apply
the knowledge garnered from the basic and assessment research.
