Literacy (Reading)
Learning Target:I can label text features in a nonfiction book. I can explain what is a
title, heading, table of contents, and bold words.
This week we began unpacking our learning targets. What does it mean to label? What is a
nonfiction book? What does text mean? Unpacking our learning targets gives students clear
understanding of what they will be doing and learning.
We read a nonfiction book called “Clean up Litter.” We analyzed this nonfiction text and
used post it notes to label the different parts of the book. The student’s then worked with a
partner and used their own nonfiction book and labeled the various components: Title,
heading, table of contents, and bold words.
We debriefed by sharing our findings and reflecting on our learning targets.
Math
Learning Targets: I can tell time to thirty and o’clock. I can write the time digitally.
The students created a classroom schedule. On a piece of paper they had to stamp a clock
picture for each subject. They then had to write each subject name and show the time by
drawing the time on the stamp clock.
Science
Learning Target: K.SCI.2: Describe what plants and animals need to survive. K.SCI.4:
With Guidance, conduct investigations with peers. K.SCI.5: Gather science
information from investigations and texts. K.SCI.6: Use and share pictures, drawings
and/or models during investigations.
We are now down to one fish in our classroom. We are hoping our last fish last a few more
weeks!
We now have worms!! The children are investigating the movement of worms, measuring
the length of worms, and observing them in their habitat.
Learning Target:I can create a nonfiction book using text features. I can create a
recycling nonfiction book that focuses on: what is recycling, what to recycle, where
to recycle.
Each day, the children work on their recycling nonfiction book. They are looking fantastic.
There is a table of contents, headings, labels, bold words, and pictures.
Case Study
Taking Care of My
World
Learning Targets: I can use recycle items to make something new.
This week in art, the students began making their bugs from recycle egg cartons, paper, and
plastic. Next week, we will begin making our recycle airplanes.
Social Studies
America
Learning Targets:I learned that the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom. I can
explain what freedom is.
This week we focused on the Statue of Liberty. We learned that it was a gift from France to
the United States. It took 12 years to build. We also compared and contrasted how
immigrants came to the United States in 1800 and now in 2016.
