Lesson 10 Essential Question: How do parts of a story work together?
 Students will work on long vowel sounds, short vowel /u/ and final cluster words.
 Students will work on text and graphic features.
 Students will work on the words to know… eat, give, one, put, small, and take.
 Students will work on story structure, synonyms, prepositions and prepositional phrases.
 Students will continue working on their “Very Hungry Caterpillars in New Orleans Books”.
 Students will complete their “Black Cat Writing”.
 Dictation Test on Thursday.
 Spelling Test on Friday. Story test on Friday.
 Students will continue Topic 4—Children will understand how addition facts to 8 relate to
subtraction facts to 8. Students will write related addition and subtraction facts to 12.
 Math Quiz—Adding 1
 Students will complete their insect research.
 Students will watch a video about ants.
 Students will learn about the process to become president and presidential responsibilities.
 Students will complete pumpkin art.
 Students will make butterfly art.
 Students will begin Eric Carle art.
Last Week in Detail
In Literacy, we discussed text and graphic features. Examples of text & graphic features include: the title, the author’s
name, photographs, pictures, captions and labels. We discussed the features and their purpose in the text. We discussed
antonyms and made antonym pairs. We continued work on our Caterpillar book. We began an organizer for our
Halloween writing about a black cat. In math, we learned about making a 10 to add numbers between 12 and 20. We also
practiced adding doubles. We took a doubles fact test on Friday. We reviewed strategies for adding: counting on, doubles
and making a 10. In Science, we learned about the social insect bees. We watched a video on bees, discussed the
different types of bees and decided which kind of bee we would be if we were bees. We also researched an assigned
insect in the library with Ms. Barbier. We researched using books about insects and the encyclopedia. We will continue
our research this week. In social studies, we learned about the founder of Little League, Carl Stotz and his contribution to
children’s baseball.
Report Cards: Report cards went home on Friday, October
28th. Please sign and return the report card envelope. The
report card is yours to keep.
Progress Conferences: Please sign up for a conference on
Tuesday, November 8th. Please arrive 10 minutes before your
conference time. You should have received a link from SignUp.com.
Halloween Day: Please have your child come to school
dressed in their Characters Come Alive costume. The
Halloween festivities will take place from 1:20 to 2:20. If you
are volunteering, please arrive by 12:35pm for setup.
Activity to Do Together:
Play a game of charades with your Words to Know.
No Homework on Halloween!!
Quizlet: Please sign up for Quizlet to help your child study
for their math facts and words to know. A separate email was
sent with log in information.
