Fact Sheet - Appleseed Energy

Introduction
Appleseed Energy is a full service green energy provider for North Eastern Nova
Scotia focusing mostly in Cape Breton Island, Antigonish County and Guysborough
County. We specialize in Solar Energy, Wind Power, and Hybrid solutions for
residential, agriculture, business, municipal and marine. We build, install, and
maintain grid-tie (Net Metering) as well as off-grid (stand-alone) systems.
Using the sun’s natural energy is a clean solution to the earth’s environmental
crisis and it saves you money. Installing
solar panels will provide savings for years
to come, no matter the price of electricity.

Solar Hot Water...uses the sun’s energy to heat water for domestic use in your
home or workplace, or to heat your swimming pool. A solar panel is installed on
your roof or a mounting rack facing south and a line is run from the panel to a hot
water tank. A solution of glycol is heated by the sun
and that heat is transferred to an auxiliary hot water
tank installed next to your existing one. The water
warmed by the sun is transferred from the auxiliary
tank to your hot water tank reducing energy used to
heat the water. A typical solar hot water system can
meet 70% of your domestic hot water needs. There
are federal and provincial incentives to pay a portion
of the cost and you will enjoy 30 years of free hot
water.

Solar Electric (PV or photo voltaic)...takes the sun’s energy and converts it into
electricity for use in your home or business. The panels are modular and can be
customized to your needs. Each panel has an inverter that converts the sun’s
energy into usable energy that is fed directly to your electric panel. With a netmetering agreement from Nova Scotia Power, if you are producing more
electricity than you require, the excess electricity will be fed back into the
electrical grid and NS Power will
give you a credit. If you need more
power than you are producing,
your will pull electricity from the
grid and at the end of the year you
will be paid for any excess power
not used.
This means that you will not lose
any of the energy produced by the
sun. During the summer when the sun is at its most productive, you will be
producing maximum electricity and feeding power back into the grid for credit,
essentially your meter will spin backward. In the winter, you will still be
producing electricity (even on cloudy days) but with the shorter days and the sun
lower in the sky, you will be using power off the grid and using the accumulated
credit. You will be paid for any remaining credit at the end of the year. Solar PV
requires virtually no maintenance and lasts 30+ years.

Solar Hot Air…is a passive solar system. It
uses the sun’s warmth to warm air in an
enclosure and then pushes that warm air into
your home or business using a small electric fan.
This can be adapted to many different sizes to
simply heat your kitchen or for industrial
applications.

Wind…we live in a naturally windy climate and you may
benefit from considering a windmill as an energy alternative.
Wind energy, like solar, can be fed back into the grid using a
Nova Scotia Power net metering agreement and is an
environmentally friendly way to use clean energy.

We are familiar with both on-grid and off-grid solutions…Off-grid electrical
systems provide continuous electrical power to thousands of consumers who live
and work far beyond the reach of power lines. They use highly efficient batteries
to store power to be used when needed. We have installed both large and small
systems as well as a hybrid of both systems so you can have the full benefit of
electricity as well as batteries for back up or emergency use.
