Stuck in the Muck
Sullivan Open House
By Samuel Carlisle
By Claire O’Meara
On April 4, 2013 Sylvie made history. During recces
Sylvie and her friends were out playing in the mud.
Sylvie decided to venture a little farther than the
others. Before she knew it she was stuck in the muck.
The muck was getting deeper every time she moved
luckily it didn’t go over her boots. We were all
laughing up a storm, even Sylvie, with her cute little
smile. We weren’t expecting little Sylvie to get stuck.
Nobody had muck boots on so, Sylvie stuck it out
while Ms. Whippe was getting her boots in the
school.
Just a reminder the Sullivan Open House is next
week. It’s on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013. It starts at
6:00 and it ends around 7:30. The Sullivan Open
House is for all of the Sullivan parents and
families who would like to see our school. Some
parents from Nelson are coming to help give the
tour to the Sullivan parents and families. All the
teachers will be there too.
Some people were trying to pull Sylvie out with sticks
but she was too deep in the muck. Then we see Ms.
Whippie racing out to the muck! The hero was
coming. When she arrived Ms. Whippie went right
into the muck and got Sylvie’s right foot out but, the
left was stuck like gum in hair. Then, finally her foot
popped up out of the hole! Ms. Whippie had done it
and Sylvie was unscathed!
Rock Climbing Next Week
Nelson School Students Ramble on Rocks
By Ali Weis
Next week, on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 the
Nelson School will be traveling to the Wells
Memorial School to use their rock wall. The field trip
was set up by Mr. Durand, our school P.E teacher.
All the students will get a chance to climb the rock
wall at least once. Because we will going there on
Wednesday, our specials day, music and art will be
also held at The Wells Memorial School. This is
hoped to be a fun field trip.
*Coach Durand and Mrs. Whippie Prior will be
belaying students as they climb the rock wall.
Appropriate harnesses will be worn.
Nelson Alumni Talk about
KMS with 6th graders
By Mrs. Whippie Prior
Lockers, gym clothes, and Tech Ed class were
major topics of discussion in the 5/6 room this
week. Two Nelson School Alumni returned to
school with Ms. Livengood, the guidance
counselor at KMS, and Mrs. Frazier, the principal
of KMS. Sarah Cucchi and Samuel Johnson came
back to Nelson School to talk about their
experience with the transition to the middle
school. They brought along their master binders
to show the students what their binder looks like.
Sarah mentioned how she didn’t get lost and only
had to look at her class schedule for the first two
weeks of school before she had it memorized.
The 6th grade students seemed excited about the
classes and clubs being offered by the middle
school but aren’t sure how they feel yet about
shadow day.
KMS Open House for 6th
Grade Families
Next Thursday, April 11th, Keene Middle School
is having an open house for all 6th grade students
from small towns and their families. KMS faculty
will be on hand to answer questions and give
tours starting at 6:00pm. Hopefully our students
and their families can attend.

April Door Decorating
Zebras
By Dakota Walker
By Corinne Hautanen
Every month, Nelson School has an hour to
decorate their classroom door. Door decorating is
when each class takes materials and goes all out
crazy on the door. The first thing each class does is
at snack time the classes figure out a plan for the
door and then students choose the job they want
to do. Then the classes pick a background color
for the door. Now the students pick materials that
they need to use to make whatever plan they
picked.
Gravy zebras have stripes that are close together,
and they have wide ears, and they are bigger than
other zebras. Most zebras are the size of ponies,
but gravy zebras are about the same height as
horses. The zebras look for water far and near,
they can even sniff out water and dig the water out
from under the ground. They can live without
water for up to five days. What do you like about
zebras? I like zebras because they look like horses
and their mane looks like a Mohawk.
For April’s door decorating the K/1/2 class had
on the door was a black bear, and birds, and
rabbits. The 3/4 door has at least 3 bunnies, owls,
and flowers with bees. The 5/6 class put on their
door an aqueduct with people climbing on ropes
up the aqueduct and a little Easter bunny. Nelson
school is lucky and happy to have door decorating
and let’s hope for spring to melt the snow right
away.
D. O. L.
By Molly Gray
In the 5/6 classroom, we do morning work. We
just started to do D.O.L., daily oral language.
D.O.L is when Mrs. Whippie writes sentence with
mechanics problems and we have to fix them with
official proofreading marks. “D.O.L. helps with
students understanding of common mistakes made
in writing and allows students to practice editing
with correct proofreading marks,” says Mrs.
Whippie Prior. An example is: “he gots many
presents for Christmas last year” and this is what it
looks like after. “He got many presents for
Christmas last year.” That is what we do in D.O.L.
So go fix some sentences!
*The other classes in our school also do some
form of D.O.L. too. Ask students in 3/4 what they
do.
Spirit Day: Fake an Injury
By Kevin Ranagan
Did you hear? On Monday everyone broke bones!
Not real bones, of course. Luckily spirit day was
on April 1st, making the perfect joke. There were
some creative designs displayed that day, such as:
crutches, slings, gauze, and air-boots. There were
so many well thought out injuries! I hope we have
another fake-an-injury day this year!
Writer’s Column
This week’s topic: quotations
By Tae’lar Forcier
“O me! What fray was here? Yet tell me not, I
have heard it all” (Romeo and Juliet). That was an
example of quotation, it helps us to know what is
being said and/or so that it’s not considered
plagiarism. In writing pieces it is important to have
quotation marks. One way you use quotation
marks is to quote someone from a book or a
movie, or an interview. Another way you use
quotation marks is if it’s if the character is taking,
for example, “I don’t want to go; I would be
lonely” said Tae’lar about the safari. The character
was talking. Quotes are very important when it
comes to writing pieces, so I hope you use them a
lot. I will review more next week’s issue of NSN.
