(S.O.M.).
First Grade 101 - (Room 3-124) Rowlett Academy First Grade Team:
“What can I do at home to support my child’s learning?” is the most frequently asked question we receive as teachers. Join us as we navigate
through some of our favorite online resources, share reading and writing strategies, and discuss what homework will look like in first grade.
“Math is Fun” – (Room 3-109) Jessica Kriby: Did you ever think math could be fun? Learn about how to make math an every day topic in
your home by discussing fun ways to incorporate it into your child’s life.
Brain Based Research: Maximizing Your Child’s Ability to Learn- (Room 3-101) Dr. Stephen Rushton, USF: Discover what brain based
research in the field of neuroscience tells us about how children learn.
Rowlett Academy Information en Espanol- (Room 3-104) Alfredo Escobar: Esta clase es mayormente para padres de familias que están
empezando por primera vez en Rowlett, aunque cualquiera que guste repasar puntos claves sobre nuestra escuela es bienvenido/a. Algunos de

What’s the Scoop on Middle School?- (Room 3-110) Terry Devine, Assistant Principal MSA: Are you asking yourself these questions……
Where will my child go to middle school? Can I choose the middle school they will attend? When do I choose the school? What does my child
need to have to be ready for middle school? This session will answer these questions and much more. Join Mr. Devine, a real-life Assistant Principal, as he shares the scoop on middle school.
Redirecting Children’s Behavior/Handling Power Struggles – (Room 3-107) Stephanie Hefner, MA, Certified Parent Educator: Many
parents ask themselves the question, “ How can I avoid getting into power struggles with my child?” This session will give you some great tips for
redirecting your child’s behavior.
Sensory Integration and Learning- (Room 3-105) Jodie Folds, OT: What is sensory processing? We will discuss how sensory processing
impacts your child’s social skills, academic performance, and motor development. You will learn activities you can do at home to support their
academic success.
The Role of the Charter School Governing Board –(Room 3-108) Debra Woithe, Rowlett Academy Board Chair. What puts the “Inc.” in
William Monroe Rowlett Academy for Arts and Communication, Inc.? Find out how school oversight will be different for Rowlett as a charter
school. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

Students with learning challenges such as Dyslexia, Auditory Processing, and the Twice Exceptional student benefit from teaching methodologies
that are unique to their specific needs for successful academic outcomes.

Really Knowing and Growing Your Child As A Reader K-5 - (Room 3-111) Sue Kolbe, 2nd Grade Teacher: This is a workshop
that is designed to help you, as parents, really get to know and understand your child as a reader. It will also give you ways that you
can support your child they grow to new levels of reading. It is a fun and exciting process to be a part of!
Odyssey of the Mind- (Room 3-101) Christine Sket, OM Coach: What is OM all about? Odyssey of the Mind is an international
educational program that provided creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team
members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of
literary classics. Come and find out what OM is all about.
Rowlett Parent-to-Parent- (Room 3-104) Jeni Sheid, Rowlett Parent and Volunteer: New to Rowlett? Come to this information session
with your questions and leave with answers! Everything you want to know about being a Rowlett parent!
4th Grade: the home and school connection.- (Room 3-110) Rowlett Academy 4th grade team: Come join the 4th grade team as
we take a look at the essentials for the upcoming year! Some of the topics we will cover include the home to school connection, scheduling our day, additions to our Power Up curriculum, and a Q & A session. Hope to see you there!

include the carious ways children learn and techniques to support their individual learning styles.
Keeping your Kids Happy and Healthy this School Year – (Room 3-105) Diane Nixon, RN, MSN/MBA, School Nurse: Learn
five things that parents can focus on to keep your children healthy, happy, and ready to learn this school year. The five topics covered
will be: rest, nutrition, dental and medical care, exercise/activity, and communication.

Rowlett. Beginning in Kindergarten when students visit the Computer Lab to Fifth grades having laptops, our mission is to provide students with
the technological skills they need to succeed.
Reading Connections- (Room 3-112) D Hiott and Mary Irwin: Reading is thinking! Learn about what reading strategies your child will be
focusing on and how to help him or her to be a successful reader. We will share easy tips on how to support your child’s learning at home.

Arts integration within the Arts- (Room 1-118B) Rowlett Academy Arts Team: Learn how The Arts can integrate within the different Art
mediums as well as common core and in the classroom, through fun activities. Plus, get to know your Arts teachers with a special meet and greet
with the Arts.com team.
Lunch Line 101 - (Room 3-110) Tracey Madden, Cafeteria Manager: This session will explore the options for lunch and what your child
experiences in the lunch line. We will discuss payment options, joining your child for lunch, and any other questions you may have!
