(530) 879-8979 OCT 7-14, 2016 TRIMESTER 1, WEEK 8 We have quite an exciting week ahead of us! Wednesday is our In-Class Speech Meet. See the reverse side of this newsletter for the criteria. All students will present their selection to the class for a Speaking & Listening grade. However, this year there is also the option for the students to say their speech to a panel of outside judges. According to their score, some students will be invited to participate at a finalist level, presenting again on October 20th before a new panel of judges. Those students who receive score of “superior” at the finals will be invited to share their speech before the school at the Speech Meet Showcase Assembly on October 21st. The 3-5th grade teachers are asking that you to discuss this great opportunity with your child and to help them make a decision regarding whether they want to participate in the competitive meet or just to say their speech to their for grade. I will need to know by Monday, October 10th in order to prepare for the judges. Thank you for helping your child do their best on these important speaking skills. Students should have now selected their Christian fiction book for their next book report. This book report focuses on character development and problem vs. solution. Reports were originally due Friday, October 28th but due to printing delays, students may have until Monday, November 1st to be considered “on time.” I still strongly suggest the 10/28 date as it hits before the busy, long weekend. The 2nd Annual Lion Run Jog-a-Thon is this Friday, October 14th in the morning. Please make sure your student comes to school in appropriate running clothes and shoes, with a healthy snack, and water bottle. Thank you for your enthusiasm and support of this event. Progress Reports went home today and have been reported in the same format as the Report Card that you will receive before Parent-Teacher Conferences. Progress Reports are to update you about your child’s progress in life skills and in the major academic areas. Report Cards will have a more complete recording of grades at the end of the trimester in the other content areas. This year our CCS fourth and fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in The Agribee, which is a spelling and vocabulary bee that uses agricultural words. The top two finalists will be sent on to represent our school alongside other students from Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba counties at the Agribee Finals on November 18th at the Patrick Ranch Museum. Participation is optional and students who would like to take part should begins studying the word list to prepare for the CCS bee on Oct. 28th.
