MODIFICATION TO AMS4A046 PANEL
Modification adds the following three features:
1.
CCL Detector and depth display
The panel will now detect and display the depth where a collar was detected. The
CCL signal is provided from the CHIP panel output.
2.
REEL SAFE connector
This connector has been added along with the signals needed by the
REEL SAFE system
3.
INCIRCUIT PROGRAMMING
The software in the panel can now be updated electronically for a PC using a serial
port. This allows software to be updated without the distribution of an eprom.

Installation instructions for the new CCL/FUSE board in the 46 panel.
1.
Remove rear connector panel.
2.
Do continuity check between J4 Pin G (MMD) connector on back panel and R39
on 40 board (goes through connector P11 pin 12), J4 Pin H (MMD) connector on
back panel and R38 on 40 board (goes through P11 pin 11) and J4 Pin F and
TP1 on the 40 board (goes through P11 pin 1). All should be approximately 0
ohms. Refer to figures 1 and 2.
3.
Remove connector P1 from fuse board, noting orientation of wires in plug in
relationship to the large fuse (F5). Refer to figure 3.
4.
Remove fuse board.
5.
Install new fuse board, ensuring orientation of wires in P1 are the same
orientation to large fuse (F5) as original installation.
6.
Ensure heat shrink is on all wires before soldering.
7.
Extract GRAY wire J4 Pin G and cut at a convenient distance, splice GRAY wire
from Fuse Board P2 Pin 1 to the extracted side of cut wire and insert into J4 Pin
B. Splice GREEN wire from Fuse Board P2 pin 4 to GRAY wire from P11 pin 12
of the 40 board.
8.
Extract BLUE wire J4 Pin H and cut at a convenient distance, splice BLUE wire
from Fuse Board P2 Pin 2 to the extracted side of cut wire and insert into J4 Pin
G. Splice BROWN wire from Fuse Board P2 pin 5 to BLUE wire from P11 pin 11
of the 40 board.
9.
Cut BLACK wire P11 pin 1 of the 40 board at a convenient distance, splice
BLACK wire from Fuse Board P2 Pin 3 to the cut wire.
10.
Heat shrink all exposed solder connections.
11.
Test operate the panel, adjusting R3 on the CCL/Fuse board to receive
satisfactory collars if needed. Boards are currently set to a threshold value of
approximately +1.5V input to the panel. CCW adjustments of R3 will raise the
threshold voltage required to acquire a CCL mark (less sensitive). Example: If
CCL marks are constant as the tools go down hole, adjust R3 CCW until CCL
marks are on depth. Example #2: If no CCL marks are found, turn R3 clockwise.
An O’scope across CCL/Fuse board P2 pin 2 (signal) and 40 board TP1 (ground)
will allow you to see the input signal as you make your adjustments. Refer to
Figures 2 and 4.

Modification to J9 (REEL SAFE connector)
1. Remove the Green (contact closure n.o.) and Brown (contact closure com) wires
from the old J9 connector.
2. Ensure heat shrink is on all wires before soldering. Measure and cut to size all
supplied wires.
3. After installation of the new J9 connector, solder new large pins to Green contact
closure wire and push into J9 pin J, repeat for Brown contact closure, push into J9
pin L.
4. Remove the Gray wire from the center conductor of BNC J21, install heat shrink and
splice to supplied Gray wire. Reattach to J21 and push new Gray wire pin into J9
pin A.
5. Remove the Black wire from the ground lug of BNC connector J21,install heat shrink
and splice to one of the supplied Black wires. Reattach to J21 and push new Black
wire pin into J9 pin B.
6. Solder the remaining new Black wire to bus bar and push pin into J9 pin E.
7. Remove the Yellow wire from J20 pin D, install heat shrink and splice to supplied
Yellow wire. Reattach to J20 pin D and push new Yellow wire pin into J9 pin F.
8. Remove the Blue wire from J20 pin G, install heat shrink and splice to supplied
Blue wire. Reattach to J20 pin G and push new Blue wire pin into J9 pin G.
9. Remove the Red wire from J20 pin C, install heat shrink and splice to supplied
Red wire. Reattach to J20 pin C and push new Red wire pin into J9 pin H.
10. Remove the Orange wire from J20 pin E, install heat shrink and splice to supplied
Orange wire. Reattach to J20 pin E and push new Orange wire pin into J9 pin K.
Ensure all connections are correct by doing a continuity check using the following
wiring chart:

IN CIRCUIT FLASH PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
INSTALLING NEW SOFTWARE USING THE SERIAL PORT
Instructions for programming the DS89C450 MicroController's
internal Flash memory with the real-time data acquistion program.
PREREQUISITES:
1. The real-time data acquisition board must have a socket for the
MicroController and a CPU piggy-back PCB installed in that socket
with a DS98C450 MicroController installed.
2. A computer with a serial port, and installed Hyperterminal
program.
3. The new revision real-time data acquisition HEX file program.
PROCEDURE:
1. Transfer the new revision HEX file to the computers (C:\) root
directory.
2. Turn power on to the Hoistman’s panel.
3. Connect your PC to the serial port at the rear of the panel.
Note: If the PC does not have a serial port, use a USB to Serial convertor. The Serial Port will then
need to be changed to the port that the USB convertor is assigned by Windows (typically com3,
com4, com5, or com6).
4. Open a Hyperterminal session.
Use the following settings:
Serial Port: COM1
Baud Rate: 57600
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: None
5. Set the switches on the CPU PCB to PROGRAM mode as follows:
1 - AWAY FROM CPU
2 – AWAY FROM CPU
3 - TOWARD CPU

6. Open the Hyperterminal connection and then press the keyboard
ENTER key. The MicroController ROM Loader will respond with a
banner and then a '>' prompt.
7. Type an uppercase 'K' and the ROM Loader will Klean-erase the
Flash.
8. Type an uppercase 'L' and the ROM Loader will wait to Load a HEX
file.
9. Pull down the Hyperterminal TRANSFER menu and choose: Send Text
File. The file browser will open, so ensure that the file filter is
set to:
Files of type - All files (*.*) and then go to the C:\ root
directory and choose the new revision HEX file to transfer.
10. The ROM Loader will begin programming the Flash and will report
a GOOD status for the duration of the programming procedure as
follows:

- TOWARD CPU
- TOWARD CPU
- AWAY FROM CPU
12. To operate from an EPROM instead of the Micro-Controllers
internal memory, set the switches on the CPU piggy-back PCB as
follows:
