While doing this research, I concentrated on my direct ancestors, but I have included any side-line facts I came across. My direct line ancestors are listed on "Family Group Sheets", any side-line family group will be in the form of an "Outline Descendant Report Sheet". Following each of these sheets are the details that I found. On occasion there may be details that are given about an individual, that do not have a outline, due to the fact that I could not find enough data to warrant an outline on that individual. I have used "Author's note" to record data that may be relevant but I do not have supporting data, highlight discrepancies in researched facts, and my thoughts, conclusions and hypothesis. This work is by no means finished. There is always more to do. At this point, I would like to address the spelling of the "Surname". The Scottish and English spelling of the name is a variation of the name "Burnhouse". "Burn" meaning stream and "House" meaning house. Due to the practice of spelling according to sound, before dictionaries, the name has appeared as Burns, Burne, Burnes, Burness and others. Later due to the pronunciation of the "Gaelic Tongue" the name was also spelled Bourne, Burn and Bernes. The Irish spelling was Byrne and variations off of that. Now we bring in the scribers and transcribers. The ethnocentricity and education level of the scriber and/or transcriber influenced the spelling. I bring this to your attention only because you will find in my documentation several different spellings of a given family, especially the earlier records. The name is sometimes spelled differently in the same document. Due to these facts, it is important to rely on the entire document and its content and no t only rely on the spelling of a name. I would like to thank Ellie McGrory for her assistance on the Burns Family. 1 2 Details of the Burns Family The Burns name changes in spelling many times during the research. I will use the spelling most often used by the family themselves. I will begin the details of the Burns family with the oldest known individual. John Burne is the father of Gerald Burns. He was born in Ireland. Infomation other than his name has not surfaced up to date, but he is recorded as Gerald Burne father on Gerald's marriage registery. Possible Family Links Thomas Burns Author's note: In doing research on the Burns family , I came across a Thomas Burns in the same area of Chester County, Pennsylvania as Gerald. It appears that he may be a brother. Thomas is a family name and he was born in Ireland. There is about 5 years difference in age. One of the things that call my attention to Thomas was that his first born female child was named Mary Ella as was the first female child of Gerald. All the following are details of that family in the hope that they may tie in sometime in the future. Provided by Newspaper Clipping from the Ledger 15 March 1910 Mrs. Margaret Burns, widow of Thomas Burns, died yesterday at the rectory of St. Cecilia's Church, after an illness of some time. Mrs. Burns was taken ill at her home on Chestnut Street and had been removed to the rectory, where she expired. Mrs. Burns was formerly housekeeper at the rectory. Author's note: In the records of St. Cecilia's Cemetery there is a record of a James Burns from Parkesburg, Pa. He is age 56 and buried on 6 December 1935. 3 Family Group Sheet for Gerald Burns and Mary Campbell Husband: Gerald Burns b: d: m: Father: Mother: Other Spouses: Wife: 1821 in Ireland Pennsylvania 1852 in Sunderland, England John Burne Mary (Ireland) Mary Campbell b: d: Father: Mother: Other Spouses: 1833 in Ireland Pennsylvania Philip Campbell Children: 1 F Name: b: Mary Ella Burns 1853 in England Other Spouses: 2 M Name: b: d: Burial: m: Spouse: Other Spouses: Philip J. Gerald is 30 years old and working in a ship-yard. Mary is also 30. They have two children, John 3 and Bridget 2. Author's note: This Mary is not Mary Campbell, but Geralds first wife. There is a death recorded for a Mary Burns in Sunderland dated Sep 1851. Provided by the Marriage Record Gerald Burne (30) son of John Burne, married Mary Campbell (20) daughter of Philip Campbell on 1 February 1852 at St Mary's Chapel, in the District of Sunderland, in the County of Durham. Gerald is a widower living in High Southwick and and Mary is a spinster living in Sunderland. St Mary's is a Catholic Chapel on Bridge Street. Gerald is employed as a sawyer. John Burne is employed as a weaver. Philip Campbell is employed as a laborer. Provided by the 1860 Census of Pennsylvania Gerald is listed as Jearet Burns on this census. He and Mary are living in Coatsville,West Brandywine township, Chester, Pennsylvania. Jearet and Mary were born in Ireland . Living with them are the following children: Mary E (7), Phillip (6), and Margaret A ( 8/12). His occupation is mason. Author's note: The spelling of his name is Jearet Burns, but this was the only time I found it that way. The children being born in Pennsylvania is also a mistake, but the names and ages are right and the location is the same as Gerald Burns on the 1870 census. On the 1930 Census of Andrew his son, it appears that Gerald and Mary both came from Nothern Ireland. 6 Provided from Land Records from the Chester County Archeives in Pennsylvania According to the records Gerald bought several pieces of property on 24 March 1866. It may have been one big piece, but he sold at least three parcels over the years. One lot was sold 13 January 1868 to Israel Windle, another was sold 6 April 1871 to Edward Kelley. There was a third plot sold on 28 February 1883. These records were all signed in his own hand, but Mary used her mark. Provided by the 1870 Census Gerald and Mary Burne are living in the 168th District of West Brandywine Township, Chester, Pennsylvania. The post office area is Rockville. Gerald is a farmer with a real estate value of $2500 and $300 personal property. There are six children: Mary Ella (17), Philip (15), Maggie A (11), Lewis (6), Gerald (4), and Thomas (1). Mary Ella and Phillip were both born in England. The remaining children were born in Pennsylvania. Provided by the 1880 Census Gerald and Mary Burns are still located in West Brandywine, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Mary Ella is no longer at home nor is Philip. Maggie is now listed as Margaret Ann (20), Lewis P (19), Andrew E (17), Gerald (15), Thomas (10), Cecilia (8), and James (6). Provided by the Chester City Directory of 1889-90and 1890-1891 Burns, Mary, widow of Gerald, 216 Hayes St. Burns, Mary, widow, 216 Hayes St Author' note: It appears Mary moved to Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania some time after 1880 and 1889. She probably died in Chester and Gerald might also have died there. I have found no record of them being buried in St Cecilia's in Coatesville and feel they may be buried in either St Michael's or Immaculate Heart in Chester. Descendants of Gerald Burns Author's note: On the 1851 English Census, Gerald is reported to have had 2 children, John and Bridget. On the 1860 Census there is a John Burns age 12 on the same page as Gerald. I believe this is too much of a coincidence. Until proven otherwise I am treating this John as the child of Gerald. John Burns Provided by the 1860 Census of Pennsylvania John is living in Coatsville,West Brandywine township, Chester, Pennsylvania. He is 12 years old and living with the Thompson family. Mr Thompson is a doctor. Author's note: There are a number of John Burns in the area and so I have made no futher conclusions. 7 Bridget Burns Author's note: I found no death records in England for Bridget and no conclusive records in America. Mary Ella Burns Author's note: Other than the 1860 and 1870 Census, when she is with her parents,I have not been able to find any records. One place to look might be the records of St. Cecilia's Church in Coatsville. Margaret Ann Burns Provided by the Records of St Joseph Church in Downingtown, Chester, Pennsylvania Margaret Burns was born 28 August 1859 and Baptized 9 October 1859 in St Joseph Church. Her parents were Gerald and Mary Burns. Her sponsors were Patrick and Ann Casey. The Baptism was done by the Rev J F Prendergast. Provided by the 1900 Census of Pennsylvania Margaret Burns (May 1861) is living at 2824 West Second Street in Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania. She is living with her sister Cecilia Burns. Margaret is 39 years of age and single. No occupation is listed. Provided by Oral Family History Married to a man whose last name was Hunter. For some reason she was called "Methodist Annie". There were two children from this marriage, Mary and Winfield. As yet the family remains a mystery. Author's note: I have not been able to locate this family anywhere. I have found a Winfield Hunter in Philadelphia who has a sister Mary. His father is John., Margaret was single in 1900 and also 39 years of age, which is a little old to be starting a family. My thought is that maybe Winfield and Mary were step-children. The John Hunter I found lost his wife in 1902. Either way Margaret is not easily found on the 1910 Census. Andrew Edward Burns Provided by the Records of Our Lady of Consolation Church, Parkesburg, Chester, Pennsylvania Edward had no birth date listed. He was baptized 24 May 1863 at Our Lady of Consolation Church in Parkesburg. His parents were Gerrald Byrne and Mary Campbell. The Sponsors were Thomas Farrell and Margaret Reardon. He is the proprietor of a restaurant. This census also states that his parents came from Northern Ireland. Provided by the Chester Times - 2 July 1935 Andrew Burns, the proprietor of the restaurant at 2505 West Third Street, was at his place the other morning when he heard an unearthly noise in his cellar, and running down, was surprised to see the white shell of a clam scudding across the floor. He made a closer inspection and was still more surprised to find that one of the clams scudding across the floor, had the leg of a rat in its shell, and by that means was using the rat as a motive power and was getting a free ride around the place. The rat would stop occasionally, and between squeals, gnaw for a moment at the shell and then start off again. Provided by the Chester Times - 14 May 1945 Andrew Burns, a resident of the West End for 60 years, died on Saturday at the home of his sister-in-law, Mre Annie Burns. Provided by the Chester Times - 5 January 1912 TROUBLES OF THE DOYLE FAMILY - Husband Gives His Explanation of the Domestic Difficulty. - HE WAS LOCKED OUT - Alleges That Wife Sent Children to His Brother's House and Deserted Infant Child Referring to an artucke un the Times of Wednesday, in which it was stated the Mrs Patrick F Doyle of 532 Potter Street had forsaken her one year old child after a disagreement with her husband, the following communication signed by Patrick F Doyle has been received. "I wish to correct the statement publlished that I am selling our to go West, or that I made a remark to my that I had a home with my brother John. My domestic life has not been the happiest for sometime past. I worked for my brother John who conducts a lunch room at the corner of Seventh and Potter Streets on December 19th and on my arrival home that night was locked out. The next morning my five small children the oldest of them only nine years of age, were sent over to my brother's house. It was a younger child that told the story about our selling out to go West, and that they were to go to their uncle John's where their father was staying." Stopped the Sale - " Mrs Doyle took care of them the best that she could that day and night. The next morning before five o'clock their heartless mother was sending all of their clothes over when Mrs John Doyle remonstrated with her on the contention that she had enough children of her own. Mrs Maggie Doyle cursed her. I then and there stepped in and stopped her from selling out and I told her that if she wanted to go away and would leave me the home that I could take care of the children. I then took the children home and got my niece to come and take care of them. She left on Friday afternoon December 22d taking with her the infant and a little girl of six who had been staying with an aunt on Twenty-second Street for a week, leaving four boys aged nine, seven, four, and two years of age. The following Sunday, I was taken sick and was in a dangerous condition, my brother being the only one to take care of me. I am sick to-day and have been under the care of Dr F H Hamilton ever since." 24 "Again my sister-in-law, Mrs John Doyle, took charge of the three children and the two year old boy being sent to his aunt on Twenty-second street. On Friday December 286h their mother returned and tore up all of the carpets, selling as much of the furniture as she could. Saturday morning, what she had left of the furniture she sent to a storage warehouse. She was making her stopping place at the home of Mrs Barney Friel at 917 Morton Avenue. On Tuesday evening she sent the infant with the little girl to see me and bid me good-bye before to Irwin Pa. I took the child kissed it and was handing it to my little girl again when she made the remark that the baby was to stay there until the mother was ready to go, when Mrs John Doyle said "No, take the baby away now and let Mrs Friel take care of it until she is ready to go." Ten minutes later, the oldest boy, nine years of age, came back with the infant in his arms. My sister-in-law made him take it away again. In two hours, he returned a second time with the baby stating that his mother was nowhere to be found, that Mrs Field told him that his mother had gone to the opera. It was then that Mrs John Doyle went ti the home of Mr and Mrs Friel and asked them to take the child until the mother returned to answer the charge of desertion. Mrs Friel refused, so Mrs John Doyle took the child home again and will care for it until something can be done for it. An Arrest Expected - A warrant is out now for the arrest of Mrs Doyle on the charge of deserting an infant and while it is not known definitely where she is hiding,it is suspected that she is staying with relatives ot friends in Pittsburg and an arrest is expected soon. Provided by Cemetery Records from St. Cecelia's Church in Coatsville, Pa. Phillip G. and Anna R. are lot holders of Section 4 Range 5 Lot 4 Grave #2 and 3. Provided by Family Philip G Burns was a man who loved family and people. In his younger days, he loved to hunt and fish. For many years, he had hunting dogs in his yard in the city. He tried his hand at many trades. He was an electrician at the steel mills, a store owner, a farmer, and a tavern owner. These jobs took him from Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Delaware County Pennsylvania, and back to Chester County. He also lived in Cape May County, New Jersey for a time, and lastly lived in New Castle County, Delaware. Philip was always in a starched white shirt and most often wing tipped shoes. If going out, he was always dressed in a suit and hat. He preferred a straight razor for shaving, using a shaving mug for lather and a strap to sharpen the blade. Toward the end of his life, his granddaughter’s husband Don would assist him with this task. Philip’s car of choice was a Buick. In the 1940’s, he and his wife Anna took a cross country tour in his automobile. On their return, just a few blocks from home, they had an accident which totaled the car. He developed cataracts is both eyes. When he had the surgery, much different in those days, he had to lie for 2 weeks, flat on his back with his head between pillows. Complications developed and he had to have his eye removed wearing a glass eye from then on. The operation on the other eye was not much better. The only vision he had was seeing shadows and contrast areas. This did not stop Philip from pursuing things he loved. He spent every summer in Wildwood, New Jersey. He loved to fish off the 22nd Street Pier. This pier extended out into the ocean.( Storms later shortened the distance greatly.) 62 During his later years he lived in Coatesville on Chestnut Street. He loved to sit on the porch and talk to the people who walked by. Even though nearly blind, he could identify most from their voice and shadowy images. When family got together, cards were always involved. They would play pinochle for hours at a quarter a game. Using jumbo faced cards and with lighting positioned to give contrast to the cards, Philip was a force to be reckoned with. One of his hobbies was to make doll furniture. He had material in his basement where he loving put together chairs, beds, and benches that were enjoyed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1967, he and his wife Anna moved to Delaware to live with his daughter Sylvia. Things that bring Philip G Burns to mind: a three minuet egg in a cup with torn up toast, tri-striped coconut candy, powered sugar jelly candy (in fact, any type of jellied candy), cracked walnuts, open toed shoes, El Producto Bouquet Cigars, and fishing poles. Some time in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s, the Reynolds family moved into a home on Chichester Avenue in Linwood, Delaware, Pennsylvania. The house had been built by Verna’s parents. Verna and Walt loved new cars and usually bought one every two years. They were a social couple enjoying many events with family, friends, and fellow employees of Walts. During the summer, they would often take their nieces and nephews to various beach like area’s. Verna was a great one for being in the water and often “Ducked” an unsuspecting child. Another fond memory of the children were visits to Horne and Hardart. In the early 1970’s the couple moved to Orlando, Florida, for a short time. Verna, missed the family and friends in the north. They stayed temporarily with Verna’s sister Sylvia, until they bought a mobile home in the Dover, Delaware area. At this time the family lived at the corner of Coates and 6th Street, Coatesville, Pa. This was the location of a store that Anna had inherited from her father William McCann. Sylvia was baptized at St Cecilia's Church in Coatesville at about 6 months of age. There was a disagreement in the family. Anna who was not Catholic at this time refused to let the child be baptized. When Philip went to confession for his Easter Duty, he was told he would be forbidden to receive the sacraments until the baby was christened. Anna acquiesced and Sylvia was baptized shortly thereafter. The family moved to Parkesburg to open a restaurant sometime between 1910 and 1917. This did not work out and they moved back to Coatesville. In 1918 the family lived on Main St in Coatesville. Sylvia did not like living here. By 1920 they lived on Railroad Street in Coatesville. They had a big bulldog that would watch over them as they played. At about 14, Sylvia went to work in a laundry. She was so excited to get her first pay check,, that she ran home to give it to her mother. The entire family put their earnings together for the support of the family, and Sylvia was proud to be able to contribute .In the 1920's, Philip was transferred to the Worth Steel Plant on Naamans Road. The family had housing in housing built by the mill called Worthland. At about the age of 16, Sylvia took the train to Philadelphia, on a regular bases, to study hairdressing. At the same time, she and her sister Agnes were working at the silk mill. The family moved to Delaware County off 9th Street in Chester, eventually buying a house on Laughead Avenue in Linwood, Pennsylvania. Sylvia and her sister Agnes were the major contributors to the mortgage, so Anna and Philip decided to put the house in their names, so that if something happened to Philip they would not have to share with the 2 younger children being they were so young and had made no contribution to the payment of the house. In 1930, Agnes was to marry Jesse Price. Sylvia needed to release her from the house. Agnes signed over her interest in the house and Sylvia purchased for Agnes a maple dining room set, dishes, a lamp and other various articles. Sometime in the mid 1930, William and Verna (her siblings) were living with her while her parents had moved back to Chester County, Pennsylvania. 73 She was living in Linwood when she met her husband, Fred F Jones, at a dance. The story goes that she was dancing with a young man who was not a very accomplished dancer. Fred, being a very accomplished dancer was all around the floor, and deliberately bumping into the couple. Sylvia finally ask him if he wanted the entire floor and his answer was "no, just a dance with you". As the courtship progressed if came close to Christmas. Sylvia, not wanting to spend money on a gift, wouldn't give Fred a date for Christmas. Fred showed up anyhow, with a box of candy with the center piece of candy removed and a five dollar gold piece in it's place. Sylvia consented to go out and on her return, found that her father, who was a great fan of chocolate have made a large dent in the candy. Fred was a major contributor to his family with his father deceased. His mother was very sure that Fred would not marry until after she had died. He was at this time already in his 30's. She made mention of this fact at a church gathering. Sylvia did the hair of a woman who was at the gathering and was told of the statement. She confronted Fred and told him she was not about to wait for his mothers death to get married. They didn't and were married at Immaculate Heart Church in Linwood. Sylvia was very emotional before the ceremony, and arrived at the altar in tears. Fred said "Chin up kid" and her last words to him as a single person were "Oh shut your mouth". They moved into the house on Laughead Avenue. There was born Fred and twins Philip and Phyllis. Philip, dying of pneumonia, at about 7 months of age. Philip G Burns opened a taproom in Coatesville. Sylvia convinced Fred to quit the job he loved at the paper and move to Coatesville to help out. They rented a house on Chestnut Street between her parents house and the taproom. It was not a very good choice for them. In 1946, they bought an apartment house in Wildwood, New Jersey for $14,000. The house was located at 24th street and included a 3rd floor apartment, 2 apartments on the 2nd floor, later converted to 3, the family residence on the first floor with a small apartment in back which had access through the house. There was a large garage and an apartment over it. Fred worked for the Wildwood paper. In 1946 they had a daughter Sylvia (Boots). Around 1950, Fred, with the help of George Clifton, got his job back with the Wilmington paper. The family moved back to Wilmington and lived in an apartment in Kynlynn while their house was being built at 707 Seville Avenue near Belfont. Fred and Sylvia purchased the land to build the house 2 February of 1951, adding a not sold to them by a neighbor 29 May 1953. They soon sold the house in Wildwood. Around 1954, Fred had a stroke and after that many small ones, which disabled him from work of any kind. Sylvia went to work in hairdressing, but is was only a short time before she could not work outside of the home. She then started to work in her basement and was able to keep the family very comfortably with a very little help from Social Security. Fred died in 1966. After his death, her parents gave up their residence in Coatesville and came to live with her. Her father died in 1968. Her mother stayed with her until her death in 1977. On 26 May 1977, Sylvia sold her home for $39,000 and moved to Dover. First, she lived in a trailer park near her sister Verna, and then moved to the Luther Tower’s (a retirement apartment) where she was extremely happy. When Verna's husband developed Alzheimer’s, they all moved in together in an apartment in Claymont. After Walt's death, Sylvia and Verna moved into a smaller apartment. In the late 1990's, Sylvia had a stroke. She remained living with her sister Verna. They lastly moved into Bnai Brith in Claymont, Delaware. If it had not been for the loving care of her daughter Phyllis and grandchildren, she would not have been able to stay with her sister for as long as she did. When it was apparent that it was more detrimental to keep her at home , her daughter Phyllis, found a wonderful nursing home, where Sylvia was visited by family on a daily bases. Upon her death, she was buried in Immaculate Heart Cemetery with her husband and son. 74
