Introduction
The material within this portfolio relates to:
Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249)
This portfolio is designed to demonstrate the types of evidence that could
be produced for Unit 01 of the NCFE Level 2 Certificate Health and Fitness.
It’s designed to provide guidance on how a portfolio could look, rather than
being prescriptive.
Evidence may be submitted in a variety of forms. In this example there are
written accounts and visual evidence. Where the learner has provided
visual evidence (for example screen grabs, copies of research), this has
been clearly annotated to give context as to why it has been included. Each
piece of evidence has been presented with the assessment number shown
at the top of the page.
This portfolio contains both actual evidence from a learner and also
manufactured evidence produced by NCFE. External Moderator guidance
has been provided for each piece of evidence relating to an assessment
criterion. The guidance comments on how the evidence meets the
assessment criteria and what could be improved to obtain a higher grade.
The suggestions and assessment methods are not exhaustive and
Teachers are encouraged to explore other methods which will support the
learner to produce the best evidence that they’re capable of for the unit. For
further advice on the suitability of a particular assessment method, you can
refer to the relevant qualification specification or contact your NCFE
External Moderator.
It’s strongly recommended that each unit is presented and assessed
individually to allow accurate judgements about the learner’s competence.
This will also make it easier to award a grade for the unit. The work must
then be internally moderated and made available for the External
Moderator. It’s accepted that a piece of evidence may be presented for
more than one unit. Where this is the case, the evidence must be clearly
mapped to all units and assessment criteria it applies to when presented to
the External Moderator. This will enable them to make an accurate
judgement about the learner’s competence and overall unit grade. We
would encourage the use of our Evidence and Grading Tracker document
which is available on our website www.ncfe.org.uk, however any method
which clearly records the evidence against the assesment criteria can be
used.

Assessment criterion:
1.1
Explain the terms ‘health’ and ‘fitness’
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has explained the term health using the correct definition and
has achieved a Pass.
To achieve a Merit learners would need to provide examples of physical,
social and psychological health to support their explanation.
For a Distinction learners would need to explain how the physical, social
and psychological aspects link together and how health and fitness link
together.

Description
Cardio-Vascular Endurance
It is how long we can exercise the whole body
for long periods of time and is sometimes called
stamina. For example, we need stamina for long
distance events such as distance running,
cycling and swimming.
It is the amount of force a muscle can use
against a resistance. For example, it helps
sportspeople to hit a tennis ball and tackle in
rugby.
It is the range of movement at a joint. It helps
performers to stretch and reach further. For
example, stretching to reach a badminton
shuttlecock, or tackle in football. It is also
important for gymnastic events and dance.
It is the percentage of body weight which is fat,
muscle or bone. It helps sportspeople
depending on the type of sport they play. For
example, heavy rugby players are more
effective in the scrum and lightweight players
are better on the wing. But light long distance
runners will always beat heavyweights.
It is the ability to use your muscles repeatedly
without becoming tired. It helps sportspeople
to sprint or repeat quick actions for longer. For
example, a boxer would need this for long
boxing matches as well as badminton and
squash players.

Description
Speed
It is how quickly someone is able to perform a
movement or cover a distance. This helps all
games players to move into position or get
away from opponents quickly. For example,
making fast breaks in Basketball or running as
fast you can in sprint race.
It is the ability to change the position of the
body quickly and in control. This helps team
players dodge their opponents. For example, a
rugby player avoiding tackles.
It is the how quickly you can respond to a noise,
something you see or feel. For example, this
helps swimmers to make a fast start, when they
hear the starting gun / beep.
It is the ability to use two or more body parts
together. This helps all athletes to move
smoothly and quickly especially when also
having to control a ball. For example, hitting a
tennis ball.
It is the ability to keep in the correct position
when stationary (static balance) or moving
(dynamic balance). For example, this helps
gymnasts maintain their position and prevents
games players from falling over when playing
at speed.
It is the ability to use strength at speed. For
example, this helps athletes in high jump, throw
far in shotput or sprinting quickly. Power =
Strength x Speed.

Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249) (cont’d)
Assessment criterion:
1.2
Describe the benefits of exercise
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Pass grade by demonstrating an understanding
of many benefits of exercise (physical, mental, social).
To achieve a Merit the learner would need to describe in detail the benefits
of physical, mental and social exercise eg providing examples using a
certain sport, how it decreases the risk of diseases such as heart disease.
To achieve a Distinction the learner would need to include longer term
benefits eg reducing the effects of chronic conditions such as rheumatoid
arthritis, depression etc.
Grade awarded for this assessment criterion - Pass
Assessment criterion:
1.3
Describe the health-related components of fitness
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Merit grade by correctly describing the health
related components of fitness and providing detail through examples.
The learner’s description of body composition and cardiovascular are at a
Distinction standard as they have provided a thorough description detailing
examples. For example how different body compositions are a benefit to
different sports.
To achieve a Pass learners would have correctly described the health
related components of fitness without giving examples.

Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249) (cont’d)
Assessment criterion:
1.5
Describe tests that measure components of health- and skill-related
fitness
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Distinction by providing a comprehensive
description of how each test is carried out, providing lots of detail about
what component of fitness it measures as well as examples of who would
use the test.
To achieve a Pass the learner would give a brief description of each test
and what it measures.
To achieve a Merit the learner would give a detailed description of each test
and how it measures the component of fitness in question.
Grade awarded for this assessment criterion - Distinction
Assessment criterion:
1.6
Describe the principles of training
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Merit by describing the principles of training
and giving detail by providing examples.
To achieve a Distinction the learner would need to give more detail and
give a more thorough description for example mentioning the FITT
principles.
To achieve a Pass the learner would describe the principles of training
without giving specific examples.

Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249) (cont’d)
Assessment criterion:
1.7
Describe the appropriate methods of training for each of the
components of fitness
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Merit grade by correctly describing the
appropriate methods of training for each of the components of fitness. It is
nice to see a good range of sports and the use of different sports to show
how different muscles are used eg a runner using swimming instead of
running to save stress on the joints.
For a Pass the learner will describe the appropriate methods of training for
each of the components of fitness. The answer would not include a detailed
description eg interval training improves speed and muscular endurance.
For a Distinction the learner would use specific examples to
comprehensively describe the principles of training eg in aerobic exercise,
which is steady and not too fast, the heart is able to supply enough oxygen
to the muscles. Aerobic training improves cardiovascular fitness. Anaerobic
exercise is performed in short, fast bursts where the heart cannot supply
enough oxygen to the muscles. Anaerobic training improves the ability of
the muscles to work without enough oxygen when lactic acid is produced.
Fartlek training or 'speed play' training involves varying your speed and the
type of terrain over which you run, walk, cycle or ski. It improves aerobic
and anaerobic fitness.

Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249) (cont’d)
Assessment criterion:
2.1
Describe the structure and function of the main body systems
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Merit by giving detailed descriptions of the
structure and function of the main body systems.
Much of this work is at a Distinction standard. For example their description
of the digestive system provides comprehensive details, naming the
components of the system and all of the functions. A little more detail is
needed for some of the other descriptions to bring the grade for the
assessment criterion up to a Distinction. For example their description of
the nervous system should talk about roles of the central and peripheral
nervous system.
The learner would have achieved a Pass by giving a basic description of
the structure and function of the main body systems eg the skeletal system
supports the body and gives it shape. It is made up of bones in different
shapes and sizes.
Grade awarded for this assessment criterion - Merit
Assessment criterion:
2.2
Describe the long-term and short-term effects of exercise on the
main body systems.
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Pass by saying what the short term and long
term effects are.
To get a Merit the learner would need to describe why the effects occur, eg
exercise increases metabolism by burning more energy.
To achieve a Distinction the learner would need to explain this further, eg
because the body is burning more energy from exercise the metabolism
increases to get more fuel, and link to the benefits.
Grade awarded for this assessment criterion – Pass

Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249) (cont’d)
Assessment criterion:
3.1
Describe measures for body composition
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has provided a comprehensive description of one test,
including comparisons to the national average, which is Distinction
standard, however they have only covered a skin fold test. More than one
example is required and must include measuring BMI and waist to hip ratio.
Grade awarded for this assessment criterion - Not Yet Achieved
Assessment criterion:
3.2
Demonstrate measures for body composition
External Moderator commentary:
As above the learner has only carried out a skin fold test and would also
need to complete a BMI and a waist to hip ratio test
In order to grade this assessment criterion we would need to see evidence
of how much support the learner has had in carrying out the test, this could
be provided through a written report by the learner detailing how they
carried out the test (certified by the Teacher) or a witness testimony.
Without this evidence the learner could only achieve a Pass as we would
have to assume they had completed the assessment criterion with Teacher
support. For a Merit they would be allowed minimal support from their
Teacher and at a Distinction they would have no support. At a Distinction
grade we would also expect to see a good rapport with their partner.

Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249) (cont’d)
Assessment criterion:
3.3
Carry out tests to measure components of health-related fitness
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Pass grade by showing the score achieved
from completing the test. As with assessment criterion 3.2, to achieve a
Merit or Distinction additional evidence will need to be supplied such as a
learners description (certified by the Teacher) or witness testimony.
Without this evidence the learner could only achieve a Pass as we would
have to assume they had completed this with Teacher support. For a Merit
they would be allowed minimal support from their Teacher and at a
Distinction they would have no support. At a Distinction grade we would
also expect to see a good rapport with their partner.
Grade awarded for this assessment criterion - Pass
Assessment criterion:
3.4
Carry out tests to measure components of skill-related fitness
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Pass grade by showing the score achieved
from completing the test. As with assessment criterion 3.2, to achieve a
Merit or Distinction additional evidence will need to be supplied such as a
learners description (certified by the Teacher) or witness testimony.

Unit 01 - Principles of health and fitness (M/506/5249) (cont’d)
Assessment criterion:
3.5
Assess the positives and negatives of these measures
External Moderator commentary:
The learner has achieved a Pass as they have assessed the positives and
negatives of each measure, eg suitable for large groups, not much
equipment needed.
To achieve a Merit the learner will need to add some description to each
positive or negative point. They should link the positive and negatives to
specific participants and say why this is, eg a negative could be that the
participant is self-conscious and doesn’t perform the test to the best of their
ability.
To achieve a Distinction the learner must show awareness of factors which
would affect the result, eg the temperature of the room, and draw a
conclusion on the usefulness of each test.
Grade awarded for this assessment criterion – Pass

Summative feedback
I confirm this is all my own work.

Teacher/Assessor comments: (please continue overleaf if necessary)
You have provided some good work here, much of it at a Merit standard. Make sure that you always
provide as much detail as you can with your answers and give examples where appropriate.
Assessment criteria 3.1 and 3.2 have not yet been achieved. The description you have provided in
3.1 is very good but you need to do this for all of the tests that we learned about in class. Similarly
for 3.2 you need to demonstrate all of the tests. Make sure that you provide evidence of carrying out
these tests, not just of the final results.
Overall you have made a very good start to this unit. Please keep up the good work.
I confirm I have graded this work against the grading descriptors for
the qualification.
