1. Explain the concept of ‘reform Darwinism’ and why Progressives believed it to be important. (10
points).Identify two specific successes of the Progressive movement and explain how they were
successful (5 points). Name two preeminent African Americans of the era, and explain how each
perceived black-white relations in America of the early twentieth century (10 points).
2. Discuss President Theodore Roosevelt’s attitude toward and involvement in building the Panama
Canal. Include in your answer the other parties involved, and the dollar amounts that changed hands.
(20 points). How did the Roosevelt Corollary justify the U.S. purchase of the land for the Panama
Canal? (5 points).
3. Before it entered World War I, what was the attitude of the U.S. government to the war in Europe, and
why did it resist getting involved? (10 points). Name at least two events contributed to a change of
attitude and policy in the U.S.? (10 points). What is your opinion of the military tactics that John J.
Pershing utilized for the AEF in France? (5 points).
