Congratulations to all involved in the Hair & Beauty Show
26 January 2016
The Hair and Beauty show was a massive success. Well done to everyone who took part. The quality of
work produced was outstanding. We had some fantastic feedback from parents and salons who came to
see the show.

We have, as usual, had a very busy term and a number of events
have taken place, many of which are reported in this newsletter.
The make-up in the Hair and Beauty Show was outstanding and
was a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their
exceptional talent. I was also delighted this that our girls’
netball team reached the national finals competing at Roedean
School against many other public schools. They did not win but
did amazingly well to get through to the finals and were brilliant
ambassadors for the school. Finally well done to all students on
the outstanding work they do to raise money for various
different charitable causes.

On an academic front many of our year groups have sat prepublic exams this term and we have shared the results with you.
Hopefully, this has given students an indication of where they are
now and what they still need to do in preparation for their exams
in the summer term. It is never too early to start to revise!
Details of revision sessions over the Easter holidays for Year 11
students are included in the March Raising Achievement
Newsletter which will be emailed to parents.

Unfortunately there is limited parking on the school site for
visitors. If there is not a free visitor’s bay outside of main
reception please park in the layby opposite the school. I would
particularly ask that parents avoid coming on to the school site at
the end of the day to enable each of our students to leave the
premises safely. Thank you for your co-operation.

Gold Award
Philosophy & Ethics
Spiritual Arts Competition
At the end of every academic year I give students the opportunity to enter a national competition linking the arts to spirituality.
Most year 7 and 8 students take part as a reward for all of their
hard work throughout the year but the competition is open to all
age groups. I was so impressed with the entries and really struggled to narrow it down as there is a limit on how many I am
allowed to enter.
Although we didn’t have a winning entry we did have a runner
up, huge congratulations to Mia Wells and Lauren Paul in year
10, their work is being displayed on the internet for everyone to
see at: http://www.natre.org.uk/about-natre/projects/spiritedarts/art-in-heaven/2015/faith-vs-doubt/

On Friday the 8 January 2016 six former King John students
attended the Essex County Council Duke of Edinburgh Gold
Award presentation at Chelmsford Cathedral. Completion of this
award requires student to be highly motivated and dedicated and
it is a fantastic achievement for these students who were also
completing their studies. It is highly regarded amongst
universities and employers alike due to the life skills that
students develop whilst completing the sections. In order to complete this award the students had to undertake five sections including; voluntary service, physical recreation, learning a new
skill, complete a residential and then two expeditions. The students’ practice expedition took place in Snowdon, Wales and
then their qualifying assessed expedition was completed after a
week in Morocco completing a trek in the Atlas Mountains and
finishing with a climb of Mt Toubkal. The students will now be
invited to St James Palace to meet Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, the awards Patron.
Tranquillity Garden
We are looking to develop a Tranquillity Garden as an area where
students will be able to sit and chat with someone if they feel in
need of support. The aim of the garden is to provide a safe and
peaceful environment where students will feel calm and able to
talk. We will also be looking to involve our students in growing
and planting flowers and shrubs so that they feel a sense of
developing this project for themselves. The garden will be a memorial to those students who we have had the honour and privilege of meeting and working with but who are sadly no longer
with us. We want to be able to celebrate their life and memory.
We will be supported by the Jack Petchey fund and the Lions of
Castle Point to get our project underway. If anyone would like to
donate in any way, for example, old garden furniture, expertise or
a monetary donation it would be very much appreciated. If you
are able to donate or contribute to the project, please contact
Mrs Caroline Anderson (ext 6726) at the school. Many thanks for
your support.
Also a special well done to the following:
Year 8: Jessica Yarham, Sophie Painter, Sophie Bush,
Connie Willis, Sophie Nichols, Jasmine Getty, Aimee
Rawden, Mollie Gray, Rheanne Lau, Darcie Clayton
& Aleasha Kemp.
Year 9: Jersy Sandhu, Lucy Jones, Grace Thipthorne-Smith,
Maddi Lawrence, Evie Huggins & Megan Bishop.

SIXTH FORM
Cameron Cole Year 12 Mooting Competition
We recently held hustings try-outs in school in order to select candidates to represent the school in a mooting competition, which challenges students to act as legal professionals in a mock court case.
Students had 5 minutes to argue whether or not they
thought the OSCAR nominations were racist.
Cameron Cole Year 12 and one other student, were selected to represent the Sixth Form.
Linda Jeffrey and I had the immense pleasure of watching
Cameron compete in the Giles Wilson Mock Trial mooting
competition last night. Unfortunately, the other student
failed to show up on the night.
The quarter final involved putting a case for refusal of bail
to the 'court'. Candidates were given a brief a week prior
and had to draw arguments from the information given and
put forward a persuasive case to convince the court of the
legal position on the bail application. Cameron was aided in
preparing the case by fellow students Elle MacDonald and
Tia Dutton and by the fabulous Miss Ware, who all helped
sift through the twenty page document to pinpoint the key
details pertaining to the case for refusal of bail.
On the evening, students waited in a green room and were
called one team at a time to present for 5 minutes per team
member. Candidates were required to follow the normal
formal procedures of a court room such as addressing the
bench as Your Worships, referring to each other as my
learned colleague and being fluent in the use of terms such
as alleged, defendant and claimant. Contestants were interrupted and challenged by the barristers on points of
their arguments and had to think on their feet to answer
with compelling justifications of their points, whilst all the
time being aware of the stringent time limits.
Cameron, having being let down at the eleventh hour, was
highly praised for his willingness to continue to put forward
his case on his own. He did an amazing job and was congratulated by the judges for his professional manner, courtroom presence, perfect pace and tone. The judges were
impressed with his excellent response when challenged
about the defendant's prior career. Cameron agreed that
he may indeed have been a city trader but that that did not
mean he should consider himself above the law. Both Mrs
Jeffrey and I were in awe of Cameron's ability to think on
his feet and his ability to remain unflustered in doing so. He
was an excellent candidate.
Competing against strong teams from SEEVIC (last year's
winners), Greensward, Southend High School for Boys and
Belfairs. Cameron definitely did King John proud and we
are delighted to report that Cameron successfully got
through to the next stage.
Well done to the whole team, Elle and Tia who helped prepare the case, Miss Ware who provided knowledge, expertise and passion and spent a considerable about of time
coaching the team, and most especially to Cameron himself.
Hannah Arrowsmith.

Young Voices Final
On Monday 25 January we went to the O2 to perform as part of
the Young Voices Choir. It was an amazing experience, there were
7,447 children in the choir!
We sang a total of 10 songs
one of which was ‘Transport
of
Delight’. We also sang
with a celebrity guest singer,
Laura Wright, who sang at
the Rugby World Cup in
2015.
All the performers had the
same t-shirt on and had a little torch, which we waved in the air
when it got dark. It was wonderful to perform at the O2.
Miss Ware and Mrs Anderson would like to add that the students
represented the school extremely well and we are very proud of
them. Thanks also to Derek Turner, who ran the choir, getting our
students up to standard and pushing for the event to happen.

March 2016 at the Roedean School in Brighton. It was a long day
for the girls with an
8.25am registration and
4pm finish.
SPORTS NEWS
District Champions
The swimmers from King John were crowned overall District
champions at the annual Castle Point and Rochford gala. There
were age group wins for the year 7 girls, year 9 girls and senior
boys. The boys and girls overall teams were also awarded to King
John. Well done to all of the swimmers that competed. A fantastic result!
Teams
Year 7 girls Bronte O’Dea, Keira Bott, Somiya Aitmari, Brogan
Wilson and Emily Gannon
Year 7 boys Luke Thompson, Ben Read, Sam Stowe, Theo
Johnson, Sam Davies, Adam Burns
Year 8 girls Madeleine Allinghan, Katie Evans, Natasha Hart, Lily
Capon, Isobel Hodges
Year 8 boys Charlie Woodward, James Carroll, Sam Weller, Max
Ebdon, James Wells
Year 9 girls Nyah Kauders, Erin Lee, Alyssa Reynolds, Fleur
Bossom, Lucie Burton
Year 9 boys Kieran Reeves-Debnam, Lewis Klinker, Nathan CanoLopez, Jack Hogarth, Kobe Easter
They all played brilliantly
and we had a great day.
Every single student
represented the school
and themselves impeccably. We are very lucky to
have such mature and
resilient girls. We had a
very tough pool and the girls held their own and worked really
hard.
In the first game our squad suffered sickness and concussion!
Despite all our efforts we didn’t quite make it out of the pool and
into the semi finals.
A huge thank you to Emersons for sponsoring us at this event, the
girls looked great in their new kit.
Thank you to all who came to cheer us on and for all the messages of support we have received. A special thank you to Karen
McGlynn who helped me with coaching the team, and Jo Dickson
for umpiring.
The King John school have never made it this far before so whatever the result the girls made history this weekend.
We have a huge talent in this team and we are really looking forward to continuing our training to get us back there next year!

Celebrating Shakespeare
To commemorate 400 years since Shakespeare’s death we are
attempting to write 154 sonnets at the KJS, like the bard himself!
Staff have already begun composing their sonnets; students are
invited to do the same, with three prizes up for grabs. Closing
date for submission to Mrs Murray is Thursday 24 March.
5
How to write a sonnet: A sonnet is a poem based on love or admiration. Sonnets are always 14 lines long; they often follow a
rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg (rhyming couplet at the end).
If students are very brave, they can try to follow the meter
pattern of iambic pentameter. There are tutorials that can be
watched on YouTube on how to create a sonnet. We are also
running workshops in Creative Writing Club every Tuesday.

YEAR 7
YEAR 10
Year 10 Textiles students shine at Basildon Fashion Awards
2016
Year 7 achievements:
Zack Maher –7-03- Congratulations to Zack who performed at
Her Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday 14th February in The Lazy
Ace. Zack played Niall from one direction and was absolutely
superb!
Deborah Oakley –7-03- Good luck to Deborah who is currently
rehearsing as part of the ensemble in High School Musical that
will be performed at the Towngate Theatre in May.
On Tuesday 1 of March the Eastgate centre in Basildon held its
annual Fashion awards evening at
the Towngate Theatre. The event
is sponsored by the ECOH, New
Look, Debenhams and the South
Essex College who also showcase
some of their fashion students’
work on the catwalk. This year saw
the return of guest judge and esteemed stylist to the stars and
fashion designer, Joey Bevan. Joey presented two of his collections at the event which can be seen in the photos below. Our
year 10 Textiles students had entered the Basildon Fashion
Awards Design Competition. The topic was fashion history and
they had to choose an era to inspire their designs. There were 8
finalists. The top 3 designs would be made to be modelled on
the catwalk. 2 of our students Grace Willis and Jessica Miller
were chosen to be part of the 5 highly commended entries each
receiving a certificate and a Debenhams gift voucher. I was extremely proud of all of the students’ entries and to have made it
into the top 8 was a huge achievement.
Miss Beeney
Head of Textiles
Keira Bott -7-03 - In January Kiera competed against other children from swimming clubs in the olympic pool! Keira’s times
were so good that she was drawn in races against children much
older than her. Keira has also competed for King John in the
Swimming Gala. Well done Keira, keep up the good work!
Jessie Cotgrove- 7-05- Congratulations to Jessie for her fantastic
efforts and ability for being accepted into Masters Performing
Arts School. Well done, we look forward to hearing more about
this and supporting you with this new opportunity.
Louis Faiers – 7-09- Louis has been selected to support the Essex
marching corps in Dublin during the St Patrick’s day celebrations.
We wish him all the best of luck in this amazing opportunity and
experience.
Year 7 Right Respecting Friendship shields
Each tutor group was set the challenge of creating a shield that
represented their work in tutor groups on friendship and the
Rights Respecting school focus. The students all produced fantastic results and the overall winner was 7-07.
8
YEAR 10
I am hoping to volunteer at major events such as the
British Masters being held at The Grove, The Women’s
British Open held at Woburn, The Ladies European
Masters held at The Buckinghamshire Golf Club, the
ladies European Access Tour held at Stoke-by-Nayland
and the BMW Championships held at Wentworth. Volunteering at any of these events would be such an
amazing experience.
My first England Golf Youth Panel Conference
Ysobel Lush The youth panel offers opportunities
for young people who want to encourage others to play
sports, including help with getting coaching qualifications in rugby and in tri-golf.
When I arrived I was made to
feel very welcome even
though I was the youngest volunteer there. Phil, who runs
the conference told us about
the aims of the panel and what
we would get out of the
meetings.
will take lots of photos of the work I do because the
youth panel will be putting together a portfolio which
will be great for in the future.
Another aim I have for the year is to increase the numbers in the ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ scheme. I have contacted
my old junior school to see if I can go into an assembly
and encourage young children to get into the game,
especially the girls.
We are all aiming to volunteer
in sport for as many hours as possible. Phil told us that
volunteering gets you jobs! It improves your qualifications; looks great on a CV and gives you access into careers in sport. He also said its worth a lot more than a
GCSE, an A level or a degree. It is also very rewarding.
We were told at the next meeting we would have interviews and videos taken of us about our aims and
achievements. Overall my whole experience was amazing, it has helped develop my speaking and listening
skills.
I have so many more ideas and I can’t wait to develop
new skills at the next meeting. It was a privilege to be
part of it all. I hope that I will reach my goals, and continue getting people, especially girls into the sport.
Phil asked us to write down 3 things that summed up
our personality. I wrote - hard working, organised and
sporty. We then had to think of one thing that we are
most proud of in terms of sport. I thought of my
achievements in Rugby. At school, there is no rugby
available to girls. As a rugby player for Basildon and Essex County, I wanted the girls in my school to be able to
play rugby.
At the start of 2015 I was offered the chance to be an
‘England Ambassador’ to try and get girls into golf, similar to the youth panel but aimed solely at girls. It was a
trial initiative in Essex. We had a few meetings and took
some fun photos so that when girls saw the posters
they could see what fun it was. We came up with a
name for the scheme and called it ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ because it does! I volunteered for many hours to encourage girls to get into the game and it was a great success.
It took a lot of time as I had to nag our school rugby
teacher, Mr Sexton, to get it going. I put up notices all
over the school asking girls to write down their names if
they were interested. There was an amazing response.
Girls came every week and enjoyed it. I was so happy
and pleased with what I had achieved.
The scheme started again at the beginning of January
this year. It will now be rolled out into eight other
counties. We are hoping to increase the numbers of
girls playing golf. For all our efforts in volunteering, we
received the Young Leaders Award. We have also been
put forward for a team award for all our efforts in
getting more girls into golf!
Next we moved onto our aims for the year. Personally I
am determined to get more girls into golf, I’d like to
volunteer at my golf club and help the Pro’s with their
lessons. I also hope to be able to take beginner golfers
out on the course for a few holes to have some fun and
help them to make friends.

King John school and are focusing on their achievements in lessons as well as out of school.
Charity focus- The year group have been raising money for
Great Ormond Street Hospital. They have continued to run
thoughtful Thursdays, a cake sale, and many more activities,
also supporting events held by other year groups.
All their combined efforts and events have raised an outstanding £1,627.36.This has been down to your amazing support, the
fantastic work and organisation by our charity representatives
including all the year 7 students and teachers. We look forward
to continuing this work in the summer term.

Roller City Trip
The year 7 students had a fantastic time at the Roller city trip
on Tuesday 8 March. The students took part in games whilst
skating which saw their ability and confidence on the skates
improve. There were some students who are clearly expert
skaters and it was fantastic to see so many of the year group
having a fun social time together. It was great to see how
strong their friendships have grown over the first two terms at
secondary school which was clear from the way they supported each other on the rink.
The charity representatives for each tutor group worked especially hard raising over £100 in a cake sale for Valentines day.
7-03 had a particularly great time running a wacky races session.
We just want to say a huge congratulations to all of year 7
and we look forward to seeing the year group achieving both
academically and personally in the Summer term.

YEAR 10
Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge
AQA Unlocking Potential
120 year 10 students took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out
Challenge the week beginning 8 February. The training was great
fun and interactive. During the training learners received a
“Speak Out” Challenge workbook and certificate. They also had
the chance to speak several times and learn to think on their feet.
They found out how to prepare a speech and deliver a short
speech based on a personal experience such as a holiday, an
achievement or a memorable event. They acquired skills that
would last them a lifetime and enjoyed doing so.
This year, Toby Arnold and Taylor Olley have been participating
in the AQA Unlocking Potential Scheme. This scheme, run by the
Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, recognises young people who have
shown resilience and determination, and we were thrilled that
Taylor and Toby were selected. As part of the scheme, the boys
have been assigned an athlete mentor, and we are very lucky to
be working with World Champion sailor, Sam Brearey.
Sam comes in regularly to help the boys organise a community
project. The boys wanted to raise as much money as possible for
charity so they have chosen to run a school-based fete on 14
April, fundraising for Help for Heroes and Gastroparesis UK.
To publicise their event, Sam organised for the boys to speak on
BBC Radio Essex on 18 January which was an amazing opportunity.
Then on Monday 1 February, Toby Arnold and Taylor Olley were
invited to Leicester City Football Club for a team-building day,
and the boys competed in a Dragon’s Den style event, pitching
their event and ironing out the details!
Taylor is keen to raise awareness of gastroparesis as it is not a
well-known condition (or charity) so Sam also arranged for Taylor to film a segment for The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust whilst we
were there, and we got to go up to one of the boxes on the halfway line to film which gave us a fantastic view of the stadium!
Sam is in a few more times to help the boys organise their
event, and then we will be publicising it in school to raise as
much money as possible. Toby is already busy in workshop designing and building things for the fete, and we’ll be asking our
year 10 Student Leaders to get involved further too.
We look forward to sharing more news from the scheme.
