New Books
The Coinage of the Opountian Lokrians by Humphries,
Jacqueline Morineau and Delbridge, Diana. RNS SP50
Hardback with dust jacket, 254 pages, 61 plates
£60.00
This publication deals with the entire coinage, silver and bronze, of the
Opountian Lokrians in Central Greece from the early fourth century BC to the
later first century AD. Introductory chapters deal with the history and mythology of the region and the various forms of ethnic found on the coins and
in literary and epigraphic sources. They are followed by full die-studies of all
series in both metals and discussion of their dates and significance. The silver, belonging mostly if not entirely to the fourth century BC, comprises an
abundant series of staters of high artistic quality, drachms, triobols, and
smaller fractions in several denominations. The bronze is divided into 42
groups, ranging in date from the mid-4th century BC to AD c.68/69.
Coinage of the Iranian Huns and their Successors from Bactria to
Gandhara (4th to 8th Century CE) by Vondrovec, Klaus
2 volumes, Hardback, 960 pages, colour illustrations throughout
£150.00
The aim of this volume, by providing a commented and most complete view of
the entire coinage of the Iranian Huns, is to make coins as a primary historic
source accessible to the reader and usable for further research for all historic
disciplines. The book contains 10 chapters, the Kidarites, Dinars (of the Kidarite
and Alkhan period), Alkhan, Tobazini, the Hephthalites, Sasanian Coinage and
Imitations, Nezak Shahs, Alkhan-Nezak Crossover, the Western Turk Period and
finally Gandharan Copper. Each chapter discusses the numismatic evidence based
on thorough typological analysis and a short historical overview summarizes the
written sources. The catalogue is arranged by coin-type but pictures every
specimen in the Aman ur Rahman collection. In addition, a fully illustrated
typological index is provided.
The Abbey and Mint of Bury St Edmonds from 1279 BNS SP11
by Eaglen, Robin J.
Hardback with dust jacket, 300 pages, 21 plates
£45.00
This volume is a sequel to The Abbey and Mint of Bury St Edmunds to 1279
(London, 2006). It concentrates on the abbey and mint from 1279 until the
closure of the mint c. 1329. An initial chapter outlines the historical
background to the operation of the abbey and mint to 1279, based upon the
far more detailed account in the earlier companion volume. It provides
a context for the following two chapters covering the reigns of Edward I and
Edward II to the accession of Edward III. A concluding chapter summarizes
major events affecting the abbey until its dissolution in 1539. The
Catalogue in this volume incorporates a die study of almost 2,500 coins
struck at Bury during the fifty year period to c. 1329.
Volume 1 is now available at £15.00
