Pompey must pay
FOOTBALL: The Premier
League will dock £1million from
Portsmouth’s parachute payments for
2011 unless the south coast club pay
that sum to Tottenham over the
aborted transfer of keeper Asmir
Begovic. The league have
written to Portsmouth this week
ordering the club to pay the
money to Spurs. Although
Begovic never moved to Tottenham,
the clubs had agreed a joint fee with
Younes Kaboul with the agreement
that £1million would be paid to Spurs
if the Bosnia international moved
elsewhere.
Begovic eventually moved to Stoke,
shortly after which Pompey went into
administration, since when they have
been disputing whether they actually
owe Tottenham the money. Now the
Premier League have become involved
and have been satisfied that
Portsmouth are contractually obliged
to pay Spurs the £1million. If
the money still does not materialise,
the league will top-slice it off the cash
due to be received by Portsmouth at
the end of next year in parachute
payments and pass it on to Spurs
directly.
Hendrie is back
FOOTBALL: Bradford City have
snapped up former Aston Villa
midfielder Lee Hendrie on a short-term
contract. Hendrie is hoping to
prolong his career in the Football
League at Valley Parade after being
released by Derby in the summer. The
33-year-old, who won one full England
cap under Glenn Hoddle, is teaming
back up with Bantams manager Peter
Taylor, who was his coach during his
days with England Under-21s.
n Charlton have signed West Brom
goalkeeper Luke Daniels on a month’s
loan as cover for the injured Rob Elliot,
who will be sidelined for three to four
weeks after chipping a bone in his
elbow in training on Tuesday. Daniels,
22, will vie with Ross Worner, the only
other senior keeper on Charlton’s
books, to face Tranmere this
afternoon.
Line-up complete
CRICKET: South Northumberland
will feature alongside Swardeston at
the finals of the Cockspur Club
Twenty20 on Thursday after claiming
the one remaining place at the Rose
Bowl. They beat Bracebridge Heath
and will now face Bootle at 3.25pm,
with Swardeston playing Wimbledon
in the first semi-final at 12.35pm.
Coverage on Sky Sports 3 starts at
12.30pm and the final will start at
7pm. See the EDP on Wednesday and
Thursday for previews of Swardeston’s
big day.
Derby day delight
FOOTBALL: Norwich City Ladies
won derby bragging rights, beating
Ipswich 3-1 in the SE Combination
League. Laura Thacker put Norwich in
front before Charlie Branch doubled
the lead. Sophie Gillett scrambled
home the third after Jordan Arnoup’s
long ball had deceived the Ipswich
keeper and

an entry to the race and we felt this
was unfair and inequitable. Also,
casual class teams could still apply
to enter the race if they affiliated and
interestingly the option of affiliating
was taken-up by three teams who are
entered in this year’s race.”
Vaughan-Arbuckle believes the
longevity of the race is in large part
due to the loyalty of runners, clubs
and officials.
“I believe the RNR is the only race to
recognise loyalty by an official award
after ten and 20 years,” he said. “It is,
of course, a source of great pride and
satisfaction for the committee that
individuals and teams view the RNR
as a permanent fixture in their annual
race calendar. In a largely individual
sport, a team event like the RNR
encourages a team mentality rarely
seen in running. It is this aspect and
the considerable challenge of fielding
a successful team which makes the
race fiercely competitive and yet
run in such a friendly atmosphere.”
explains race director.”
Andy Smith (Ryston Runners)
and Richard Sales (Norwich Road
Runners) will both make their 20th
appearance while another 25 runners
will qualify for a ten year appearances
medal if they reach the start line and
a blind runner, Simon Webb, will
contest stage 15 for The Stragglers.
Within this year’s competitors
will also be the 10,000th runner to
compete and, to mark the feat, that
runner will be presented with a
special award at the post-race prize
giving ceremony. City of Norwich
AC aim for a 12th consecutive win
in the blue riband ‘Club’ class with
their main challengers likely to
come from Ely Runners or Norwich
Road Runners. Other contenders
will almost certainly include Oxfordbased Headington Road Runners,
Paddock Wood AC from Kent and
Norfolk Gazelles.

Slovenian Borut Bozic gave the
Vacansoleil team their second stage
win of The Tour of Britain by sprinting
to victory in Colchester yesterday.
Only Team Sky’s Greg Henderson
was within touching distance on the
race to the line for the seventh stage
honours. Richie Porte finished
third, with the top three collecting
time bonuses to trim their deficit to
race leader Michael Albasini, who
came in 20th.
Albasini now holds the yellow jersey
by one minute five seconds from Bozic,
with Porte a further nine seconds
behind.
The Swiss rider, who won Stage
Three into Swansea on Monday and
maintained his lead in Norfolk on
Thursday, spoke of his relief at having
safely negotiated the final road stage
of The Tour, with just London’s circuit
race remaining.
“I was always looking forward to this
moment, normally in the last stage not
so much happens and it should be a
bunch sprint. I am happy to still have
the Yellow Jersey.
“Three days ago I wasn’t so sure to
bring it this far when we had just four
riders in the race.
“It’s perfect now with three stage
wins and hopefully also the yellow at
the end in London.”
Yesterday’s stage was characterised
by a long breakaway containing Sigma
Sport – Specialized’s Tom Murray and
Pieter Jacobs, which went away after
21 miles of racing. For the second day
running in the East of England massive
crowds turned out to welcome The
Tour of Britain to Suffolk and Essex,
with sunshine and good weather
greeting the riders for the start in Bury
St Edmunds.
With Team Sky a constant presence
at the front of the peloton, the break’s
lead only just rose above three minutes
at its greatest, before steadily being
slashed as The Tour reached Essex just
after passing through Sudbury and
climbing Ballingdon Hill, both
described as being the scene of ‘Tour
de France style crowds’, by cycling
journalists after the race.
With 25 kilometres to go, Murray
had no response when Jacobs sensed
him slowing and attacked, leaving the
Briton to be swallowed up by the
peloton.
Ahead the Topsport Vlaanderen rider
persevered on alone, before being
caught with five kilometres remaining
on the outskirts of Colchester.

New teams bid
for relay glory
Round Norfolk Relay race director
Ian
Vaughan-Arbuckle
believes
this year’s 24th annual renewal is
breaking new ground.
A total of 54 teams have entered
the 194 mile, 17 stage unbroken relay
which begins today at Lynnsport in
King’s Lynn and travels around the
county before finishing at the same
venue tomorrow lunchtime.
Changes to the entry criteria sees
two new clubs, West Norfolk AC and
Birketts’ Runners AC, join established
powerhouses like City of Norwich AC
who will contest a revised route.
“The restriction was not universally
popular but we felt it was the right
thing to do in the circumstances of the
race being grossly over-subscribed,”
said Vaughan-Arbuckle. “There is
no doubt that the race has ‘arrived’
and that the 55 vacancies are very
much sought after. The demise of
the casual class was brought about
because affiliated athletic clubs,
some of which had supported the
race for many years, could not get
