Trapezium Featuring fabrics from the Trapezium Collection, a part of the HOFFMAN SPECTRUM digital-print division. Quilt design by Linda Fitch 52” x 52” Please note that a few of the fabrics we used are directional, please cut accordingly. Use the color photo of our quilt as a reference guide. It will be helpful to keep the pieces separated, marked and organized. Cutting Fabric A For the Half Square Triangle block, cut (1) strip at 12 ½”. Open the strip and cut a 45 degree angle on one end, using your cutting mat or ruler as a guide. Cut another 45 degree angle in the opposite direction, to make one large triangle. Using the edge of the previous, cut a second triangle, by cutting another 45 degree angle, in the opposite direction. Proceed to cut the third triangle, using the edge of the previous. (All for Piece A) The middle piece is flipped to conserve fabric. For the Square in a Square block, cut (1) strip 4 ½ " WOF. Sub-cut (4) 4 ½” squares. Fabric B For the Half Square Triangle block, cut (1) strip at 12 ½”. (All for Piece A) For the Square in a Square block, cut (1) strip at 4 ½" WOF. Sub-cut (2) 4 1/2" squares. Fabric C For the HST block, cut (1) strip at 12 ½”. (All for Piece A) For the Square in a Square block, cut (1) strip 6 3/8" WOF. Sub-cut (4) 6 3/8” squares and turn those into 4 ½” squares on point, because this fabric has an obvious direction. To cut on point, place your ruler at the middle of the left edge and align to the middle of the top edge. Cut this corner off. Then measure from the top (point) to the middle of the right edge and cut off this corner. Proceed until you have cut off all corners and have a new (4 ½”) square. Fabric D The fabric we used is a border print. There is a subtle transition from large butterflies to small and a good portion of the fabric is comprised of dots. Parallel to the selvedge, cut a 4 ¾” strip from the section with the large butterflies. Cut a 45 degree angle off one end of the strip, using the guide on your cutting mat and or ruler. Measure 17 ½” from the furthest point, mark and cut another 45 degree angle, making the piece symmetrical. For the 2nd piece to be cut from that strip, measure from the furthest point (of the last cut) 17 ½” and cut a 45 degree angle to make the piece symmetrical. Continue with the 3rd piece in the same manner. Cut a 4 ¾” strip from the medium sized butterflies. Cut (3) pieces, as done previously. Same measurement (17 ½”). Proceed to cut the last 4 ¾” strip from the smallest butterflies and cut (3) pieces as before. All of the Fabric D pieces cut so far are for Piece B. From the remaining dot section of Fabric D, cut (5) 6 7/8” squares (on grain). Cut in half once diagonally, making (10) triangles. This is for Piece C. Also cut (2) 4 ½” squares, for Square in Square blocks. We fussy cut these squares focusing on the small butterflies. Fabric E Cut (2) strips at 4 ½” WOF. Sub-cut each strip into (2) 4 ½ x 12 ½” rectangles and (2) 4 ½” squares, for a total of (4) rectangles and (4) squares. Cut (1) 8 7/8” square. Cut in half once diagonally. Cut (6) strips 2 ¼” WOF strips for binding. Fabric F Cut (2) strips at 4 1/2" WOF. Sub-cut each strip into (2) 4 ½ x 12 ½” rectangles and (3) 4 ½” squares, for a total of 4 rectangles and (6) squares. Cut (1) 8 7/8” square and then cut in half once diagonally. Fabric G Cut (2) strips at 4 ½” WOF. Sub-cut each strip into (2) 4 ½ x 12 ½” rectangles and (3) 4 ½” squares, for a total of 4 rectangles and (6) squares. Cut (1) 8 7/8” square. Cut in half once diagonally. Fabric H Cut (3) strips at 4 ½” WOF. Sub-cut 2 of the strips into (2) 4 ½ x 12 ½” rectangles, the 3rd strip into (8) 4 ½” squares, for a total of (4) rectangles and (8) 4 ½” squares. Construction Half Square Triangle Block Take a Fabric D/Piece C (dots) triangle and sew to the short side/edge (not ends) of Piece B. Repeat 8 times. Take that sewn piece and attach to the longest edge of Piece A, which is cut from Fabrics A, B and C. Make a total of (9) Half Square Triangle Blocks (3 each from Fabrics A, B and C). These blocks should measure 12 ½” at this time. If not, square up. Square in a Square Block ***Being that some of your blocks will not be complete, because they sit on outside edges, be mindful of which pieces are necessary and which are not. Refer to the photo for guidance. Attach the solid squares to the 2 opposite sides of your 4 ½” print squares, again if it applies. Attach the appropriate rectangles to each side of the 3 squares, if needed. Make (2) complete blocks using Fabric E. (3) blocks or a portion of a block using Fabrics F and G and (4) blocks using Fabric H. Any excess will be cut later. Sew the blocks in diagonal rows, as shown in the color photo. Please note that we have positioned the Half Square Triangle Blocks with the large butterflies at the bottom, the HST blocks with the mediumsized butterflies across the middle and the smallest butterflies on the top. Add the (4) triangles, cut from Fabrics E, F and G, to their respective corners. Sew the rows together and square off (trim) the excess. Layer backing, batting and pieced top and quilt as desired. For the binding, join all strips together end to end on a 45 degree angle; trim seam allowance and press seams. Press binding strip in half lengthwise to make double-fold binding. Attach to quilt.
