“Which One Is Bigger?”
In today’s world, children hear a
lot of different opinions about God.
Some say he doesn’t exist. Others say
there are many different gods.
Elijah faced a lot of the same
situations. Many people in his day were
claiming that Baal was the real god and
that OUR God was not.
Elijah had to take a stand. He
challenged the prophets of Baal to a
showdown at the top of Mt. Carmel. God
proved Himself that day to be bigger and
stronger than any “god” that man can
come up with.
In this lesson, the children will
come to understand that God is the one
true God and can handle any problem
they face.

Puppet Skit
Character: Silly Willy is a hyperactive puppet that thrives on “scaring”
the leaders/workers. (You can use any puppet your kids are
familiar with in your services.)
Leader: I can’t wait to talk about our Bible story today about Elijah...
(Silly Willy comes out freaked out!)
Silly Willy: He’s after me! He’s after me! RUN! RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Leader: Wait a second. Who’s after you?
Silly Willy: That big bully, Billy.
Leader: Bully Billy?
Silly Willy: That’s right! He’s gonna KILL ME!!!! (continues to freak out)
Leader: What are you talking about? He’s not going to kill you!
Silly Willy: Well, I can tell you this...he’s sure not gonna be nice to me. The other day he stuck Tiny
Timmy head in the toilet and gave him a swirly! Then, he stole Sweet Suzy’s baby doll and ran
it up the flagpole in front of the school. He’s mean! I just know he’s going to do something
mean to me next! I’m sick of all of this. I am tired of being scared of him all the time. I think I
am just going to run away to another country or something!
Leader: Now, Silly Willy, you can’t run away. That’s not the answer.
Silly Willy: Oh, yeah? Well, what am I supposed to do about it, then?
Leader: How about praying about it?
Silly Willy: Listen. I appreciate your idea and all, but you don’t understand. Bully Billy is mean and
he’s a BIG dude! I don’t know if praying about it will really help me on this one.
Leader: Are you kidding? Do you think Bully Billy is bigger than God?
Silly Willy: Well, I don’t know. Is God big enough to handle this problem?
Leader: Silly Willy, God is bigger than ANYTHING! If he can defeat sickness...if he can defeat death…
if He can defeat sin and the devil...don’t you think He can help you handle this problem?

Silly Willy: Well, I guess I didn’t think about it like that. So, how should I pray? That God will send fire
from heaven and BURN HIM UP?
Leader: No.
Silly Willy: Take THAT, Bully Billy!
Leader: No, Silly Willy!
Silly Willy: It’s CRISPY CRITTER time! WOO HOO!
Leader: Silly Willy! (Silly Willy straightens up) That’s not how you should pray. You should pray that
God will change Billy’s heart. You should pray that God will give you a way to become Billy’s
friend and tell him about Jesus. You should pray that God will protect you and give you
patience to handle being treated badly. That’s how you should pray.
Silly Willy: And God can do that? He’s that big?
Leader: He sure is! He’s the one true God and He is big enough to help you handle any problem you
face. Isn’t that awesome?
Silly Willy: It sure is! Thanks for telling me all of this today. I am going to go pray about it right now.
Leader: That’s a great idea. And speaking of ideas, don’t forget today’s Big Idea!
Silly Willy: Our God Is Sooooooo BIG!
Leader: That’s right! See you later, Silly Willy!
Silly Willy: See you later, everybody!

different items. They have to determine which one is bigger in size. Some of
them are common items that the kids are familiar with. Others of them are
crazy items that the kids would have no idea which is bigger. It’s all about
teamwork to decide which of items are bigger. The team that gets the most
answers correct wins!

The Message: (title slide)
Well, today, as we continue in our series called “Victory” looking at the big battles of the Bible,
we are studying a battle that does not consist of any warfare. It’s true. This was not a battle of
swords. It was not a battle of chariots. It was not a battle of armies. It was a battle of GODS!
I am going to tell you the story today, and I have some friends that are going to act it out for
you. Put your hands together for the hero of our story, The Prophet Elijah. (Elijah walks out acting
very kind, but reserved. He has a calm confidence in his God.) Elijah is a strong prophet of the one
true God. It’s the same God that we serve today, the maker of Heaven and Earth.
The people of Israel were supposed to be God’s chosen people. They were supposed to
serve Him and Him alone. But, there was a wicked King named Ahab who turned the people of Israel
away from God. They began to worship a false God named Baal. Now, we can’t show you Baal today
because he does not exist. He is a fake God. But, even though he was a fake God and not real, there
were many prophets that lead the people in worship to Baal. (prophets of Baal come out acting all
tough and “talking trash” to Elijah)
One day, Elijah got tired of seeing all of the people of Israel worshipping the false God, Baal.
So, he challenged the prophets of Baal to a battle. Not a war, but a battle to see whose God was the
real God. And Elijah said:
Elijah: (turns to prophets of Baal) “Get two bulls for us. Choose one for yourselves, and put it on the
wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to
it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who
answers by fire—he is God.”
They did exactly as Elijah asked. They took two bulls and put them on piles of wood. They
were ready for the battle of the Gods. Then, Elijah told them:

Elijah: “Now, you call on the name of your god, Baal. If he truly is God, he will send fire from Heaven
and light your sacrifice.”
The prophets of Baal did just that. They shouted and they wailed from morning until noon…
Prophet #1: “Baal, if you are god, send fire!”
Prophet #2: “Baal, we need you! Send some fire, please!”
Prophet #3: “C’mon, Baal! Give us a little fire! Burn, baby, burn!”
But there was no response; no one answered. So, the prophets began to dance around the
altar they had made. (prophets began to dance silly dances and sing silly songs)
Prophet #1: (does an Indian war dance) “We need fi-re! We need fi-re! We need fi-re”
Prophet #2: (to the tune of The Doors, “Light My Fire) “C’mon, Baal, light our fire!”
Prophet #3: (in his best Jerry Lee Lewis impression) “Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire!”
But there still was no answer. So, Elijah started to make fun of them.
Elijah: “Shout louder! Maybe he is in deep thought, or busy, on vacation. Hey, maybe he is asleep
and needs to be woken up!”
So, the prophets of Baal continued to shout even louder! (the prophets start to go crazy, now.
They yell random statements over and over and over) But, no one answered.
Now, it was Elijah’s turn. He told the prophets of Baal to get out of the way. Then he said:
Elijah: “Fill four large jars with water and dump it on the wood.”
They did exactly as Elijah asked. They took four jars of water and poured them on the wood.
(have the prophets act like they pour water on the wood) Then Elijah said:
Elijah: “Do it again.”
They did it again. Then Elijah said:
Elijah: “Do it a third time.”
(CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)
Lesson Three—”My God Is Bigger Than Your God!”
Page 31

(CONTINUED)
They did it one more time. Elijah is making sure when God answers, no one will think it was
an accident. This won’t be a lucky coincidence. Elijah is so confident in his God that he makes the
challenge more difficult.
Now, it’s Elijah’s turn to dance, pray, scream, holler and hope he can awaken his God. Do you
think he had to do that to get God to answer? (allow children to respond) Nope! He only has to pray
a simple little prayer:
Elijah: (looks to Heaven) “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you
are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your
command. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, O Lord, are
God, and that you are turning their hearts back to You again.”
Suddenly, fire falls from Heaven and consumes the bull, the wood, and even the water in the
trenches around the altar. God has answered Elijah’s prayer! And, that is the first lesson we can learn
from this battle of the Gods:
1. When I Pray, I Know God Hears Me (slide)
The prophets of Baal yelled and yelled and danced and screamed, but their god did not hear
them. Why? Because Baal wasn’t real. But, Elijah prayed a simple prayer to our God and He heard
and answered. Why? Because He is REAL!
Sometimes we think that when we pray God isn’t listening. We think that because He doesn’t
answer right away or the way we want Him to that it means He is not listening. Well, Elijah shows us
that God is listening, and when I pray, He hears me! When you pray, He hears you!
God answered in such an awesome way! He sent fire from heaven and burned up the sacrifice. What lesson does that teach us?
2. Nothing Is Too Difficult For God (slide)
Can you imagine? Fire falling from Heaven. Impossible, right? Not for God. Nothing is impossible or too difficult for Him.
Maybe you have something you are praying for. Maybe you or someone you know is sick.
You think the sickness is too difficult for God to heal. It’s not. Maybe your family is going through a
hard time right now. There’s not enough money to buy the things you need. You think it’s too hard for
God to provide for your family. It’s not!

Maybe you are all alone and you feel like you have no friends at all. It seems like everyone is against
you and you think it is too difficult for God to help you. Listen to me...NOTHING is too difficult for God.
If He can send fire from Heaven, He can heal your sickness, provide for your family, and heal your broken heart.
So, what happens next in our story? After the fire falls and consumes the sacrifice, the people
began to fall on their knees and cry out, “The Lord, HE IS GOD! The Lord, HE IS GOD!” The prophets
of Baal got so scared that they ran for their lives! (the prophets run out of the room screaming like little
girls) And Elijah showed the world that our God was the one true God! Let’s hear it for Elijah! (Elijah
takes a bow and leaves the stage) And Elijah proved our last point:
3. Our God Is THE God! (slide)
There is no other God that answers prayer. There is no other God that loves us. There is no
other God that is real. There is no other God that sent His only Son to die on a cross to forgive us our
sins. Our God is THE God! The ONE TRUE God!
And, that is the God that loves you today. The prophets of Baal yelled and yelled and danced
and screamed, but their god did not hear them. Why? Because Baal wasn’t real. But, Elijah prayed a
simple prayer to our God and He heard and answered. Why? Because He is REAL! He is THE God!
ALTAR TIME:
(play soft music) Pray with kids who struggle to know that God is real and that
He hears and answers their prayer. Remind the kids that God is the ONE true God and they
can always call on Him when they need help.
