Animals of the rain forests are provided with a variety of habitats in the different layers of the trees. Layers of the forest Emergent layer Harpy eagles, sparrowhawks, pygmy gliders, lesser dawn and lots more. Canopy layer Insects, birds, monkeys, frogs and sloths. Understory layer Insects, bees, stick insects, bullet ants, beetles and butterflies. Forest floor Insects, jaguars, agouti, gorillas, leopards, tigers and lots more. Two-toed sloth Two-toed Sloth: Choloepus Hoffmanni-Central & South America. There are two species of two-toed sloth in S. AmericaHoffman’s (or Unau) found in forested regions of northern S. America from Ecuador to Costa Rica, Linnaeus (Choloepus didattylus) in Brazil. What layer does a sloth habitat on Canopy layer Mountain Gorillas Gorilla gorilla-Central west Africa Gorillas live in the dense forest of tropical Africa where observation of their daily life becomes extremely difficult. Despite recent successfully observations of the mountain gorilla in Zaire, much of their life in the wild remains mystery. Gorillas in spite of their-self eat leaves. No! It is a herbivore. Is a gorilla a carnivore? Dodo Bird The dodo bird disappeared so quickly off the face of the earth, 3000 years ago, that it has become the poster bird for extinction: “as dead as a dodo”. As sudden and swift as the Dodo’s demise was, though, this unfortunate bird holds important lessons for endangered animals that are just barely avoiding extinction in the present day. When was a dodo bird extincted? 3000 years ago Sabre tooth tiger The name sabre tooth tiger is a little bit misleading. This prehistoric mammal has another name and t is called Smilodon. In the olden days, people used to say that there was no sabre tooth because say it was just a legendary. What is another name for a sabre tooth tiger? Smilodon Black rhinos Us humans wanted to kill the rhinos to se it’s horn for medicine. The northern white rhino shows exactly what can happen when poaching is left unchecked. Why do they want the rhinos horn? For medicine Elegant frog Elegant frogs are amphibians by the order Anura The species is often located in Australian rainforests at high elevtions.
