DeSoto Central (4-1) lost to Trezevant, 36-14; Friday vs. Columbus after win over Collierville By John Varlas [email protected] 901-529-2350 With half of the regular season gone, it’s been so far, so good for Dandy Dozen No. 2 Cordova. But the fun is about to begin. The Wolves, who are ranked fifth in the state in 6A, improved to 5-0 with a solid 41-14 victory over host Collierville on Friday. It was arguably their most impressive performance so far but coach Anthony Jones isn’t getting ahead of himself. “I think we’ve got the toughest back-end schedule in the state,” said Jones, referring to Region 4 games yet to come against Germantown, Arlington, White Station, Houston and Whitehaven. “I take my hat off to coach (Mike) O’Neill and Collierville. That’s got to be one of the best game-day atmospheres in Tennessee. That student section was pretty loud. I think Collierville is going to be scary. “We did some things well and some things not so well. ... We’ve still got a lot to work on.” Cordova’s county-best defense, which has given up just 27 points through five games under first-year coordinator Robert Jaques, held Collierville to 197 yards. Shemar Collier had a big play on special teams with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and senior quarterback Devin Coleman ran for a touchdown while completing 18 of 29 passes for 300 yards. “The number I like best is zero,” Jones said. “Zero interceptions. Our offense has played well; that’s been a pleasant surprise. And we’re getting some great senior leadership on defense.” BROTHERS EARN A STATEMENT WIN Coach Thomas McDaniel said when you limit your mistakes, you have a great chance. Even against a team as good as Cincinnati La Salle. Quarterback Keegan Voss ran for two touchdowns, Jacob Bray kicked three field goals and the Brothers (4-1) — tied for third in the Dandy Dozen — avoided the turnovers that have plagued them at times this season to defeat the Lancers, the defending Ohio Division 2 champs, 31-18 on Saturday at Tom Nix Stadium. “We didn’t commit any turnovers on offense and we had very few penalties,” said McDaniel after for 93 yards and the clinching touchdown as the Lynx (4-0) beat the Lions (3-1). Mario Nolan-Dillard ran for 89 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown, for Lausanne. Ty Kimberlin threw scoring passes of 56 and 25 yards to Nick Martin. Cordova senior wide receiver Shemar Collier, who scored on a 95-yard kickoff return, works to break free from a Collierville defender during the first half Friday night at Collierville. beating a team it lost to 4914 last year in Cincinnati. “When you play clean, you stand a chance. I think if you lined us up, we weren’t necessarily the better looking team but that’s the beauty of high school football. Our defense played lights out ... we ran to the ball and broke up passes when we needed to. “And Keegan played very well; he hit the throws he needed to. Our offense did what it needed to do, which was make the game ugly.” Dominick Garrett also had a touchdown run for the Brothers, who host Sheffield on Friday. THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS When Cedric Miller saw the SCIAA schedule for this season, he was delighted. “I told them, ‘we love playing on Thursday nights,’ the MAHS coach said. “It’s not a problem for us. It’s a short week; you practice hard Monday and Tuesday and do a walkthrough Wednesday ... there’s a lot of attention to detail and there’s no time for morale to drop.” Morale is definitely high at MAHS, which improved to 4-1 with last Thursday’s 62-6 win over Region 7-2A rival Martin Luther King Prep. After opening the season with a loss to Brighton on the first Friday, the Lions have won four straight on Thursdays. Miller had plenty of praise for 290-pound lineman Derrick Gainey, tight end Tyrell Partee, tailback Justin Rhodes and defensive back Lazarius Wright, who ranks among the city’s interception leaders. But the star of the show has been Caleb Johnson, a 5-10, 210-pound junior who rushed for 192 yards and four touchdowns against the Rams. Heading into this week’s game against Overton — a rare Friday appearance for MAHS — Johnson has rushed for a county-best 1,124 yards and 17 touchdowns through five games. “He’s already in the top three of the backs I’ve coached,” said Miller, who had successful tenures at Wooddale and Southwind before taking over at MAHS last season. “I can’t say I’m surprised; I saw him in SYS ball when was in the sixth or seventh grade and he was doing the same things then. We just need to stay out of his way and let him do what he does.” IN OTHER GAMES (1) Whitehaven 21, Germantown 14: The Tigers (5-0, 2-0 Region 4-6A) dodged a huge bullet against the upset-minded Red Devils (1-4, 0-2) as Lesley Mosby connected with Ka’Dedrick Richardson on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 58.6 seconds to go. Germantown had tied it at 14 earlier in the quarter on Myles Guyton’s 68-yard pass to Jaylin Williams. Whitehaven’s Kylan Watkins ran for 149 yards and a score. (T3) MUS 29, South Panola 0: Trey Thomas set a school record with five field goals (26, 33, 36, 21, 36) and the Owls (5-0) held the Tigers to just 62 yards. Thomas has 13 field goals, tying the county regular-season record set by Corbin Peeper of Collierville in 2013. Maurice Hampton scored on a 23yard fumble return for the Owls, while intercepting two passes and breaking up two others.
