Parent Corner: Children’s Independence,
I want it, but how do I get it?
Many of you have expressed concerns with how to
increase your children’s independence. At school,
sometimes we see skills that are not seen at home,
but that doesn’t mean that they cannot be seen at
home. The question comes up, “HOW?”
During different stages of our lives we rely on others
for different things. For example, as infants, children
rely on you for nourishment, cleaning, and mobility. As
they grow, they become more independent in these
areas but still depend on you for love, protection,
guidance, and support. As children move toward
adulthood, they become less reliant on you and gain
greater independence overall.
Keeping that in mind, it’s easy to get stuck and not
know how to take the next step between taking care
of it for them and allowing them the trials to learn
how to do it themselves.
Let your children know that you see their efforts,
congratulate them towards small steps to success,
such as finding their shoes before putting them on.
Character Counts-Responsibility
ROY THE RESPONSIBLE RABBIT
This month we will be learning about responsibility and what
that means for preschoolers.
Here are some ideas to teach responsibility: Demonstrating
persistence by keep on trying despite encountering
difficulties, always trying to do your best as a model for your
child, and helping friends and family. Have your child put
their clothes away when laundry is clean and getting their
shoes to put them on when getting ready to leave your home.
