Indian Motorcycles
now available in Minot
W
hen you step into Magic
City Indian Motorcycle,
your senses activate
immediately with the smell of leather
and the sights of shiny new bikes. The
new store, opened this fall, is one of
the newest businesses powered by
Verendrye Electric Cooperative.
Indian Motorcycle has been
around since 1901, but ceased
production in 1977 and resumed in
1998. The Indian Motorcycle lineup
features something for everyone
– from sporty, to classic and even
touring bikes.
For General Manager Bob Hogue,
it’s really difficult to say which one is
the best. That’s because motorcyclists
have a wide range of tastes. Asking a
motorcyclist which bike is the best is
like asking a kid which flavor of ice
cream is the best.
“They’re all different and there’s
a rider for each one of them, so it’s
C2 DE C E M B E R 2 0 1 6 , V EREN DRY E EL ECT RIC N EW S
really hard to say which one is the
best,” Hogue said.
Although the store opened in
September, plans are to have another
event in the spring to get people into
the store to see what it has to offer.
The 7,000-square-foot store employs
five people and carries a variety of
merchandise, from bike accessories
to leather jackets.
“We carry the things people
want,” said Marketing Manager

store in south Minot that is a
member of Verendrye Electric
Cooperative.
Heidi Newburry. “If they have an
Indian Motorcycle, they probably will
want an Indian Motorcycle jacket and
some accessories, too.”
In addition to the Indian
Motorcycle brand, the store also
carries Slingshots and Victory
motorcycles, both brands are also
owned by Polaris. Slingshots are sideby-side, three-wheeled vehicles.
The store is located right off
of U.S. Highway 83 on the south
side of Minot at 6701 Hwy. 83

Although you might not guess it
at first, Wild Bill’s Motorsports has a
lot in common with the Magic City
Indian Motorcycle store. At Wild
Bill’s, you can choose from an array
of toys, ranging from ice houses to
fish and relax in, to sport bikes that
will get your adrenaline pumping.
There’s also a wide assortment of
snowmobiles, watercraft, ATVs, sideby-sides and more.
“The big idea with having boats
and ice houses as well motorcycles,
ATVs and side-by-sides is that we
can keep busy all year and we’re
able to switch gears when we need
to,” said General Manager Devin
Schmaltz.
The store has a lot in common
with the Magic City Indian
Motorcycle store because they
have the same ownership, and
also because the brands overlaps.
Employees engage their customers
with various events. Last year, the
store held a vintage snowmobile
show with more than 100 vintage
snowmobiles on display. The store
has also held avalanche safety
classes for those who bring their
snowmobiles to the mountains. This
year, the vintage snowmobile show
will be sometime in January. Contact
the store for more details.
The store, also powered by
Verendrye Electric, has been at its
current location at 2305 Elk Drive
in Minot since 2014. Its website is
www.wildbillsmotorsports.com and it
also has a Facebook page. n

V
erendrye Electric Co-op
teamed up with two other
cooperatives to donate
$7,500 to the Magic City Discovery
Center to help give children a place
for fun and learning during the
winter months.
Verendrye, Basin Electric Power
Cooperative and CoBank, a
cooperative lender, each pitched in
$2,500 for the Children’s Museum. It
is currently located within the Minot
Airport Museum on north hill in
Minot, but the long-term goal is for
the museum to have its own building.
“Verendrye Electric Cooperative
and our other corporate sponsors are
a big part of the early success of our
temporary Children’s Museum,” said
Board President Jessica Henderson.
“Without such great support for the
discovery center, we simply wouldn’t
be able to provide this indoor fun
over the next five months.”
The check was presented to the
museum by Verendrye Electric
Manager Randy Hauck and
Verendrye board members Karen
Hennessy and Bruce Anderson.
“We’re happy to support this
special place for children and their
families to have fun and learn,” said
Verendrye Manager Randy Hauck.
This is the third season of the
Discovery Center. Featured this
year will be “The Science of an
Amusement Park” exhibit designed
to explore the science behind
traditional amusement park rides
through hands-on activities geared
toward eager minds of all ages.
Admission to this season’s Magic
City Discovery Center is $4/person
($15 maximum per family) with
those 12 months and younger getting
in free. The Magic City Discovery
Center is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Wednesday-Friday, from 10 a.m. to

6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5
p.m. Sunday.
This will be the final season for the
temporary museum, as the Children’s
Museum of Minot board will be
shifting the focus of its nonprofit
organization toward securing a
location for a standalone, larger
museum and fundraising for efforts
to provide the region with a museum
that will stand out in North Dakota
as a premier location to fulfill its
mission: To engage children and
families in the magic of life-long
learning through discovery, creativity
and play.
This year’s museum will have
a full event schedule with special
programming for children of all ages.

Michael Knoop (black shirt) won the 2016 Co-op Challenge, sponsored by Verendrye Electric Cooperative, Town & Country
Credit Union and SRT Communications. The prize was four tickets to a University of North Dakota hockey game and a
$1,000 Visa gift card. Also pictured are Brett Fiddler, business loan officer for Town and Country Credit Union (far right),
Tom Rafferty, member services manager for Verendrye Electric Co-op, and Cassidy Hjelmstad, director of corporate
communications for SRT Communications.

C
ongratulations to Michael
Knoop, of Minot, for
winning the 2016 Co-op
Challenge which was put on by
Verendrye Electric Cooperative,
Town & Country Credit Union
and SRT Communications. He
won four tickets to a University of
North Dakota hockey game and a
$1,000 Visa gift card. He entered the
Co-op Challenge by going online
and answering six questions about
cooperatives during National Co-op
Month in October to be entered into
a drawing.
“I have no luck when it comes to
these kinds of things, but I thought
I would try it anyway,” Knoop said.
“I was excited to get that call saying
I won.” Knoop works for Thomas
Family Funeral Home in Minot.
Before working there, he retired
from a career in law enforcement.
He is also a U.S. Navy veteran. He
loves going to hockey games, and
has even hosted young hockey
players in his home who play for the
Minot Minotauros. He is a member
of two of the contest sponsors,
Verendrye Electric Co-op and SRT
Communications.
The Challenge was held during
October, which is National Co-op
Month. It was a way to educate
people about the presence of
cooperatives in their communities
and teach them more about
cooperative values. A few facts about
cooperatives include:
• There are more than 40,000
cooperative businesses in the
United States with 350 million

members (many people belong
to more than one co-op).
These cooperatives generate
$514 billion in revenue and
more than $25 billion in wages.
Co-ops are not-for-profit
organizations that are
controlled by their members
who can run for positions on
the board of directors.
Cooperatives generate jobs
in their communities, keep
profits local and pay local taxes
to help support community
services.
Cooperatives often take part
in community improvement
programs, ensuring that
everyone has an opportunity
to benefit from the cooperative
experience. n
