With about a month and a half of the school year remaining, we have many events on our calendar, many of which are highlighted in this newsletter. Please note them on your calendars! April 15 Window for JPSN scholarship closes Midterm for Trimester 3 Have a great week! April 21-24 8th Grade Washington DC Trip Mr. Michael Goedde Principal Kremer Grant Any parents who pay tuition to support their child’s education should apply for Kremer Grant scholarship money to help offset their overall tuition costs. The Kremer Foundation will generously provide the school with $10,000 next year to assist families in paying tuition. The amount families receive will entirely depend upon the number of individuals who apply. There are strict financial conditions that applicants must meet in order to be considered for a grant. Applications can be picked up in the school office and must be returned by Friday, May 22nd. Girls on the Run/Heart and Sole Practice Cancelled This Wednesday’s practice has been cancelled, but families are reminded that next Monday, April 18th, our girls and many of their family members will completing a practice 5k run after school on school grounds. Teachers, students, and families are invited to attend. Spring Pictures This Friday, students are permitted to dress out of uniform for Spring Pictures. Page 1 of 6 More Important News Children’s Theater Performance This Friday our K-3 students will be visiting the Children’s Theater; please note that students are permitted to come dressed out of uniform on this day because of Spring Pictures. Washington DC Trip Next Thursday, April 21st, our 8th capital. Parents are reminded to get payment and all necessary paperwork in this week. May Crowning May Crowning is scheduled for May 5 at 7PM in the church; attendance is required. More will be shared about this in future newsletters. There is no school on Friday, May 6th. Graduation Help Eighth Grade Graduation is on Thursday, May 19th. Although parents of 8th graders have volunteered to plan the reception, we need some 7th grade parents to volunteer to work the reception. If interested, please contact the school office. New Meningococcal Immunization Requirement for grades 7 and 12. Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 7th and 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal (serogroups A, C, W, and Y) disease. One (1) dose of meningococcal (serogroups A, C, W, and Y) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal (serogroups A, C, W, and Y) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first (1st) and second (2nd) dose. If the first (1st) dose of meningococcal (serogroups A, C, W, and Y) vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second (2nd) dose is not required. Continue to encourage your child to participate in this, our most important fundraiser of the year! SAINT CECILIA Festival The St. Cecilia Festival is now accepting flea market donations. Collections begin March 6 & 20 and April 3 & 17, 11 AM - 2 PM,at the garage behind the church. Page 2 of 6 St. Cecilia Boosters Scholarship The St. Cecilia Boosters award up to two $500 scholarships to 8th grade students that have participated in sports at St. Cecilia. Scholarship applications and a full list of criteria can be obtained at the Boosters' meeting, which is held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Parish House. The March meeting will be on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. Applications are due to the Booster President at the May Booster meeting. Some of the criteria for the scholarship include: Athlete must attend St. Cecilia School for at least the entire 8th grade year Parent/guardian must have attended at least two Booster meetings during the current school year Family must have fulfilled the required Booster service hours Registration Information Don’t be locked out of a spot! If your child is returning to St. Cecilia next school year, registration needs to be completed. Many students have been shadowing at all grade levels and any open spots are filling quickly! Once full, all students, present and prospective, will be placed on a waiting list. Preschool This week students will finish up a unit on bugs! Last week we studied caterpillars and butterflies, this week we will focus on ladybugs, bees and spiders. We will read The Grouchy Ladybug, Buzz, The Very Busy Spider and The Very Greedy Bee. Through these stories, students will learn about what it means to be a good friend and hard worker. We will also talk about the many ways bugs move around! Students will be introduced to the letter M and continue learning about different number forms (different ways to show numbers such as tally marks, fingers and ten frames) for the number 2. In Religion, students will begin a unit about God Made Little Things. Students will learn that God made small things such as bugs! Students will learn that small things are important and that we should praise God for small things. Kindergarten This week in reading students will be learning the letter Q. Students will learn that Q and u always go together in words. They will learn the sound letter Q makes and how to write capital and lowercase Q. Students will work with the -am family. They will learn how to read and write the follow -am words: jam, ham, swam, clam, ram and yam. Students will read their decodable reader in their small groups. They will be working on fluency while reading. In math students will begin to skip count by 5s. They will also start their shapes unit. Students will start a fun science unit next week. We will be getting a few class pets! Be sure to ask your student what are new pets are and how they are growing!! Grade 1 This week, students will be reading another fairy tale, The Three Little Pigs. Our spelling words will be: about, little, once, upon, their, from. Our spelling pattern will be words that end with -le, such as title, table, puzzle, maple, drizzle, cradle. Students will learn that if the first vowel is short, you count back 3 letters and double that letter. Vocabulary words will be: boasted, brick, haystack, huff, slurped. Our comprehension strategy is sequencing. Our phonics skill will be to identify silent letters in a word. In English, we will identify and write antonyms. In Math, students will complete Chapter 9 on non-standard measurement and telling time to the hour and half hour and take their Chapter 9 test. We will take a field trip on Friday, April 15. Please send in permission slips and $2 so your child can go to Children’s Theater to see Shrek the Musical. www.StCeciliaCinti.org Page 4 of 6 Grade 2 This week students will be working with words that have long I spelled with the patterns -ild, ie, -ind, -y, -igh, and silent e. Students will continue to read Animal Eyes and use the comprehension skill compare and contrast to the different eyes of animals. They will also compare and contrast their eyes with a classmate using as many adjectives as they can. Students will use content vocabulary and create their own sentences. Students will recognize initial s blends in words. In Miss Bruemmer’s Math group, students will continue using analog and digital clocks to tell time to the half hour, five minutes, quarter past, and quarter before. Ms. Musselman’s Math group will continue learning about measuring, but it will be in metric units. In Religion, students will practice receiving Holy Communion. Students will learn a special prayer to say to Jesus in thanksgiving after receiving Holy Communion. Students will hopefully take a tour of the church with Father Jamie and see all of the objects that are used before and during Mass. Please remember to return your child’s permission slip and $2.00 for our field trip to see “Shrek the Musical Jr.” on Friday, April 15 th. Grade 3 Religion – Students will learn more about the disciples and how we are called to follow Jesus. English - Students will review and be quizzed on plural nouns, action and being verbs, commas and quotation marks throughout the week. Reading – The genre is instructional text. The comprehension test for “Aero and Officer Mike” will be on Friday, April 15th. The test will have questions that need a constructive response. Vocabulary - Students will be tested on the following words: ability, patrol, loyal, partners, shift, snap, lying, quiver. The test will be on Thursday, April 14th. Spelling - Students will concentrate on words with ar, or, and ore: horse, mark, storm, market, acorn, artist, March, north, barking, stork, thorn, forest, chore, restore, dark, story, partner, fortune. The test will be on Thursday, April 14th. Science / S. Studies - Students will begin lessons on Health and Safety. Math - Students will continue learning about fractions. Shrek the Musical money and permission slips are due this week. The field trip is Friday, April 15th. Grade 4 Religion – Students will study the meaning of the 4th commandment English - Students will study verbs. Reading - Students will continue to study both Greek myths as well as informational texts. Science – Not Submitted Math (Musselman) - Students will learn the relationship between fractions and decimals. English – Students will look at different text structures. Reading – Students will continue reading “The Giver”. Science – The students will be classifying substances based on their physical and chemical properties. Math (Martin) – The students will continue to work on percents, fractions, and decimals.
