The Gables Welcomes
Six New Residents
The Gables warmly welcomes David and Nancy Bridges, Marge Davis, Sylvia Gallagher, Bill Kitchell
and Arlene Zivitz to our retirement community (we will profile Marge and Bill next quarter):
Sylvia Gallagher
Arlene Zivitz
Background:
Sylvia
was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts,
graduated from the
high school there,
and then went on to
Middlebury College
in Vermont where
she received a B.A. in
Mathematics. Early
on, Sylvia ran a
trucking business for
13 years with her first husband, eventually moving
back to Greenfield in 1963 with her two children
(Andrea and Bob) following her divorce. Sylvia’s
thirty years in education began with her teaching
English and Social Studies at the local junior high
school, and culminated in her position as head of the
English Department in Northfield, MA. Sylvia and
her children became part of a big, blended family
when she married her second husband, Donald. Sylvia relocated to Vermont approximately five years
ago to be closer to family.
Background: Arlene
was born in Brooklyn, New York and
attended Lincoln
High School with
the likes of Neil
Diamond and Neil
Sedaka. After high
school, she attended Brooklyn College, receiving her
B.A. and M.A. degrees in Elementary Education. Arlene taught second grade in Red Hook, and later became an art
teacher. She moved to Florida in 1988 and became
an ESOL teacher for adults (English for Speakers
of Other Languages), eventually moving to North
Carolina where she taught ESOL to migrant farm
workers. Arlene came to Vermont eight years ago
to live closer to family. She is currently sharing
her apartment with her 12-year-old cat, Simon.
Interests: Writing, canoeing (she has canoed most of
the major rivers), traveling, cards, reading.
Interests: Currently taking painting classes, active
volunteer (Paramount Theatre, Community Cupboard, RAVNAH Hospice), Reiki-certified, knitting, hiking, walking, dancing, reading, and music.
In Her Own Words: “For the first time in my life, I can
do anything I want—I have time to read, write, and
participate in activities. I’m surrounded by plenty of
good food, programs, and nice people.”
In Her Own Words: “I tell my friends and family
that I feel like I’m at Club Med—all the services
are included and I don’t need to carry a purse! I’m
very impressed with the residents and staff.”

David & Nancy Bridges
Background: David was born in Chicago, Illinois, attended New Trier
High School, and made his way to Middlebury College where he
received his B.A. in English and Drama. He was a secondary school administrator in Tarrytown, New York for 39 years. Nancy is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, graduated from Westtown Friends School and
Chatham College, and received her B.S./RN degree in Nursing. She
worked at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, and spent 38 years in
nursing. David and Nancy met on a blind date at a restaurant in New
York City, and married within the year. A summer camp in Hampton,
New York eventually became a year-round home for them in 1995. David and Nancy have been married
51 years, have two sons, and four granddaughters.
Interests: David-Volunteering (including President of The Board at Slate Valley Museum for 11 years),
theater, arts, reading, traveling. Nancy-Volunteering (including the museum and library), gardening,
reading, traveling
In Nancy’s Own Words: “We have had such a smooth transition to The Gables—we’re enjoying the
people and the food. It was the right time, and The Gables was the right place!”
