Allows the rear passengers to watch DVDs, look at

on two superb 17.8 cm colour screens, without
disturbing the driver or restricting the rear field of
vision. The system’s separate DVD players mean that

With over 2,500 patents to his name, the prolific inventor Béla Barényi (born 1907)
certainly merited his place in the “Automotive Hall of Fame” in Detroit. Much more
important than this honour, however, is the fact that his developments have saved
countless lives.

revolutionary development. The “Fintail Mercedes”, presented in 1959, was the first vehicle with bodywork which was developed
according to this patent. In 1966 Barényi, together with Chief Development Officer Hans Scherenberg, formulated the distinction
between active safety (driving aspects) and passive safety (occupant protection), which is still applied throughout the car industry.

Many of Barényi’s patents and designs – from the pontoon body to the pagoda roof and the deformable steering column –
revolutionized the world of automotive engineering. Béla Barényi died in Böblingen in 1997. His major contribution to

In the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix the Mercedes-Benz KERS hybrid system powered Lewis Hamilton to the first hybrid victory in
the history of Formula 1. Since the beginning of the 2014 season, turbocharged hybrid engines have been standard in this most
