Central Idea: The way we live can change over time Inquiry Into k Our family histories - what was life like for our family in the past? k Ways we can find out about our history - how can we find out about what life was like long ago? k Similarities and differences between generations how are our parents and grandparents childhoods like ours? how do they compare with our classmates family histories? Key Concepts Form - what was the past like? what are our family histories like? Change - how has life changed for 5-6 year old children over different generations? Students will begin to understand that change is universal and inevitable. Reflection - how do we know that some things have changed and some have stayed the same over time? Students will compare/contrast the past and present . Teacher Questions 1) How can we find out about the past? 2) How have our families' traditions and lifestyles changed over time? Learner Profile Attributes & Attitudes Inquirers - demonstrates natural curiousity, conducts research and shows independence in learning. Vocabulary Guest Speakers *generation *technology *past *present *future *decade *olden days *century We are looking for parents and grandparents to: k tell us stories about their home and school life from when they were young k teach us games they played when they were young k show us artifacts from their childhood (toys, clothes, etc...) *antique *artifact *lifestyle *change *timeline *era *prehistoric *modern Skills Through this unit, students will be exposed to: Research skills - by learning about interviewing, making observations and using primary and secondary sources to collect information. Communication Skills - by listening to a variety of speakers and presenting their understanding. Assessment Assessment during this unit will be based on: k understanding of the Central Idea and enduring understandings k knowledge of content k use of specific vocabulary and skills k demonstration of the assigned Learner Profile attributes How Can You Help At Home? 1. If you think appropriate, share your family tree with your child and help them understand that they come from two different families. 2. Send in artifacts from the past to add to our classroom "museum". We will take good care of them! 3. Go out in the community on an "Old Things vs New Things" Scavenger Hunt. Take photos of things that are old and compare them with things that are new. Send the photos into school please! They will support our class inquiry.
