Year 7 SOSE (History): Ancient China Ancient China Graded Assessment Task You have the choice of tasks for this assessment. You must choose two of the four topics and four of the five activities for each of your chosen topics. Think carefully about what tasks you will do – whatever task you decide on you must conduct research and plan your presentations. You will need to complete a reference list as well as a self assessment and evaluation at the end of your investigation. The Royal Warriors Site 1. Who built this tomb site? Where were the tombs built? What was found in and near these tombs? 2. What does the evidence of this tomb tell us about what life was like in Ancient China? 3. Make a model or a collage or a set of drawings to show the key features of the tomb and its importance to Chinese history. 4. Choose three pieces of music that you think match each of the following; a) The first discovery of the tomb b) The work of archaeologists gradually uncovering the tomb c) The official opening of the tomb by the Chinese government Place the three pieces of music on a tape or CD. At the end of the music explain why you think your choices of music match the three stages of the tomb. 5. Prepare a travel brochure or TV advertisement designed to encourage tourists to visit the tomb. Include details of the tomb and its history, how to get there and why it is such an amazing site to visit. Two Famous Emperors 1. Prepare a chart on each of these famous emperors; Shi Huangdi and Li Bang. Each chart should have the following headings; Emperor, Dates of Ruling China, Important Actions and Events. 2. Why would ruling China be difficult for one person? 3. Decide whether one Emperor was a better ruler than the other by; a) Make a list of the criteria you will use to judge. For example, improving life for farmers and providing education. b) Give each Emperor a mark out of five for each of your criteria. Total the scores c) Decide which Emperor you would have preferred to live under, explain your reasons 4. Which of the two Emperors would be most at home living today? Explain why you think so. 5. Make up a rap, dance, mime or play describing the life and work of one or both emperors. The Great Wall of China 1. Describe the key features of the Great Wall of China. When was it built? How was it built? What is its size and length? 2. Suggest two reasons why you think the wall was built. Which of these reasons is likely to have been the most important? Why? 3. Write a song about the Great Wall of China. Include any key details of the Wall, its reasons for being built, what it achieved and its attractions for tourists. 4. Visit a Great Wall of China website and make a list of “Amazing Facts about the Great Wall of China”. Which two facts do you consider the most important? Why? 5. An Internet magazine wants you to review the Great Wall of China website. Prepare a brief (250 word) but informative review of the site. Describe the site’s main features, comment on its clarity, attractiveness, interest, ease of navigation and the accuracy of the information contained in it. Achievements and Inventions of Ancient China 1. Using your textbook and other sources list and briefly describe eight or more of the inventions and achievements of the ancient Chinese. 2. Which three of these inventions or achievements do you think are most important for us today? Why? 3. Make a comic strip (minimum of five frames) showing one discovery or invention made by the ancient Chinese. Show how its discovery (imagine this!), how it works, and its importance then and now. 4. Devise a trivia quiz of Chinese inventions and discoveries, with question and answer cards. 5. Write a poem or song describing one or more Chinese inventions.
