Saving in Rich Text Format Page 1 of 2 Updated 08/05 Saving a Document in Rich Text Format Students frequently need to send documents to their instructors. At Central Arizona College most instructors use Microsoft Word as their word processor. If a student uses a word processor other than Word, the instructor might experience difficulty opening the document. Rich Text Format (RTF) is a word processing file format which is almost universal. A RTF document can be created in any operating system (Windows or Mac) and can be read on almost every word processor. NOTE: These directions are written using Microsoft Word as the word processor. Saving in Rich Text Format in any other word processor should be a very similar process. Step 1 Type the document in your word processor. Use the margins, text size, and formatting information given by your instructor if necessary. Step 2 Click on “File” on the Menu. Click on “Save As”. Step 3 Click on the arrow at the right of the “Save as type” box and select “Rich Text Format” from the list. Saving in Rich Text Format Page 2 of 2 Step 4 Select a place to store the file. For example – select the “My Documents” folder. Next click on the “Open” button for the folder to open that folder. Step 5 Type in a name for the file and then click “Save”. Do not type in the .rtf at the end of the file name. The word processor will automatically add .rtf. Updated 08/05
