Beechwood News 2016 A free newsletter for residents of Jensen’s communities In honor of Flag Day, here is an interesting story about Stars and Stripes that may surprise you! The current 50-star American flag was designed by 17 year old Robert G. Heft, as a school project in 1958. He got a B-. In an American history class, Bob had to do an out of class project. He could make or do whatever he wanted, like a science fair or something where you bring in your project. The Betsey Ross story intrigued him. His Mom and Dad had a 48 star flag they received as a wedding present that meant a lot to them. Bob took scissors and cut it up. He had never sewn before and since making the flag, has never sewn since. He brought it to school and the teacher asked why he had too many stars. He had added more for the potential new states of Alaska and Hawaii. He was given a grade of B-. Now, a Bwasn't a bad grade, however, a friend of his picked up 5 leaves off the ground, taped them down to a notebook and labeled them and received an A. Bob was upset, so the teacher told him to get it accepted in Washington, come back and he might consider changing his grade. Two years after he made it, and just one year after the 49th star flag was adopted thanks to the addition of Alaska in January, 1959, Heft's 50 star flag was made the official U.S. flag design with Hawaii becoming a U.S. state on August, 1959. Bob received a call from President Eisenhower asking him if he could come to Washington on July 4th, 1960 for the official adoption of the new flag. ( After 21 written letters to the White House and 18 phone calls, congressman Walter H. Moeller, tirelessly promoted it in Washington and was instrumental in getting it accepted.) The primary change made in Heft's design over the previous flag design was simply in the layout of the stars. In Heft's design, he changed the 6 rows of 8 stars (that one year later would become 7 rows of 7 stars), to an arrangement of alternating 5 rows of 6 stars with 4 rows of five stars. While one can see how his teacher would have given him a low grade for such a minor change, Heft felt this would be critical to getting the flag accepted. The thing is to add stars so no one can tell there is a change in the design. In addition to designing the current flag, Heft also designed a 51 star flag, ready to be proposed should the need arise. When he died, December 12, 2009, he gave this 51 star flag to Rep. Clarence Miller of Ohio to submit should a new state be added to the union. If it's eventually accepted, it will make Heft the first person ever to design two U.S. flags His teacher changed his grade to an A. What exactly is a vexillologist? A vexillologist is a flag expert. It’s a relatively new word, coming into use in 1959. According to the North American Vexillological Association, there are currently no degrees offered on the subject. Pres’ Page Well, Bev and I left a cool Spring in Carolina just in time to catch a cool Spring in CT. The last few days though have been just about perfect. So perfect that everything, including the grass, is growing, signaling the beginning of another grass cutting season. The BWRA Board met and graciously allowed time for me to catch-up on all the on-going activities here at Beechwood. There have been seven events sponsored by the board thus far this year. We were fortunate enough to catch the Pizza Party last week and noticed the congeniality and social interaction that was going on. It was great to be there. Sorry that more community residents were not there to enjoy the camaraderie. Our Annual BWRA Membership Drive begins June 1, 2016. For a small fee of $3.00/person/year residents can participate in and enjoy the good time events sponsored by your BWRA board. Just a reminder, to our newer neighbors; your annual fee is prepaid at the time of your closing. So be sure to take advantage of the freebie! The next event, which is free to BWRA members in good standing, will be the Annual Picnic, June 4, 2016 Come join us, enjoy! Check the flyer in this newsletter for details. The Annual Bulk Pick-up Day is on Wednesday June 1, 2016. Several recycle vendors will be picking up different items during the day. If anyone needs a hand to wrestle your materials to the curb-side please call Carl Engelhart @ 828-288-1315 and we will be glad to assist you. Looking ahead, the BWRA board will be scheduling clubhouse events through the end of the year. If anyone has any suggestions, comments etc that you would like to share with the board please do not hesitate to call our Event Coordinator Shirley Kiliany @ 860-452-4530 or me @ 828-288-1315. We would be pleased to hear from you. We have added several new directors to the board. However, we can still use another 3-4 candidates to assist us in carrying out the mission: the betterment of the Beechwood community. If you have an interest in joining the board and sharing your talents, come join us for a meeting. The next board date is June 13, 2016 @ 6:30PM @ the clubhouse. Our last Community meeting before Summer sets in is Tuesday June 14, 2016 @ 7:00PM. As usual there will be delicious desserts and fellowship. Our very own Director John Hozjan will be speaking on “Outsource-outreach”. See you there! At the beginning of this page we spoke about growing. BWRA also needs to grow: members, directors, events & event participation, volunteers, community services. Come, step-up and join us. We look forward to seeing you. Carl Engelhart~BWRA ~1Jun16 828-288-1315 It's that time of year again. The Beechwood Club Membership Drive will begin June 1st. This is payable before September 7, 2016. Lets get out, exercise and play! Pool is open See ya there too! ** Something to think about..... I grew up with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked with it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen before they had a name for it. A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dishtowel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing and renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more. Then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away, never to return. So while we have it, it's best we love it and care for it and fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for marriage and old cars and children with bad report cards and dogs with bad hips and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. A best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special... so we keep them...close. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ed & Rae Patrick are hosting a Musical Celebration of Summer June 16 at 3:00 pm at their home 10 Stonewall Drive There will be piano music, solo, a sing-along and stories to celebrate the season. This number does not include the Palestine or the Vatican/Holy See (who act as non-member observers), Taiwan (whose credentials have at large been rejected by the UN since 1971), or Kosovo (which is not a UN member, but does participate actively in actions of the UN’s International Monetary Fund and World Bank). The US State Department recognizes 195 independent countries around the world, but that list of countries reflects the political agenda of the United States of America. For example, it includes Kosovo, but does not officially include Taiwan, as China claims that Taiwan (the ROC) is simply a province of China. What about Greenland? In a nation-wide referendum, the people voted in favor of increased self-rule in November 2008 by an overwhelming majority vote. With the referendum, Greenland acquired complete responsibility for its own internal affairs in June 2009. Denmark, however, continues to exercise control of Greenland's foreign affairs, security, and financial policy in consultation with Greenland's Home Rule Government, and the Danish monarch still accepted as a head of state. In that regard, Greenland is still a part of Denmark, and not recognized as an official independent country. Geopolitical factors are by and large why defining an official number of independent countries around the globe is such an arduous task. Game Night 25 Mary Ellen Mariano Memorial This is a great time of the year to begin that project you have been planning during the winter. Weather is less of a factor and the spring just seems like a great time to get started making some changes, repairs, and improvements. Projects may include, but are not limited to the following: painting, planting, carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, sunrooms, awnings, satellite dishes, etc. Please remember, the way to start any project or make a change to your home or utility building is to fill out and send us a completed Resident Request Form or written letter or email us at [email protected]. Once we receive your written request you will be contacted by a Jensen’s representative for a review and discussion of your plans. When your project is approved, you will receive a written letter to that effect and you may begin. REMINDER – If you do not first request Jensen’s approval for your project, you may be required to discontinue or even remove any work that has been started. Also, under no circumstances should you be digging on your home site without first consulting your Jensen’s representative. Additionally, all outside contractors working in a Jensen Community are required to use OSHA required personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper fall protection while working on your home. Mini-Satellite Dishes (MSD’s) are often installed without receiving Jensen’s prior written permission. MSD’s may be installed with the following criteria: 1. A MSD may be installed ONLY the side or roof of a house, a wooden utility building, or another suitable location as approved by a Jensen manager and be as inconspicuous as possible. 2. A MSD may be installed to a height NO higher than if the actual unit was installed on the peak of the house roof. 3. A MSD must be installed to the manufacturer’s specifications, and any permits required by the town or county must be obtained by the resident. 4. Only one installed MSD is permitted. If a second MSD is necessary, it must be approved by Jensen’s. A review of Appendix C of your Rental Agreement will provide answers to many of your questions about projects and the proper process to follow. If you need assistance, we are willing to help wherever possible. Just call the office and ask to speak to your Area Supervisor.
