Elicit what countries they are in and a few facts about each one. Then ask the class what they know about Christmas customs in each country / city. Show them the following pictures and let them guess which city it is. Can they guess the name of the city in picture 5? Topic Focus: Traditions in English-speaking countries, Christmas Vocabulary Focus: Christmas This lesson plan is based on the article, Christmas Comes to Town on pages 4–5 of the magazine. Liam Peach (UK) 2 Reading for specific information, writing ( 10 mins) 1 Put the students into four groups and give each group a city. Tell them to read about their city in the article and fill in the column in the table on p. 5 that relates to that city. 3 Speaking, writing ( 15 mins) 2 1 Now put the students into groups of four, each containing one student from each of the previous four groups. Tell the students to present to the group what they learnt about their city while the other three students fill in their table. 2 4 Check answers, follow up ( 10 mins) 3 Return the students to their original places and go through the table as a class, reviewing the answers. Take a vote to see which place would be the most popular Christmas destination.
