factory in m a m cases, b e c a u s e o f the v a r y i n g c o n t o u r o f the soles o f l a d i e s
shoes.
At first,
s h o e s o f v a r y i n g heel
heights f r o m a s i n g l e
manufacturer
w e r e e x a m i n e d . T h e r e w a s a definite i n d i c a t i o n o f c o r r e l a t i o n o f heel heights.
H o w e v e r , when shoes o f other manufacturers
w e r e to be f i l l e d , at times dis­
crepancies appeared.
A b o u t 2 5 0 ladies' high-heeled shoes were p r o c u r e d , from a wide number
of m a n u f a c t u r e r s ,
w i t h all the v a r i o u s h e e l h e i g h t s a v a i l a b l e , a n d , o f c o u r s e ,
in the full r a n g e o f sizes n o r m a l l y s o l d t o l a d i e s .
In the e x a m i n a t i o n o f this n u m b e r o f s h o e s , it was f o u n d that different
m a n u f a c t u r e r s m i g h t use three different a r c h angles f o r the s a m e heel height.
This meant that a w i d e v a r i e t y o f s o l e c o n t o u r s e x i s t e d , as is s h o w n in F i g u r e
1. O n this c h a r t a r e s h o w n the sole c o n t o u r s for several s h o e s , all o f w h i c h
had the s a m e heel height.

h e e l e d s h o e s , as is n o w d o n e with the m a l e s h o e s .
The
m e a s u r i n g o f the a r c h a n g l e o f the v a r i o u s s h o e s indicated
that if
female S A C H Feet w e r e m a d e with keel a n g l e s o f 3 0 , 40, 5 0 a n d 6 0 ° , o n e of
t h e m c o u l d s a t i s f a c t o r i l y fit a n y ladies s h o e w e h a d e x a m i n e d .
This
means
that the a r c h a n g l e o f the s h o e is the o n e f a c t o r that d e t e r m i n e s the selection
of the S A C H F o o t t o h e used.
It then b e c a m e a p p a r e n t that an e a s y m e t h o d for determining the a r c h
a n g l e o f the s h o e w a s n e e d e d .
