ABSTRACT HIGH LATITUDE IONOSPHERIC SCINTILLATION CHARACTERIZATION by Yu Jiao This thesis presents statistical analysis of arctic auroral oval ionospheric scintillation events during the current solar maximum based on high-rate GPS data collected in Gakona, Alaska from August 2010 to March 2013. The objective is to better understand the climatology and morphology of ionospheric scintillation in high latitude regions. Two sets of scintillation event filters, multipath identification procedures, and other processes are applied to exclude non-scintillation related signal intensity and phase fluctuation and to extract scintillation events from over 657 days of available data. A total of about 5800 and 3000 scintillation events were identified after applying the low and high thresholds respectively, most of which are phase scintillations. Based on the occurrence time, signal direction of arrival, intensity, and duration of these scintillation events and the solar and geomagnetic activities associated with these events, diurnal, seasonal, spatial, and solar activity dependencies are derived and presented in the thesis. The characterization of high latitude scintillation will provide insights into the mechanisms responsible for the generation of the scintillation, lead to a better understanding of the solar-terrestrial atmospheric relationships, and help development of robust GNSS receivers that can withstand scintillation effects. When electron density irregularities occurred in the ionosphere radio waves propagating through the media may be affected, in which case amplitude and phase fluctuations will be observed at the receiver (Yeh and Liu, 1982). Ionospheric scintillation is mainly observed at the equatorial area defined by the magnetic latitude around -15° and +15°, the auroral oval and polar cap at high latitude which are shown in Figure 1. 1 (Skone et al., 2001). In the equatorial region, the strongest levels of scintillation can be observed especially during the post-sunset period as well as around equinoxes (spring and autumn) (Beniguel et al., 2009). Usually, both amplitude and phase scintillation can be detected in the same event. Inside the auroral oval and near the polar cap, scintillation are usually moderate and phase scintillation events occur more frequently than amplitude ones (Aquino et al., 2005). Inside the auroral oval scintillation is usually a nighttime phenomenon with the maximum shown in winter, while at polar cap scintillation exists at all local time and is location-dependent (Li et al., 2010). The data analyzed in this study are collected using a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver array located in HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) Alaska which is located within the 50% auroral zone as is shown in the red circle in Figure 1. 1. The ionosphere irregularities occurrence is highly correlated with solar activity. During solar minimum years scintillation magnitudes and frequency of occurrence decrease drastically as the background ionosphere activities subside (Ngwira et al., 2010; Prikryl et 1 al., 2010). During solar maximum, we expect a considerable increase in both event number and intensity. In this thesis, we will present experimental evidence on the distributions of the GNSS signal scintillations and their daily, seasonal, and solar activity dependency. Figure 1. 1 Ionosphere scintillation data collection sites at high latitude and equatorial locations (taken from Morton, 2013). 1.2 Geomagnetic Field and Ionosphere Scintillation Geomagnetic field is the Earth’s main magnetic field whose form is largely subject to the Earth’s inner core and solar activity. The field can be represented in XYZ coordinates, which are three orthogonal directions with positive values for geographic northward (X), eastward (Y), and vertical into the Earth (Z). Another popular set of coordinates for geomagnetic field consists of the horizontal magnitude (H), the eastward 2 Figure 1. 2 Components of geomagnetic field angular direction of the horizontal component from geographic northward (D), and the downward component (Z). Figure 1. 2 illustrates the components of the geomagnetic field, and the conversion equations are shown in (1.1): X = E cos(Dº), Y = H sin (Dº) ( 1. 1 ) On occasion, the declination angle Dº in degrees is expressed in magnetic eastward directed field strength D (nT), which can be obtained from the relationship (Campbell, 2003): D(nT) = H tan(Dº) ( 1. 2 ) Scintillation occurrence and intensity are highly correlated with geomagnetic field and solar activity (Rodrigues et al., 2004, Aquino et al. 2005). At the equatorial region and during the day time, the rising ionospheric plasma which is heated by the Sun falls down magnetic field lines to higher latitudes, creating anomalies in the ionosphere that disturb GPS signals. After sunset the horizontal magnetic field at the equator holds the ionospheric plasma up leading to formation of bubbles in about an hour after sunset. During magnetic storms the occurrence of bubbles is suppressed before local midnight but enhanced after local midnight (Kintner, 2006). At high latitudes, the eastward electric field in the dayside auroral oval directs a "tongue of ionization" from the subauroral region into the polar cap (Aarons, 1998). Energetic electrons are accelerated along terrestrial magnetic field lines and precipitate at approximately 110 km altitude resulting in enhanced ionization, optical and UV emissions, and formation of ionospheric irregularities which can lead to scintillation effects (Basu et al., 1998; Valladares et al., 2002). 1.3 Ionospheric Scintillation Indices The widely used parameters to measure ionospheric scintillation activity are the S4 index and σφ index, for amplitude and phase scintillation respectively. S4 is the standard deviation of the received signal power normalized to the average signal power which is 3 given in equation ( 1. 3 )(Briggs and Parkin, 1963). σφ is the standard deviation of the signal phase (Yeh and Liu, 1982). S4 = I2 − I I σφ = 2 φ2 2 ( 1. 3 ) ( 1. 4 ) where <> represents the average value over the interval of interest which is traditionally taken as 60s period, I is the detrended signal intensity and φ is the detrended carrier phase (Van Dierendonck et al., 1993). As a normalized index, S4 typically falls into the range of 0 to 1, with values greater than 0.5 defined as strong scintillations. The range of φ is defined by the receiver’s carrier tracking pull-in range. For scintillations that resulted in phase fluctuations beyond such range, the receiver has a high probability of losing lock of the signal. At that point, the value of φ carries no significance. Before calculating the values of these two indices, the measurements acquired from the receiver must be detrended to remove the slowly varying receiver clock, satellite dynamics and low-frequency multipath. The prevalent method is to conduct a 6-order Butterworth filter with a 0.1 Hz cut-off frequency (Van Dierendonck et al., 1993). However, the effectiveness of this method has long been questioned (Forte and Radicella, 2002; Beach, 2006) and a new cutoff frequency for high latitude scintillation is set to 0.05Hz (Niu et al., 2012a, 2012b, 2012c). We will discuss this issue in more detail in Chapter 4. 1.4 HighLatitude Scintillation and Impact on Global Positioning System (GPS) Previous researches have shown that high latitude scintillation is characterized by mild amplitude scintillation and strong phase scintillation (Aquino et al., 2005). The strong 4 phase scintillation can cause degradation of positioning accuracy and may even lead to loss of lock of GNSS signals. Carrier tracking loop of GNSS signals is the fragile component of GNSS receiver signal processing and is more seriously impacted by scintillation than the code tracking loop because of the much shorter wavelength of the carrier. In addition the narrower bandwidth of the code tracking loop improves its immunity to amplitude scintillation (Knight et al., 1997). However, as carrier aiding of the code tracking loop is performed in GPS receivers, it can be assumed that loss of carrier lock is shortly followed by loss of code lock (Knight and Finn, 1998). In our experimental data analysis, the occurrence of S4 over 0.5 is rare in Alaska. Cycle slips and loss of lock due to severe amplitude scintillation are scarce, whereas phase scintillation or a combination of phase and amplitude scintillation poses a real threat. Cycle slips and loss of lock are frequently detected even when the σφ index is only about 10 degrees (0.17 radiant). The legacy L2 P(Y) signal is more susceptible to loss-of-lock. This is because the L2 P(Y) tracking is based on the semi-codeless tracking due to the unknown protected code. Semicodeless tracking results in higher noise levels and hence lower signal to noise ratio, which impacts signal tracking during scintillation. Additionally, both L2 signal amplitude and phase scintillation are affected more adversely by the irregularities due to inverse frequency scaling relationship of scintillation (Rino, 1979a, 1979b). For this last reason, L5 signal with even lower frequency will be influenced more by ionospheric scintillation. It should be noted here that the new GPS civilian L2C and L5 signals both carry a dataless channel which can be tracked using four-quadrant discriminators with twice of that of the traditional data-bearing channel’s carrier phase pull-in range. This leads to a larger phase error tolerance range and more robust performance during phase scintillation. The data analyzed in this thesis comes from a GSV 4004B receiver which tracks the GPS L1 and uses the L1 signal to aid L2 P(Y) code tracking. The L2C and L5 signals are not available on this receiver. 5 When a L2 signal loses lock, dual frequency ionosphere delay correction is unavailable and the receiver will have degraded position solution accuracy. When the number of satellites that remain locked is less than 4, a GNSS receiver will not be able to generate position solutions. Ionospheric scintillation also has a big influence on differential GPS (DGPS) which relies on the spatial correlation between reference and user stations. The error induced by ionosphere at the reference is assumed to be the same as that at the user. However at the presence of the ionosphere irregularities, fast TEC (total electron content) changes and hence spatial decorrelation may occur, which leads to errors in DGPS positioning consequently (Moore et al., 2002). Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) can also be affected by ionospheric scintillation in a similar way (Skone and Knudsen, 2000; Klobuchar, 2002). 1.5 Previous Researches on Scintillation Characterization Monitoring and modeling of ionospheric scintillation has been an active research area for over half of a century. Two general approaches in the area are physics-based modeling of the signal wave propagation through the ionospheric irregularities (Booker et al., 1950; Ratcliffe, 1956; Briggs, 1975; Rino, 1979a, 1979b; Secan et al., 1995, 1997; Knight, 2000; Dyrud et al., 2006; Wernik et al., 2007; Beniguel et al., 2009; Carrano et al., 2012; De Oliveira Moraes et al., 2012; Ghafoori, 2012) and data-driven statistical analysis of the climatology and morphology of scintillation from ground-based and satellite-based measurements (Aarons, 1982; Pi et al., 1997; Pullen et al., 1998; Basu et al., 2002; Kintner et al., 2004; Smith et al., 2008; Humphreys et al., 2010; Morrison, 2010; Prikryl et al., 2011; Liu et al., 2013). While physical model-based approach has provided important understandings of causes and effects of scintillation phenomena, data-driven statistical studies of scintillating radio signals behavior have helped to paint a more comprehensive picture of occurrence and extent of scintillation activities on a global scale. Much of previous research regarding the scintillation climatology has been conducted at the equatorial region where the strongest levels of scintillation can be observed. These 6 results ascertain that most low-latitude ionospheric scintillations and irregularities are observed between the post-sunset and pre-midnight period (Basu et al., 2002; Cervera and Thomas, 2006; Su et al., 2006; Li et al., 2007). Typically, both amplitude and phase scintillation can be detected in the same event. A seasonal dependency has also been discovered as more scintillation events occurred around equinoxes (spring and autumn) (Aarons, 1982; Beniguel et al., 2009). Contrary to scintillation at low-latitude, scintillation observed at high-latitude region is generally moderate and phase scintillation is more frequent and intense than amplitude scintillation (Aarons, 1997; Skone et al., 2008; Azeem et al., 2013). Inside the auroral oval scintillation is usually a nighttime phenomenon while at polar cap scintillation exists at all local time (Rino et al., 1983). In recent years, many research findings have been reported based on data collected in Northern Europe and auroral/polar areas (Kersley et al., 1988, 1995; Gola et al., 1992; Bishop et al., 1994; Nichols, 1999; Mitchell et al., 2005; Aquino et al., 2005; De Franceschi et al., 2008; Meggs et al., 2008; Li et al., 2010; Alfonsi et al., 2011; Garner et al., 2011; Deshpande et al., 2012; Kinrade et al., 2012). Cumulative frequency of occurrence of phase and amplitude scintillations as well as distributions of TEC changes (dTEC) obtained from stations in Europe were given by Rodrigues et al. (2004). The results indicated a correlation between scintillation and magnetic field activity index Kp. A strong influence of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) on ionospheric irregularity formation and movement was reported by De Franceschi et al. (2006). High latitude scintillation characteristics at solar minimum were presented by Li et al. (2010), Ngwira et al. (2010), and Prikryl et al. (2010) based on data obtained from stations in Arctic and Antarctic regions. The seasonal pattern of occurrence showed a winter maximum while the diurnal pattern was location-dependent. A more comprehensive analysis on bipolar scintillation climatology at solar minimum was recently published by Alfonsi et al. (2011) in which the influences of location, season and geomagnetic field were provided in detail. 7 1.6 Contributions of Thesis Research The objective of my research for this graduate thesis is processing and analyzing the data collected by our GNSS receiver system located in Alaska from August 2010 to March 2013. Based on the data several tasks stated below have been completed: Scintillation event lists based on the requested thresholds and cutoff frequency were built from which non-scintillation events were carefully excluded. Several ionospheric scintillation distributions under different thresholds and cutoff frequencies were obtained, including scintillation indices magnitude distributions, event duration distributions, and events frequency diurnal, seasonal, and spatial dependency. Results obtained from different thresholds and cutoff frequencies were compared and analyzed. Correlation between scintillation and solar activity as well as geomagnetic field activity was observed and discussed. 1.7 Overview This thesis contains six main parts, starting with the introduction of background knowledge of ionospheric scintillations in this chapter. The data collection system setup and methodology used in the data processing and analysis are described in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 focuses on results obtained from different thresholds, while Chapter 4 compares result on different detrending filter cutoff frequencies. Chapter 5 discusses the correlation between scintillation and geomagnetic field. Chapter 6 closes the thesis with conclusions and summaries. 8 Chapter 2 System and Methodology 2.1 Data Collection System Setup The work presented in this thesis is based on data collected from a high latitude GNSS receiver array located at Gakona, Alaska (62.39°N latitude and 145.15°W longitude), as shown on Figure 2. 1. This is the home of the HAARP facility which is within the auroral zone. Figure 2. 2 shows the receiver array configuration before the upgrade in the beginning of August 2012. About 70% of the data analyzed in this study was collected during this period. A software radio front-end, built by Ohio University Avionics Engineering Center, was used to collect narrowband GPS L1 and L2 IF data (Gunawardena et al., 2008). Two USRP2 radio front ends by Ettus Research were configured to collect wideband GPS L5 and GLONASS L2 and L2 IF data (Peng and Morton, 2010). Two commercial NovAtel OEMV3 receivers provided additional measurements for plasma drift calculations (Wang et al., 2012). A GPS ionospheric scintillation and TEC monitor (GISTM) GSV4004B scintillation receiver by AJ Systems (Van Dierendonck et al., 1993, 1996, 2004) was used to record scintillation data and generate outputs for scintillation event trigger. Only data recorded by the AJ GSV 4004B receiver will be presented in this paper. This receiver, modified from EuroPak-3M, can track up to 10 GPS satellites at the L1 and L2 frequencies. It generates 50Hz phase and Figure 2. 1 Receiver position on map Figure 2. 2 Experiment setup at HAARP, AK before August 2012 9 amplitude measurements on L1. While on L2, only semi-codeless P code measurements are given. In August 2012, several new antennas and receivers were added to the system. The new configuration is shown in Figure 2. 3 in which the GSV 4004B receiver has been moved approximately 4 km south of its original place. The main impact of relocating the receiver is the change in multipath environment. The multipath effects are removed from the scintillation measurements largely by the thresholds discussed later. Figure 2. 3 Experiment setup at HAARP, AK since August 2012 2.2 Scintillation Thresholds and Example The two indices of scintillation, S4 and σφ are computed using equations ( 1. 3 ) and ( 1. 4 ). A 6th order low-pass Butterworth filter was used for L1 signal intensity measurements (Van Dierendonck et al., 1993) and three cascaded 2nd order high-pass Butterworth filters were applied to L1 carrier phase measurements. The cutoff frequency for the filters was set to 0.1 Hz and 0.05 Hz in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 respectively. The observation interval used in this study was 10 seconds, so that every 500 sampling points were averaged to one S4 and σφ value. This interval was chosen to create a balance between noise performance and retention of high-frequency scintillation features. 10 In order to extract scintillation events from the raw data collected by the receiver, several criteria have been set up based on evaluation of non-scintillation events and baseline indicators. A detailed discussion on the selection of the criteria can be found in Taylor et al. (2012). A brief summary is presented below: a) Only events with elevation angles above 30° are considered in order to minimize potential multipath effects. b) Two sets of S4 andσφ thresholds have been applied: the higher thresholds correspond to S4 ≥ 0.15 and σφ ≥ 15° (or 0.26 rad), while the lower ones are S4 ≥ 0.12 and σφ ≥ 6° (or 0.1 rad). Both S4 and σφ are calculated using measurements on L1 only and either index passing the threshold marks a potential event. The high σφ threshold value is selected to reflect the impact on GNSS receiver carrier tracking loop performance, while the conservative low thresholds were chosen to record weak scintillation events which are good indicators of ionospheric irregularity occurrence and plasma drift. c) The index values have to remain above the threshold value for a minimum of 30 seconds to qualify as a scintillation event as most interference cases last no more than 30 seconds (section 2.3.3). d) An event detected within 5 minutes of the onset of another event trigger is not counted as an additional scintillation event. In this case, the two nearly concurrent events are counted as one event. e) If multiple PRNs are experiencing scintillations simultaneously, each PRN’s scintillation is treated as a separate event. f) Attempts have been made to reduce the carrier phase measurement gap resulting from temporary loss of lock of carrier signals. All cycle slip and loss of lock events are extracted and analyzed to determine whether they are the result of real scintillation or due to other factors such as interference, signal blockage, or anomalies of satellite transmission. 11 Figure 2. 4 Example of strong ionospheric scintillation event on May 7 2011 Figure 2. 4 shows a set of subplots for a strong scintillation event observed on PRN 20 on May 7, 2011. The starting time of the plot is 22:57:19 UTC. O1 and O2 in the first row are two observables for estimating the approximate numbers of cycle slips at L1 and L2 which will be explained in detail in section 2.3.2. L1ADR and L2ADR are raw L1 and L2 phase measurements. From the plot, we can see that the scintillation event occurred at about 16 minutes after the starting time and lasted more than 15 minutes. The elevation of PRN 20 when scintillation happened was very high (around 75°), which can almost exclude the possibility of multipath. The maximum value of S4 index reached more than 0.8. σφ index also fluctuated almost simultaneously with S4 index. However the maximum σφ is only slightly above 9 degrees (~0.16 rad). During the event, the C/N0 values of L1 and L2 both experienced deep fading. While L1 PLL appears to maintained lock of the signal, L2 lost lock several times during the scintillation event. 12 2.3 NonScintillation Events Exclusion As we mentioned before, a lot of events that trigger the recording system may not be real ionospheric scintillation. Due to the complexity and varieties of non-scintillation events building a good model to eliminate them from the list right now is impractical thus several semi-manual methods have to be applied to rule them out. There are three main sources of non-scintillation events that may trigger the system – multipath, cycle slip or loss of lock caused by signal anomaly, and interference. Other sources can also lead to scintillation-like behavior occasionally. 2.3.1 Multipath According to Taylor et al. (2012), the criteria we set can exclude most multipath while some strong multipath may still be included in the scintillation events. We can exploit the difference between multipath and scintillation to identify and exclude multipath. An important property of GPS multipath is its repeatability which is illustrated in Axelrad et al. (2005). This is especially true for the receiver measurements used in this study as the receiver is stationary and the surrounding environment usually does not change very quickly, while GPS satellites paths repeats themselves from day to day. There is a time shift due to the difference between a solar day and a sidereal day (23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds) which is twice the satellite orbital period. Thus generally speaking the difference should be around 236 seconds. Although Axelrad et al. (2005) has made a correction to it, 244 seconds in average, we can assume the shift is about 4 minutes roughly. 13 Figure 2. 5 is a very good example consisting of several instances of repetitive multipath which is also provided in one of our previous papers (Taylor et al., 2012). At least four instances of repetitive multipath (circled in the graph) can be observed while a four minutes forward-shifting is obvious. All these instances of multipath occurred in five consecutive days. In fact, all of them lasted more than five days judging from the data analyzed and some of them even continued for 3 weeks before final disappearance led by an accumulative change in the signal incidence angle or a change in surrounding environment. 0.1 4 0.05 2 0 0.1 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 0 10.5 4 0.05 0 0.1 2 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 0 10.5 4 0.05 0 0.1 2 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 0 10.5 4 0.05 0 0.1 2 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 0 10.5 4 0.05 0 7.5 2 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 10.5 0 11 Figure 2. 5 S4 and σφ for PRN 27 from 02/27-03/02/2011 (taken from Taylor et al, 2012) Multipath may change shapes like the one on the very right, show up in only one day or absent itself from the scene suddenly and reappear the next day. The reasons are comprehensive but one of them could be a sudden change in the surroundings like a nearby parked car has left the site. Fortunately this case is not often and we have other 14 features to distinguish multipath like the high correlation between S4 and σφ indices which can also be observed Figure 2. 5. In addition, variations in the code/carrier divergence which is the measured difference between group delay and carrier phase advance, can also be used to verify the existence of multipath (Van Dierendonck et al., 1993, 1996). 2.3.2 Cycle Slips and Loss of Lock Cycles slips and loss of lock are caused by large fluctuations of received signal which are the results of ionospheric scintillation, interference, and other causes. In this research, we are only interested in events caused by scintillations. The O1 and O2 observables mentioned in section 2.2 are one of the indicators employed to reveal the existence of cycle slips. They are calculated directly from the time difference of pseudorange and carrier phase measurements at L1 and L2: Oi = [( ρi (t ) − ρi (t − 1)) − (φi (t ) − φi (t − 1))] / λi (i = 1, 2) ( 2. 1 ) where ρi, φi and λi represent pseudorange, carrier phase measurements, and signal wavelength in meters at L1 or L2 respectively (i=1: L1; i=2: L2). These measurements can be explicitly written as (Misra and Enge, 2006): ρ (t ) = r (t ) + I ρ (t ) + Tρ (t ) + c(δ tu − δ t s ) + ε ρ (t ) ( 2. 2 ) φ (t ) = r (t ) + Iφ (t ) + Tφ (t ) + c(δ tu − δ t s ) + ε φ (t ) + λ N (t ) ( 2. 3 ) Since true range r, ionosphere delay I (opposite in sign for code and phase), troposphere delay T and clock error are either the same between pseudorange and carrier phase measurements or can be considered constant during a very short period (0.02 s) (the decorrelation is about 1s for a DLL with 1Hz bandwidth), after applying ( 2. 2 ) and ( 2. 3 ) to ( 2. 1 ) we can obtain the following representation of O1 and O2 in which subscriptions are omitted for brevity: O = [ε ρ (t ) − ε ρ (t − 1) − ε φ (t ) + ε φ (t − 1) − λ N (t ) + λ N (t − 1)] / λ = ε ρ ,φ (t , t − 1) / λ − N (t , t − 1) ( 2. 4 ) Therefore O1 and O2 is directly related to the difference of integer ambiguities at time t and t-1, which should vary around zero (as in Figure 2. 4). However as the observables 15 have been largely contaminated by noise, a more accurate cycle slip detection and correction algorithm need to be implemented. The method chosen in this research is described in Liu (2011) in which combinations of Melbourne-Wübbena Wide-Lane (MWWL) and TEC rate equations are solved to determine the number of cycle slips. Note that it is necessary to first obtain pseudorange and carrier phase estimations when loss of lock lasted a relatively long period because under this circumstance both pseudorange and carrier phase measurements will be recorded 0 in the GSV4004B receiver, thus no cycle slips can be detected as N remains 0. All cycle slips and loss of lock events will be marked as scintillation events at first. Nonetheless some of them are caused by other signal anomalies besides scintillation. The most common case involves much larger jumps on L1 (e.g. 105 cycles) than those on L2 (usually no more than 50 cycles) at a certain epoch, which is abnormal since scintillation impact on L1 is less than that on L2. More than 95% of this type of anomalies occurred to PRN 21 and a few to PRN 4. These events are excluded from the scintillation event list and as they are more likely due to satellite signal anomaly rather than ionospheric irregularities. 2.3.3 Interference Interference is usually caused by disturbance in the environment close to the receiver antenna such as surveillance radar, satellite phones, or an aircraft flying over the line-ofsight signal path. Cases of interference are often observed as large and abrupt spikes on scintillation indices on all satellites. The corresponding received power may either rise or drop suddenly. 16 S4 & σφ L1 & L2 C/N0 Time (min) Time (min) PRN2 20 30 0.5 5 0 0.4 0 20 0.2 10 S4 PRN4 0 40 10 10 20 30 45 35 25 50 σφ (º) S4 10 σφ (º) 1 0 46 42 38 0 0.4 0 10 0.2 5 0 0.15 0 4 PRN20 S4 0.1 3 0.05 2 44 0 0.4 1 4 40 0.2 2 PRN31 S4 0 0.3 0 6 S4 0.2 4 0.1 2 σφ (º) 44 36 σφ (º) 52 48 54 σφ (º) PRN23 S4 50 46 42 48 σφ (º) PRN13 52 0 0 330o 300o PRN 2 North 0o 30o 45o 44 40 30o 60o 60o PRN 4 75o PRN 31 270o 90o East PRN 13 PRN 23 240o PRN 20 210o 180o 120o 150o Figure 2. 6 Interference example on March 7 2013 starting at 22:00:00 UTC with sky plot 17 40 Figure 2. 6 is an interference example observed on March 7, 2013 starting at 22:12:00 UTC and lasted about 30 seconds. Huge spikes on both scintillation indices especially the S4 index were observed on all visible satellites at the time, and the plot only shows six most obvious ones. The right panel provides the L1 (blue) and L2 (green) carrier to noise (C/N0) ratio. During the interference, the C/N0 on both bands plunged and recovered quickly. In order to show that the event is not caused by ionospheric scintillation, Figure 2. 6 also includes the sky view, in which the red markers mark the locations of the six satellites when the interference occurred. Because the six locations were scattered over a large range of elevation and azimuth angles, it is very likely that the disturbance in the signals were a result of non-scintillation factors. Similar cases of interference were also observed on other days. Close scrutiny found out that most of them lasted no more than 30 seconds, which means they can be excluded by the threshold c) setup earlier. 2.3.4 Other NonScintillation Events Other than the three main sources described above, other sources may also lead to sudden changes of scintillation index values. One example is the clock adjustment of the receiver. Events that look like cycle slips are observed every few days on both L1 and L2 measurements for every satellite. The reason was found to be that the CLOCKADJUST function in the receiver had been disabled resulting in the range measurement bias errors continuously accumulating with clock drift. If the range bias reaches ±250 milliseconds, the time will be adjusted to within ±1 microsecond (OEM4 family user mannual, 2004). Although the interval between such events is not fixed (usually four to five days, occasionally even twice a day), this type of events is highly recognizable because it happens simultaneously to all visible satellites with a certain range of cycles slipped, so that they can be removed easily. 18 Chapter 3 Scintillation Characterization on Different Thresholds 3.1 Effective Data The data analyzed in this thesis were collected by the GSV4004B scintillation receiver in Alaska from August 2010 to March 2013. Occasional system outages due to hardware, software, or environmental issues lead to some missing data during the time period. Table 3. 1 summarizes the number of equivalent days during which data were recorded for each month followed by their corresponding percentage of days. Fractional days are combined to sum to a whole number of days. Approximately 5800 events were extracted according to the low S4 andσφ thresholds stated before, while about 3000 events 19 were extracted based on the high thresholds. In this chapter, results obtained from the two sets of thresholds with 0.1 Hz cutoff frequency will be compared and analyzed. 3.2 S4 and σφ Distributions Figure 3. 1 and Figure 3. 2 are distributions of the two ionospheric scintillation indices S4 and σφ which directly reflect the intensity of amplitude and phase scintillations respectively. Maximum S4 and σφ during an event are extracted to show the strength of scintillation levels. In Figure 3. 1, all amplitude scintillation events are considered while Figure 3. 2 contains all phase scintillations. A scintillation event having both amplitude and phase scintillations are included in both figures. Results obtained from the low thresholds are represented in triangle markers and those from the high thresholds are marked by stars. For amplitude scintillation, the shapes of the two distributions are similar with the first few bins make up a large proportion indicating that amplitude scintillation observed in Alaska were generally weak. Cases of strong amplitude scintillation with S4 index more than 0.5 were rare with accumulative possibility of approximately 1% and 5% for the low and high thresholds respectively. For phase scintillation, the distributions for the two thresholds are slightly different with the result for the high thresholds peaks at the second bin. Compared with Figure 3. 1 strong phase scintillation with maximum σφ values over 30 degrees (or 0.5 rad) occurred much more frequently with accumulative possibility of about 12.4% and 36.8% for the two thresholds respectively. 20 0.7 Low thresholds (0.12 & 6º) High thresholds (0.15 & 15º) 0.6 Probability 0.5 0.4 0.3 0.2 0.1 0 0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1 maxS4 Figure 3. 1 Max S4 index distribution for amplitude scintillation events 0.45 Lower thresholds (0.12 & 6º) 0.4 Higher thresholds (0.15 & 15º) 0.35 Probability 0.3 0.25 0.2 0.15 0.1 0.05 0 0 20 40 60 80 100 maxσφ (degrees) Figure 3. 2 Maxσφ index distribution for phase scintillation events 21 3.3 Event Duration Distributions All event duration distribution 1800 1600 Low thresholds High thresholds 1200 mean = 8.93 min std = 12.52 min mean = 5.25 min std = 6.96 min Event number 1400 1000 800 600 400 200 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 Duration(min) (a) 70 80 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 Duration(min) (d) Different type event duration distribution Amplitude scin. event # 400 300 Low thresholds Amplitude Scintillation High thresholds Amplitude Scintillation 200 mean = 3.69min std = 5.02 min mean = 3.09min std = 4.26 min 100 0 10 20 30 40 (b) 50 60 70 10 20 30 40 (e) 50 60 70 Phase scin. event # 1500 1000 500 0 10 Low thresholds Phase scintillation High thresholds Phase scintillation mean = 9.68 min std = 13.07 min mean = 5.64 min std = 7.27 min 20 30 40 50 60 70 60 70 10 20 30 40 50 Duration(min) Duration(min) (f) (c) Figure 3. 3 Duration distributions for all scintillation events (a)(d), amplitude scintillation (b)(e) and phase scintillation (c)(f) under different thresholds 22 The duration of scintillation events is an important indicator of background ionosphere plasma distributions and dynamics. Longer scintillation events also has more negative impact on GNSS receivers performance. Figure 3. 3 presents several duration distributions for different types of scintillation events with results for the low thresholds on the left and those for the high thresholds on the right. Mean duration and standard deviation are labeled on each subplot. The overall event duration distribution regardless of the type (amplitude or phase) of the events are given in (a) and (d). Subplots (b)(c)(e)(f) compare amplitude scintillation event duration and number of events with those of phase scintillations. On average, amplitude scintillations lasted around three minutes while phase scintillations lasted nearly three times longer for the low threshold and twice for the high threshold. Additionally, phase scintillation events have been observed nearly an order of magnitude more often than the amplitude ones. Considering the intensity, the duration, and the occurrence frequency, it Amplitude scintillation duration is clear that phase scintillation dominates at high latitudes. 80 60 40 20 0 0 0.2 0.4 0.6 maxS 4 0.8 1 0 0.1 0.2 0.3 Average S 4 0.4 Phase scintillation duration 80 60 40 20 0 0 30 60 max σ 90 120 0 20 40 60 Average σ φ φ Figure 3. 4 Event duration vs. maximum and average S4 and σφ values based on amplitude and phase scintillation events extracted using the high thresholds 23 Figure 3. 4 compares event duration vs. the corresponding maximum and average S4 and σφ values based on amplitude and phase scintillation events extracted using the high thresholds. This plot shows that most scintillation events are short and weak while hardly any are long and strong. Comparing phase with amplitude scintillation, the former appears to have higher chance of events with stronger intensity and longer duration at the same time. 3.4 Event Temporal and Diurnal Dependency Scintillation event temporal density is defined as the number of events recorded during a certain period of time, which helps to identify the most likely period within a day when scintillation events may occur. Based on all the events extracted using the two thresholds from the entire available data set, overall event occurrence probability distributions have been established in Figure 3. 5 as a function of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), hours after local sunset and Magnetic Local Time (MLT). The conversion between UTC and MLT is shown in Table 3. 2. The two sets of results in Figure 3. 5 are similar with the upper three more smooth due to larger number of samples. A clear peak appeared at around UTC noon and most events were concentrated between 7 to 17 hours UTC which is between 10PM to 8AM local time (LT = UTC - 9) or 9PM to 7AM during daylight saving time (LT = UTC - 8). The same data were converted to hours with respect to (w/r/t/) the middle point between sunset and sunrise, and magnetic local time as are shown in Figure 3. 5 (b)(e) and (c)(f). Clearly, most scintillation events in Alaska were observed during either geographic or magnetic local nighttime, and around two hours post the middle point between sunset and sunrise. 24 Table 3. 2 AJ receiver corresponding corrected geomagnetic coordinates and magnetic local time Year 2010 2011 2012 2013 CGM_Latitude (°) 63.10 63.11 63.12 63.13 CGM_Longitude (°) 269.85 270.07 270.29 270.51 MLT midnight in UTC 10.75 10.74 10.72 10.71 Low thresholds (0.12 & 6º) Probability 0.12 0.08 0.04 0 0 6 12 18 (a) UTC (hours) 24 -6 0 6 12 0 (e) Hours wrt sunset sunrise middle point 6 12 18 (c) MLT (hours) 24 High thresholds (0.15 & 15º) Probability 0.12 0.08 0.04 0 0 6 12 18 (d) UTC (hours) 24 -6 0 6 12 0 6 12 18 24 (f) MLT(hours) (e) hours w/r/t/ the middle point between sunset and sunrise Figure 3. 5 Overall hourly event occurrence probability vs. UTC (a)(d), hours with respect to the middle point between sunset and sunrise (b)(e), magnetic local time (c)(f) under different thresholds 25 3.5 Event Spatial Distributions Low thresholds (0.12 & 6º) 300º High thresholds (0.15 & 15º) North 30º 45º 60º 300º 60º 30º 45º 60º 60º 75º 75º 270º 270º 90º 90º 240º 240º 120º 120º 210º 300º 180º (a) All events 210º 150º 30º 45º 60º 60º 300º 180º (d) All events 30º 45º 60º 75º 270º 240º 120º 270º 120º 150º 210º 180º (e) Amplitude scintillation 60º 300º 75º 270º 90º 240º 150º 210º 180º (b) Amplitude scintillation 300º 60º 75º 90º 30º 45º 60º 150º 30º 45º 60º 60º 75º 90º 240º 120º 270º 90º 240º 120º 150º 210º 180º (c) Phase scintillation 150º 210º 180º (f) Phase scintillation Figure 3. 6 Scintillation spatial occurrence for all scintillation events (a)(d), amplitude scintillation (b)(e) and phase scintillation (c)(f) under different thresholds (grid number: 120x120). 26 Event spatial distribution plots are given in Figure 3. 6 for all events, amplitude and phase scintillations to show where scintillations 300º were observed more frequently in the sky. The plots are presented in a sky view 0º 330º North 30º 30º 45º 60º 60º 75º 270º 90º form, in which the center is the receiver local zenith and circles around it are 120º 240º equal-elevation contours. The elevation 210º masking angle is 30° to minimize 180º 150º Figure 3. 7 24-hour SV path multipath effects. Each event was marked on the plot using the average elevation and azimuth after being weighted by the amplitudes of the two scintillation indices. Therefore a brighter pixel corresponds to more events and larger magnitude events. In each plot, the brightest region is near the center at elevation of 75° to 80° and azimuth of 180° to 210°. This is the local magnetic zenith that has been known to be a scintillation-active spot with frequent intense scintillation events which are also relatively free from multipath considering the high elevation. Amplitude scintillation in Figure 3. 6 (b) and (e) is especially concentrated around this local magnetic zenith, whereas phase scintillation appeared to occur more often elsewhere other than the zenith. Two regions near the edge in the subplot (c) and (f) are also brighter. Apart from scintillation, they could also be contributed by denser satellite paths (Figure 3. 7) in the area and multipath that overlay on scintillation induced fluctuations. 3.6 Percentage of SVs experiencing simultaneous scintillation An important measure of scintillation impact on satellite navigation is the number of satellites affected by scintillation simultaneously. This is because a navigation receiver can only generate a PVT solution when there is a minimum of four satellites available, and larger number of satellites can improve the geometric dilution of precision (GDOP), and hence the PVT solution accuracy. 27 Figure 3. 8 is a plot showing the local geomagnetic field variations (zero-mean strength) together with the number of satellites with elevation over 30 degrees that were affected by scintillation (S4 ≥ 0.12 or σφ ≥ 6°) simultaneously on July 15, 2012. The percentage of satellites affected by scintillation was also calculated by dividing the number by the total number of satellites with elevation angles higher than 30 degrees. The scintillation on this day was fairly intense and during some time periods all satellites above the elevation mask were affected by scintillation. About 25% of the day, over 50% satellites were simultaneously affected by scintillation. In addition, it can be noticed that fluctuations on magnetic field and percentage of satellites affected are highly synchronized, which will Percent B Field Variation (nT) be further discussed in Chapter 5. 800 H 0 D Z -800 100 Percent of SV Affected 0 Number of SV 6 No. SV Above 30 o Elevation 3 0 0 No. SV Affected 2 4 6 8 10 12 Time (Hours) 14 16 18 20 22 24 Figure 3. 8 Magnetic field variation, and number and percentage of satellites experiencing scintillation simultaneously on July 15 2012 based on the lower thresholds. Elevation mask is 30 degrees. 3.7 Seasonal Distributions The seasonal dependency of scintillation has been discovered by earlier research which also indicates that it is a regional phenomenon. At equatorial regions, more scintillation is observed around equinoxes (spring and autumn) (Beniguel et al., 2009). While at the polar cap, scintillation is more of a wintertime phenomenon (Li et al., 2010). 28 The location of our receiver is within the 50% auroral oval. As the data presented here were collected during the upswing period of a solar maximum, we observed seasonal and solar activity dependency. We divided a year into four seasons: spring - March to May; summer – June to August; fall – September to November; winter – December to February of the following year. In all we have data for eleven seasons in 32 months. Seasonal analysis is given in this section and monthly distributions are given in Appendix A for completeness. Figure 3. 9 compares the average of maxS4 and maxσφ values of the events that occurred during each season. From the upper subplots about amplitude scintillation, it can be observed that the S4 index on average did not vary much during the time period and the values kept low in general. However, the two subplots on the bottom for phase scintillation evidently display a seasonal pattern showing that spring and autumn had more intense phase scintillations. Moreover, a slow upward trend can also be observed which corresponds to an increase in solar activity over the 32 months. 29 Figure 3. 10 shows amplitude, phase, and all scintillation event duration seasonal dependence under different thresholds. It can be seen that the seasonal pattern in (b) is not clear, while the pattern in (a) is fairly noticeable. For both amplitude and phase scintillation, events in spring and autumn were observed generally longer than those in summers and winters. The influence of solar activity, however, is not very obvious in the figure. Seasonal variations in average event number per day is shown in Figure 3. 11. An obvious seasonal pattern can be observed. A stack histogram is presented so that the average event number per day in each season can be obtained by adding each segment up. The bottom, top, and middle segment represent phase scintillation only, amplitude scintillation only, and amplitude and phase scintillations coexisting scenarios respectively. 30 In general, summer and winter experienced fewer scintillation events than spring and autumn. The overall ascending trend in Figure 3. 11 stopped at spring 2012, and descends significantly after that. This transition is correlated with the dip in solar activity during the ongoing solar max. In order to show this the correlation between the solar activities and scintillation events, the figure also includes the monthly smoothed sunspot number which is averaged over each season, as an indicator of solar activity magnitude. Note that the monthly smoothed sunspot numbers in and after December 2012 are estimations from Solar Influences Data Analysis Center (SIDC). Clearly, the two sets of data match fairly well, showing that scintillation occurrence frequency is mainly influenced by solar activity while modulated by the relative position between the Sun and the Earth. 80 Phase Amplitude & phase scin. Choosing a proper filter is not an easy task and the prevalent method is a 6-order Butterworth filter with 0.1Hz cutoff frequency for both signal intensity and carrier phase measurements. This filter has been challenged by several researchers who blamed the filter for causing the condition known as ‘phase scintillation without amplitude scintillation’ especially at high latitudes (Forte and Radicella, 2002; Beach, 2006; Niu et al., 2012a). Recent studies presented in Niu et al. (2012b, 2012c) have shown that the 6th order Butterworth filter is an appropriate detrending tool if the cutoff frequency is lowered to 0.05 Hz for carrier phase measurements. Nevertheless, the use of 0.05 Hz cutoff frequency is to ensure that all ionosphere irregularity induced GPS signal phase fluctuations are included in the events analysis. As far as receiver carrier tracking performance is concerned, it is not necessary to include such low frequency phase components as the receiver PLL bandwidth is usually adequate to follow these low frequency phase variations. In this chapter we will compare the impact of using different cutoff frequencies on scintillation characterization. Since the detrending method only applies to carrier phase measurements, only σφ index is considered. In order to make better comparison, results obtained from using different cutoff frequencies and different σφ thresholds are put together in the plots below. 4.1 Maxσφ Index Distributions Figure 4. 1 shows maximum σφ index distributions among different conditions. Comparing the green and red markers (both use 15º as σφ threshold), the change in cutoff 32 frequency did not affect the general shape of the distributions. However, the percentage of the first few bins has lowered while the percentage of 40º to 70º bins increased, indicating that applying the lower cutoff frequency increases the σφ index values in general. Figure 4. 2 is an example illustrating how the σφ index is affected after applying the 0.05Hz cutoff frequency. 0.45 0.4 6o threshold + 0.1Hz cutoff 15o threshold + 0.1Hz cutoff 0.35 15o threshold + 0.05Hz cutoff Probability 0.3 0.25 0.2 0.15 0.1 0.05 0 0 20 40 60 σφ (degrees) Max 80 100 σφ (degrees) PRN = 26, July 15 2012, 19:30:00 - 20:40:00UTC 70 300 65 250 60 200 55 80 150 Cutoff Freq. = 0.1Hz Cutoff Freq. = 0.05Hz 60 40 20 0 0 10 20 30 40 Time (min) 50 60 70 Figure 4. 2 σφ index value comparison between 0.1Hz and 0.05Hz cutoff frequency 33 Azimuth (degrees) Elevation (degrees) Figure 4. 1 Max σφ index distribution comparison between thresholds and cutoff frequencies. 4.2 L2 P(Y) Tracking Performance As was mentioned before, the results shown in this section are based on measurements on GPS L1 CA signal. The L2 P(Y) tracking of the receiver is based on semi-codeless tracking. Thus the measurements on L2 band are more noisy and the tracking is more vulnerable to scintillation. As a result the scintillation indicators on L2 were not considered. Nevertheless, we were curious about the quantitative relationship between the L1 CA and L2 P(Y) tracking of the AJ receiver during scintillation and how the cutoff frequency values would affect it. Figure 4. 3 presents statistical distributions showing the possibility of occurrence of cycle slips or loss of lock on L2 while L1 tracking remains locked during phase scintillation events. The horizontal axis shows the σφ index on L1 when the L2 P(Y) signal lost lock. Only phase scintillation has been considered since amplitude scintillations were generally too small to cause problems to the carrier tracking loop in the data. The distributions are as expected as the possibility of loss-of-lock or cycle slips on L2 is proportional to the σφ 34 index value on L1 and the curve for 0.05Hz cutoff frequency shift right (to larger values) from the one for 0.1Hz cutoff frequency. When the σφ index on L1 reached to 60° and 90° for the two cutoff frequencies, it was almost definite that the receiver would have trouble tracking the L2 signal. On the other hand, even when the σφ index was relatively low (around 15°), the L2 P(Y) signal could still lose lock or experience cycle slip. Exponential polyfit curves were generated based on the scatter plot data points to fit the trend of the distributions (the solid curves). The polynomial obtained from Matlab for 0.1Hz cutoff frequency is 15 exp 60 ( 5. 1 ) where p1 = 3.364e-005, p2 = -5.934e-003, p3 = 3.562e-001, p4 = -7.303e+000. The polynomial for 0.05Hz cutoff frequency is exp 30 90 ( 5. 2 ) where p1 = 2.147e-005, p2 = -5.710e-003, p3 = 5.121e-001, p4 = -15.531e+000. 4.3 Event Duration Distributions Phase scintillation event duration distributions are compared in Figure 4. 4 with means and standard deviations noted in the legend. Unlike Figure 4. 1, the distribution for 15º threshold and 0.05Hz cutoff frequency is closer to the one for 6º threshold and 0.1Hz cutoff. This indicates that applying the 0.05Hz cutoff frequency not only makes events appearing stronger but also lasting longer. 35 Phase scintillation event number 1200 6o threshold + 0.1Hz cutoff mean = 9.68; std = 13.07 15o threshold + 0.1Hz cutoff mean = 5.64; std = 7.27 15o threshold + 0.05Hz cutoff mean = 8.41; std = 10.80 800 400 0 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 Duration (min) Figure 4. 4 Phase scintillation event duration comparison between different thresholds and cutoff frequencies 4.4 Event Temporal and Diurnal Dependency Similar plots for scintillation occurrence probabilities for the 0.05Hz cutoff frequency are provided in Figure 4. 5, in which only phase scintillation events are included. Previous studies have discussed the dependence of high latitude scintillation occurrence on geomagnetic activity using the IMF data (Li et al., 2010; Alfonsi et al., 2011), as well as the global magnetic index Kp (Beniguel et al., 2009). In this thesis a quantitative correlation between local geomagnetic field disturbances and ionosphere scintillation is studied based on GNSS data collected by the GSV4004B receiver and fluxgate measurements from a magnetometer co-located in Gakona, Alaska (HAARP, ASF). Figure 5. 1 and Figure 5. 2 show the correlation between scintillation indices and the magnitude of local geomagnetic field deviations based on data collected during three days with strong scintillation events - March 1 of 2011, July 9 of 2012, and July 15 of 2012. Average amplitude and phase scintillation indices were obtained over one hour interval for all satellite paths within the vicinity of the local magnetic zenith (elevation: 78°±5°, azimuth: 195°±20°). Standard deviations of H, D, Z components and their square root were also calculated over one hour period. A linear correlation can be observed in both Figure 5. 1(a) and Figure 5. 2 (a). The correlation coefficients between the geomagnetic field deviation magnitude and the phase and amplitude scintillation indices are 0.87 and 0.73 respectively, clearly indicating a stronger correlation between phase scintillation and geomagnetic field disturbances. Similar correlation values are obtained between deviations of D, H, and Z components of the geomagnetic field disturbances and the phase and amplitude scintillation indices. 39 200 250 100 200 Standard deviations of H/D/Z (nT) Square root of std of H,D,Z (nT) 300 Corr. A more striking way to demonstrate the relationship between geomagnetic field disturbance and the level phase scintillation is shown in Figure 5. 3. Instead of correlating each scintillation index values with the geomagnetic field disturbance values measured at 40 the same time, we compared maximum phase scintillation index values of phase scintillation events with their corresponding local magnetometer measured peak-to-peak field disturbance magnitude is generated based on 665 phase scintillation events extracted from eleven days of strong phase scintillation. The dates includes five days from 2011 (3/1, 3/10, 5/2, 5/28, and 11/1) and six days in 2012 (2/15, 3/10, 3/15, 7/9, 7/15, and 7/16). The figure shows that larger disturbances in geomagnetic field lead to stronger scintillation events in general. Note that no amplitude scintillation events are considered because of the much smaller number of events as well as their lower intensity available in the data set. 1 Maxσφ probability 0.8 15º < maxσφ < 30º 30º < maxσφ < 45º 0.6 45º < maxσφ < 60º 0.4 60º < maxσφ < 75º maxσφ > 75º or loss of lock 0.2 0 [50,280) [280,519) [519, 754) [754, 988) (a) Geomagnetic field amplitude peak-to-peak (nT) Maxσφ probability 1 1 0.8 0.6 0.4 0.2 0 50 242 433 625 816 50 184 317 451 584 50 204 357 511 664 (b) maxH - minH (nT) (c) maxD - minD (nT) (d) maxZ - minZ (nT) Figure 5. 3 Marginal max σφ occurrence probability on variations in geomagnetic field amplitude. 41 Chapter 6 Conclusions In this thesis, statistical characterization of high-latitude ionospheric scintillation climatology was presented on the basis of 50Hz amplitude and phase data recorded by the GSV4004B receiver located in Gakona, AK. Two sets of thresholds for S4 and σφ have been implemented to filter scintillation events from the raw data and about 5800 and 3000 events were extracted respectively. Based on the events extracted, several statistical distributions have been obtained and discussed which include S4 and σφ distributions, event temporal and spatial distributions as well as event duration distributions. The influences of local time, seasons and solar activity on scintillation have also been revealed. In addition, comparison between results from 0.1Hz and 0.05Hz cutoff frequency is presented in this thesis as well. These results provide a better understanding of when, where and how scintillation happens in high-latitude region and can help with future scientific research on the space weather and robust GNSS receiver development. The major results discussed in the previous sections can be summarized as follows: At high latitude, phase scintillation is much stronger and more frequent than amplitude scintillation, regardless of the solar activity. For the low thresholds and 0.1Hz cutoff frequency, over 80% of observed events are phase scintillation only events, while only 11% are amplitude only events. 9% are events with both amplitude and phase scintillations. Among all phase scintillations, 50% of them have σφ > 10 degrees. For amplitude scintillation, 90% of the events have S4 index under 0.25. Phase scintillation events last much longer than amplitude scintillation events. For the low thresholds, the average phase scintillation events last 9.7 minutes, while the average amplitude scintillation events only last 3.7 minutes. 42 Scintillation events are most frequently observed during geographic or magnetic local nighttime, especially after two hours post local sunset. For Alaska this corresponds to approximately UTC noon. Approximately 40% of scintillation occurred 2 hours within UTC noon. In the northern auroral zone where the receiver is located, scintillation intensity and occurrence frequency are primarily affected by solar activity and is secondarily modulated by seasons. In spring and autumn, scintillation is usually more intense, more frequent and longer lasting than in summer and winter. Scintillation occurs more frequently and intensely around the local magnetic zenith. For the low thresholds, about 20% of scintillations events with duration longer than 5 minutes and maxS4 index more than 0.3 or maxσφ index more than 30º occurred within 10º elevation and 20º azimuth around the local magnetic zenith. The use of 0.05Hz cutoff frequency increases the number of phase scintillation events and makes them appear stronger and last longer. It doesn’t change much the temporal and spatial dependency as well as the seasonal pattern. L2 P(Y) semi-codeless tracking is much more fragile to scintillation than L1 tracking. For the receiver used, when σφ on L1 reaches 60° and 90° for 0.1Hz and 0.05Hz cutoff frequency respectively, the probability of L2 cycle slip/loss-of-lock tends to 1. Scintillation event occurrence and event magnitude are strongly correlated with the variation rate and amplitude of local geomagnetic field measurements observed at high latitudes. The correlation coefficient between the magnitude of local magnetic field disturbance and phase and amplitude scintillation indices are 0.87 and 0.73 respectively. During a particular day on July 15, 2012 when large local magnetic field disturbance lasted about 15 hours and the peak disturbance exceeded 1500 nT, over 50% of satellites in view were affected by scintillation for over 25% of time. 43 Bibliography [1] Aarons, J.
