Retirees’
THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
Alumni Association extends their
special offers
The Alumni Association welcomes retirees of the University of
Manitoba to stay in touch through their website, where you will
find information about Homecoming, class reunions, events such
as out-of-town receptions and alumni-sponsored Manitoba Moose
or Winnipeg Goldeyes games. Special offers, such as discounts
on tickets, are extended to all alumni, retirees and friends of the
University of Manitoba, and can be found on the website: www.
umanitoba.ca/alumni, or you can get more information by calling
(204) 474-9946 or by e-mail at [email protected].
We wish to thank the Alumni Association for including retirees
who are not alumni/ae of the University of Manitoba in their special offers.
Another Successful
University of
Manitoba United
Way Campaign
Congratulations are extended
to the retirees of the University
for their outstanding support
of the University’s United
Way Campaign. Despite the
significant delay in sending
out the campaign literature to
retirees, we exceeded the goal
of $75,000 for retiree contributions by pledging $76,200.
Thanks are extended to everyone who contributed to the
success of this campaign.
In case you are interested, you
can obtain a list of the programs supported by the United

Next President’s
Reception:
The next President’s Reception
for Retirees will be held on
Saturday, October 18, 2008, on
the Fort Garry Campus. We
are hoping that Dr. David T.
Barnard, the University’s 11th
President and Vice-Chancellor
will be able to be present at
this event. Immediately prior
to the Reception, UMRA will
be holding its Annual General
Meeting.
UMRA
Membership
We have been very pleased with
the number of persons who have
joined UMRA since its first AGM
in 2004. Our most recent statistics show that between January
2007 and January 2008, our total
membership has grown from 222
to 338, an increase of 52%. Of the
338 total members, 124 are Active
members who pay dues annually, 93 are Life Members who
paid a one-time fee of $100, and
121 are Inactive members. Most
of the Inactive members live outside of Winnipeg (either in other
communities in Manitoba or
outside the province). Although
members living at a distance
from Winnipeg are unlikely to
participate in the activities of
the Association, their interest
and support is greatly appreciated. Membership in UMRA is
available to any person who has
retired from the University and
that person’s spouse/partner.

The 23rd President’s Reception for Retirees
You may recall the opening
heading of the September 2007
edition of the Retirees’ News,
“One Thing That is Predictable
– the President’s Reception”.
Unfortunately, the reception was
cancelled due to the labour dispute on campus at the time. This
just proves one has to be careful
about making rash statements!
The 23rd President’s Reception
for Retirees will be held on
Saturday, April 26, 2008, in
Marshall McLuhan Hall, Room
204, University Centre, Fort Garry
Campus, starting at 2:00 p.m.
We are very fortunate that our
guest speaker, Dr. Allan Ronald,
who was scheduled to speak to
us in October, will be able to be
with us for this event. The focus
of his presentation will be Global
Health – A Role for Manitoba.
We are very much aware of the
health pandemics, such as HIV
and more recently SARS, which
affect people around the world.
While such pandemics have their
most dramatic impact on resourceconstrained societies, no country
is immune from their occurrence
within its borders. Consequently,
it is important for all nations and
the jurisdictions within them to
have the structures and systems
in place to effectively combat
pandemics whenever they arise,
in order to achieve the desired
outcomes with compassion and
empathy.
This presentation is based on
the work Dr. Ronald and others
in the Department of Medical
Microbiology in our Faculty of
Medicine are doing in combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic
in Africa. In 1980, before we
in North America were aware
of HIV/AIDS, Dr. Ronald was
instrumental in establishing
the University of Manitoba/
University of Nairobi World
Health Organization Research
and Training Program in Sexually
Transmitted Diseases. This program has been called the most
important research site in the
developing world.
Recently retired but still very
active, Dr. Ronald has had a
distinguishing career in medicine, science, administration
and education, most of it with
the Department of Medical
Microbiology in the Faculty of
Medicine at the University of
Manitoba. He has received numerous awards in recognition
of his outstanding contributions
to the combating of pandemics,
including the Order of Canada,
Fellow of the Royal Society of
Canada and the F.N.G. Starr
Award, the highest award of the
Canadian Medical Association.
Following Dr. Ronald’s presenSzathmáry,
tation, Dr. Emoke
˝
President and Vice-Chancellor,
will bring us up to date on
happenings at the University.
This being the last President’s
Reception for Retirees which
Dr. Szathmáry will attend as
President and Vice-Chancellor
of our University, we invite you
to join us in a special tribute
for her ten years of support of
University of Manitoba retirees.
At the reception which follows, there will be plenty of
time to meet with your former colleagues and friends.
Remember—your spouse/partner is most welcome to attend
this event. Also, be sure to
invite those survivors of retirees whom you know. You are
asked to RSVP by April 18th by
calling Linda Lassman at 4749124 or e-mailing her at linda_
[email protected].
Basic Computer
Training
UMRA offered its first basic computer training workshop last
November. The response was positive, with participants expressing
the desire for more such workshops.
Consequently, it has been decided
to offer a similar workshop at a date
and time to be determined. If you
are interested in learning the basics
about operating a computer, please
call the UMRA office at 474-7175
and leave a message indicating your
interest, when you would be available to take the course, your name
and phone number.
Additional Computer Training
There are constantly new things to
learn about the software programs
that we have or would like to have
on our computers. One source of
such assistance is the computer
courses offered by Information
Services and Technology (IST) at the
University. These courses include,
for example, Excel 2007 – Basics and
Photoshop – Introduction. Current
employees and students can pre-register for these workshops. However,
many of the courses are not filled.
When this happens, retirees will be
given the opportunity to register
for the course. Through arrangements made by Debbie Norman,
Leader of the IST Training Team,
the fee charged retirees will be the
same as for students. To find out
what courses are being offered, go
to www.umanitoba.ca/ist/training/
reg. If you find a course that interests you, call 474-8123 a few days
prior to the course date. If there are
spaces available you are welcome
to register. IST offers courses three
times a year, so if you cannot register for a current course, it may be
offered later in the year. A brochure
about courses to be offered during
intersession will be available at the
President’s Reception.
You wanted
help
with computer problems
in your home
Since it was introduced last September, several UMRA members have
availed themselves of this service. The service, provided by graduate
students in Computer Science, includes both hardware and software
assistance. The charge for the service depends upon the nature of
the problem and the time involved in solving it. If you would like
this assistance, call the UMRA office at 474-7175 and leave a message
along with your name and phone number.
University of Manitoba Retirees Association
Committees Invite Volunteers
Our Communications Committee and Membership Committee are
inviting volunteers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities.
The specific areas for which volunteers may be of assistance are described below. Each committee meets about twice a year. If you are interested in contributing to the ongoing viability of our retiree association you may contact us by phone at 474-7175, by e-mail at retiree@cc.
umanitoba.ca or by writing to us at Box 5, Administration Building,
University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2
There are two vacancies on the Communications Committee. One
vacancy is that of editor of the Retirees’ News. The job of the editor is to
prepare the content of the newsletter. Upon completion, the newsletter is sent to a graphic artist for the addition of art work before being
printed and mailed out by the University. Preparation of the Retirees’
News takes place in late January and again in late August in order to
be ready for distribution five weeks prior to the President’s Reception
for Retirees. Experience in writing newsletters would be an asset,
though not essential, for this editorial task.
The second vacancy is that of Assistant Webmaster. UMRA maintains
a website which requires updating as circumstances warrant. If you
have experience in developing and posting material to websites (or
would like to learn how to use the appropriate software) and have
a computer with internet access, our Webmaster, Gunter Baureiss,
would appreciate your assistance.
We are also looking for someone to chair our Membership Committee.
In addition, we need someone to maintain our membership list. If
you have experience with setting up and maintaining a database, we
would appreciate your assistance.
Your help was appreciated
In our September 2007 issue, we asked for volunteers to participate
in the “Take Our Kids to Work” program held at the University on
November 7th. We thank those retirees who participated in this event.
