Fertile Crescent Project
Assignment: You will work independently or with a partner to create a city in the Fertile Crescent. You
must create a plan or blueprint for the city. You may choose how you will represent this (examples: Model
Magic, board, diorama, computer software, etc.). You will then present your city to the class. You must
meet the following criteria:
1.
Name: Give your city a name.
 Explain why you chose that name.
 Make sure the name is displayed prominently on your presentation (we need to be able
to see and read it clearly!).
2.
Location: Decide on a specific location for your city.
 Consider how you will make use of natural resources (i.e. rivers, mountains, deserts,
seas).
 Explain where you will put your farmland and animals and why you chose that spot.
3. Religion: The people who live in your city are polytheistic (they believe in many gods and
goddesses). However, you need to pick one god or goddess to be the patron god or goddess
(protector) of your city.
 Choose your patron god or goddess and explain why you chose that one.
 Design a ziggurat for your god or goddess. Make sure it reflects the “personality” of the
god or goddess.
4. Government: Design the government and laws for your city-state.
 Every city-state in the Fertile Crescent needs a king. Give your king a name.
 Give your king a family (wife or wives, children, father, and grandfather).
 Design a code of laws for your city-state and give several examples of laws and
consequences.
 Decide how your laws will be displayed for the people to see.
5. Daily Life: Include items that the citizens of your city will use on a daily basis.
 Design a bazaar or marketplace with shops for your citizens to visit and buy things.
 Design a few houses in which your citizens can live. Make sure they are in the Sumerian
style.
 The Babylonians designed a system of roads. Include some roads so that your citizens
can move easily around the city.
