Effect of rhetorical devices in Old Major`s speech

Using PEE + E paragraphs to structure your writing allows you show your
understanding to the reader by making clear points which are proven by evidence
and which can then be explored in greater detail.

With the

in the text.
Throughout his speech, Old Major
speaks directly to his audience as
though they are all friends and equals:
for example, “Comrades you have heard
already…” (line 1) and “Now, comrades,
what is the nature of this life of ours?”
(line 4). By using the term ‘comrade’,
which means ‘friend’ or ‘companion’, he
makes each of them believe that they
are being spoken to individually and
that they matter to him. The audience
might feel like they are privy to (or,
secretly
sharing
in)
something
important that Major wants them to
know. Interestingly, the term ‘comrade’
tends to be predominantly in the
context of communism, thus providing
another link between the novel and its
historical basis.

meaning of the text.
Alternatively, you
will consider what
the audience’s
response might be.
