Landor Phototex Phototex Handbook_v3.indd 4-5 Page 4 Landor Phototex Page 5 30/6/14 16:02:48 Choosing Between Landor Phototex Original, Opaque and EX Tips for Using Landor Phototex Landor Phototex Original Phototex is easy to apply to most surfaces. Landor Phototex Original is a self-adhesive fabric which can stick to a vast range of surfaces. The following steps will help to ensure that you get the best results when using Phototex. Features: • • • • • • • Low tack self-adhesive that is removable, repositionable, re-useable and totally paste free. Preparation Easily applied and easily removed without leaving any residue. 1. Check that you have the correct version of Landor Phototex for your printer or application before starting to print. There is a water based ink version and a solvent/UV/Latex version. Will not tear, wrinkle or stretch. The Solvent version can be used with eco-solvent, solvent, latex and UV inks. Will stick to non-porous walls, windows, doors and floors and many other surfaces. 2. Ensure the surface is dust, grease and moisture free. Any treatment or paint that has been previously used on the wall should be left for 4 weeks to dry and gas off before Landor Phototex is applied (always check manufacturers’ recommendations). Will not damage host surface. Can be applied to curved surfaces. Phototex is available in cut sheets or rolls (see page 14). Landor Phototex Opaque Landor Phototex Opaque is the latest self-adhesive material on the market and has been developed for applications where the original wall/surface is coloured or has a pattern which would demonstrate some show through. The increased block-out properties of Landor Phototex Opaque are the ideal solution for these applications. Features: • • • • • • It is good practice to continually inspect your work while hanging it to obtain a perfect result. 3. When applying Landor Phototex, please allow it to get to standard room temperature so that the adhesive can reach its optimum strength. 4. It may help if you have a look at our YouTube videos available on our Phototex website www.phototex.co.uk/what-it-does/videos and the Gadget Show video featuring Landor Phototex www.phototex.co.uk/gadget_show.htm. Alternatively, more hints and tips can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) section of this handbook (see pages 16-18). Also, support information is continually updated through our ‘Phototex Club’ at www.phototex.co.uk. 90%+ opaque block out Low tack self-adhesive that is removable, repositionable re-useable and totally paste free. Easily applied and easily removed without leaving any residue. Will stick to non-porous walls, windows, doors, floors and many other surfaces. Can be applied to curved surfaces. Application Phototex EX is available in rolls (see page 14). Landor Phototex EX Landor Phototex EX has been developed to stick to more challenging surfaces and is recommended for outdoor applications or where the host surface has a texture. Phototex EX has a 40-45% stronger adhesive compared to Phototex Original. Features: • • • • • Landor Phototex Original is not recommended for textured, porous or dusty surfaces (i.e. brick or cement walls), as full adhesion cannot be achieved, however if you are going to consider these types of surfaces or if you have any doubt about the condition of the wall, it’s moisture level or the roughness of the surface, we always recommend testing them with a sample of Landor Phototex beforehand, as we would not want you to be disappointed. Samples can be obtained from Landor UK Ltd on request Medium tack self-adhesive that is removable, repositionable re-useable and totally paste free. Easily applied and easily removed without leaving any residue. 5. Landor Phototex is a paste free wall covering, any experienced decorator will be able to familiarise themselves quickly to create a perfect feature wall and anyone with good basic DIY skills can achieve great results. Depending on the size of your surface it may be helpful to have two people install it. Try not to let the adhesive come together, or let Landor Phototex fold up against itself. If it does, separate it by carefully pulling it apart taking care not to damage the printed area Start at the top of your print and pull down approximately 4” / 10cm of the backing paper. By lightly pressing and smoothing from the centre outwards, apply the exposed adhesive area of your print to the chosen surface. Then continue to slowly pull the backing paper downward in small increments smoothing as you go. Once the process is started it can be easier if another person holds the bottom and pulls down slightly giving some tension, keeping it square and straight. Will stick to non-porous walls, windows, doors, floors and many other surfaces. Can be applied to curved surfaces. Aftercare Phototex EX is available in rolls (see page 14). 6. For long term indoor use, where ink fading could be an issue, potential high wear areas or outdoor use, applying a liquid protective coating is advised. Landor Wallpaper Matte coating has been tested and matched for use with Landor Phototex. Best results are achieved by applying the coating by roller once hung on the wall. Such products can be purchased from Landor UK Ltd upon request. For applications such as: Cafe’s, schools or kitchens, where there is potential for a wall covering to be subject to liquid spills, marking or in heavy traffic areas, it is recommended that you use a Marabu / Clearshield liquid protective coating to increase the level of resistance to water or abrasion. Once applied, the coating allows for cleaning with a damp soft cloth and the use of mild detergents to assist with cleaning if necessary. Please contact us if you need further information on our range of liquid protective coatings. Landor Phototex Phototex Handbook_v3.indd 6-7 Page 6 Landor Phototex Page 7 30/6/14 16:03:16 Landor Phototex Printer and Ink Profile Settings Landor Phototex Application Advice We are constantly developing new profiles and support information to help our customers to obtain the best print results. Landor Phototex does not need heavy ink lay down inherent with papers, a good starting point is a Fine Art Paper setting as there is less ink used to obtain good results. Surfaces and Precautionary measures However to get the very print best results when using Landor Phototex it is always best to use colour profiles made specifically for your printer and it’s inks. We have profiles that could be suitable and even if we don’t have the exact profile for your printer we can give you tips and advice on where to get them. Just call or email us with the details of your printer and we will do our best to help you. It is very important that you allow at least 30 days before adhering Landor Phototex to a newly painted surface. Bubbles can occur if the paint is still out gassing off. Also make sure all dry wall painted surfaces or a repainted surface have been primed in order to not leave possible adhesive or peel paint upon removal. Adhesive strength Landor Phototex has been tested outdoors for over 10 years in numerous climatic conditions including America and Central European regions. We can confirm positive results for outdoor use with water, solvent, latex, and UV based inks. We have signs still securely adhered after 10 years, with some expected ink fading. Landor Phototex wall covering remains intact and secured on flat non-porous surfaces, in most conditions. We strongly recommend that Landor Phototex is stuck on a flat, smooth, clean and dry surface for best results.. Bare metal surfaces (copper, brass, aluminium) can oxidize and damage the adhesive and in rare cases due to this leave an adhesive film when removed. So you may need to use a mild detergent or multi-purpose cleaner to remove this residue. Ink compatibility Printing on to Landor Phototex with water based and full solvent inkjet inks has been very successful however we do offer the following advice for “Eco” solvent, Latex and UV inks. Eco Solvent Inks Some “Eco” inks can be affected by moisture, sun and high temperatures therefore we do not recommend placing these outdoors unless a liquid protective coating is applied, such as Landor Wallpaper Matte, a matched solution. UV Curable Inks When printing with UV curable inks, it is possible in rare instances to overheat the material and cause the adhesive to weaken up to 50% during the printing process. Although this is very rare it is important to keep the lamps at a lower setting than most other substrates. We recommend you compare a printed sample to a non-printed sample from the same roll so you can easily tell if the adhesive was overheated or weakened during printing. Touching the adhesive material will not give you a true reading. You need to place the samples on a wall for 24hrs and see if there is curling and pull them off the wall a few times to check for adhesive resistance, which must be present.. In addition with UV inks, if you lay down an extremely heavy solid area, the weight of the ink actually can pull against the material (acting like an over laminate) making it curl. If this occurs you may need to leave a small border in order to prevent curl – this is for UV inks only. We strongly suggest you test this with all UV inks, just to be sure. An easy way to test this is to leave your printed sample for 24-36 hours. If the edges do not curl, the material was then unaffected. Latex Due to the high heater settings used to cure /dry latex inks it is recommended to follow similar precautions as shown above for printing with UV inks. Landor Phototex Phototex Handbook_v3.indd 8-9 Page 8 Landor Phototex Page 9 30/6/14 16:03:34 Phototex Installation Guide 1 Measure your ‘start’ length from the far right or left-hand side of the wall. 2 7 Using a plumb line or spirit level, draw a straight vertical line. Repeat the process. Place each strip in order. You will have overlaps between each strip. 8 Using a very sharp craft knife and your smoother to help guide you, push into the corners and slowly cut along the edge. Do the same for the right hand side of the wall as well as the top of the wall. ‘Start’ length Strip 1 3 Line up the top of the wall witha faint guide line at the top of the strip then position the left hand side of the strip on the line you have drawn. Use tape to hold ‘strip 1’ in place. 4 Peel off 30cm of Phototex backing so that it can hold strip 1 in position. Smooth the sticky section of the Phototex into place. At this stage, remove all of your tape but do not trim anything. 6 Position ‘strip 2’ using tape in the same way as you did with ‘strip 1’. Use faint line markings to guide you on the overlap. 9 Strip 2 To trim the overlaps, make a vertical, clean and straight cut through both layers at the centre of the overlaps. 10 Lift the overlap and peel away the waste on the bottom layer and the top layer, then smooth the layers back down. Strip 1 5 Slowly peel off the backing of the Phototex whilst smoothing down from the centre in a side to side motion as you go. The job is now completed. Strip 1 Landor Phototex Phototex Handbook_v3.indd 10-11 Strip 2 Page 10 Landor Phototex Page 11 30/6/14 16:03:37 Machine Contour Cutting Phototex Troubleshooting: Ensuring correct blade installation Cutting right through the backing paper When a blade is placed into the holder it can be adjusted as to how far it protrudes from the bottom of the blade holder. This should be set so that the blade only protrudes by between 0.5mm to 1mm depending on the blades cutting angle, (see ‘blade choice’ below). Refer to the printer manufacturers’ instructions on adjusting the blade depth within the holder. Check that the blade is fitted properly and not protruding too far, adjust if necessary. Check that the pressures are set correctly. See ‘Ensuring correct blade installation’. (See page 9 for further information.) Not cutting through Phototex Speed of cutting When setting up the cutter there is an option to alter the speed of the cut; when cutting Landor Phototex a slower speed is generally set. The optimum speed for cutting Landor Phototex should be set at around 30. This may vary slightly depending on the machine. Pressure of cutting The next option is setting the pressure required. Unlike vinyl, Landor Phototex is cut using a high pressure with slow speeds (as stated above). The pressure settings should be set between 90 – 98, depending on the blade set and type. Some variations may apply (see ‘blade choice’ opposite).. Offset of cutting Make sure that the blade is sharp and clean. Replace the blade if necessary following manufactures guidelines. Backing paper comes off with graphic when removed. If part of the backing sheet comes away with the graphic then the cutting depth and/or pressure needs adjusting. Threads on corners / angles As Landor Phototex is a fabric based media threads can occur when angle cutting. To solve this issue the angle should be turned in to a curve by altering the nodes of the angle, see the two following diagrams. The offset is a setting that is rarely or never changed, depending on the blade type used. The offset is in direct line to the angle of blade i.e. if you have a blade with a 30° angle then the offset setting would be 0.3 etc. Summary Diagram 1 Once all the above have been set correctly, cutting Landor Phototex can commence. It is recommended to carry out a test cut, review and make adjustments. Repeat this process until the required quality level is achieved. This shows the angle of the cut line on the graphic when zoomed in. Variations There are a number of contributors to the final cut quality, explained below. Diagram 2 Blade choice Getting the right angled blade for the job is important. For mainly straight lines cuts and minor curves, a 30° blade is best. A 60° blade is most suited to cutting out more complex and angled graphics. The often used 45° blade is a good all round blade although it is not the best choice when cutting out such things as lettering. This shows the altered angle of the cut line on the graphic when zoomed in. The best blades to purchase are made of sub micron grain size tungsten carbide; these are longer lasting than the standard carbide and steel blades. They create a better cut and better value for money long term. Maintaining the blade is important. Regularly remove the bottom part of the blade holder following manufactures guidelines and take out the blade, wiping away any dust or deposits. The area around the holder benefits from the same treatment. Failure to do this could result in poor or inefficient cutting on the angles Temperature As with most substrates, temperature makes a difference when cutting Landor Phototex. A warm room, 20 – 22oC, is recommended as this will keep the media softer and therefore makes it easier to cut. Liquid Lamination Place a node either side if the single corner node, group them all together and select curve type, then highlight the original corner node and delete it. This should automatically create the curve. The curve should not be visible to the human eye but creates a seamless path for the cut, therefore solving the threading issues. Generally this should only be required if the angle is less than 90°. The best form of lamination for Landor Phototex is liquid lamination. Please keep in mind that with any substrate that has been laminated the cutting pressure will need to be raised slightly to allow for the extra layer. Always make a test cut after any alteration of cutting pressure and asses the quality. Hand Cutting Tungsten carbide blades should be used for hand cutting. For the best cut with clean edges the blade should be renewed on a regular basis. Landor Phototex Phototex Handbook_v3.indd 14-15 Page 14 Landor Phototex Page 15 30/6/14 16:03:40 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) What is Phototex? Should I let Landor Phototex dry before cutting? Landor Phototex wallpaper is a textured, self-adhesive fabric wall covering. Yes. It is always best to make sure any inkjet media is dry before starting to cut, Landor Phototex is no exception. Landor Phototex won’t curl if not fully dry but attempting to cut through a wet ink layer may lead to all manner of problems if ink builds up on the blade or the holder. Simply print it, peel off the backing paper and put it on the wall or other surface. The unique patented adhesive means Landor Phototex is fully removable as the adhesive does not cure. So there is no more mess or hassle when putting it up or taking it down. What is the best way to protect my printed Landor Phototex? How easy is Landor Phototex to put up? Many of our customers want extra protection for Landor Phototex so they use liquid protective coatings. The positive effects are that liquid coatings can improve colour vibrancy, protect from abrasion, reduce ink fading due to the effects of UV and help to keep Landor Phototex clean. LLandor Phototex is a strong fabric which is robust enough to remove and refit, this helps in two ways. When applying Landor Phototex if there are any bubbles or wrinkles simply peel back and smooth onto the surface again. Please refer to the installation guide (pages 10-11) or the application advice section of this handbook (page 9). We recommend hanging Landor Phototex onto the wall and hand applying a liquid protective coating over the finished surface for the best protection. Our liquid protective coating handbook is available at www.landoruk.com for more information. Is a special surface needed to stick on? Landor Phototex will stick to virtually any flat smooth surface. We have experience of sticking it over wall papers, painted walls, windows, poles, doors, cars, boats, tiles, sealed wood, mirrors, white fronted goods and many more. Visit any page on www.phototex.co.uk to see real applications. Can someone print Landor Phototex for me? Can Landor Phototex be used in the bathroom? Do I need to use application tape? Yes it can, high humidity does not affect Phototex. We ran tests for over 6 months in a shower and it is still stuck as though it was the first day. However it is recommended that added surface protection in the form of liquid protected coating is applied, such as Landor ‘Wallpaper Matte’. No. Landor Phototex is a polyester weave fabric making it very stable and easy to hang. If there happens to be an issue you simply peel it back and re-apply. Yes. We have partners who specialise in printing Landor Phototex, send us a quick email and we will be happy to put you in touch with one. Do you butt-join or overlap Landor Phototex? How do I make cut out shapes? Butt joining Landor Phototex gives the best final finish. Landor Phototex is fully coated allowing edge to edge printing. Alternatively you can print it leaving a border and trim with a sharp knife and a long ruler. With practice, joins can be virtually eliminated visually, then a liquid coating can be applied by roller (Wallpaper Matte for example) to seal and protect Landor Phototex. See the Installation guide within this handbook (pages 10-11). Landor Phototex can be ‘kiss cut’ when it is printed so you simply peel it off as the right shape, for further advice please see the Machine Contour Cutting Guide (pages 12-13).Landor Phototex can also be simply cut by hand a sharp craft knife or scissors. s s Q Q A A F F Can I put Landor Phototex on newly painted walls? Is the product totally opaque / block-out? We always recommend a minimum drying period of 4 weeks for a painted wall, longer if possible to make sure that the paint has fully gassed off so that bubbles and peeling is avoided. Landor Phototex Opaque is specifically designed with additional block-out properties compared to the Phototex Original product. Can I reuse the sticker/wallpaper when I peel it off? Landor Phototex is well suited for this due to its patented adhesive. How is Landor Phototex transported once it is printed? We have customers who use Landor Phototex over and over again by re-applying it to the release liner when they take it from the wall, ‘look after the glue and it will look after you’! Landor Phototex can be rolled against itself. If the image is to be taken down and put somewhere else it is good practice to keep the original liner to protect the glue, maintaining its excellent adhesive qualities. How much residue is left on the surface when I peel off the sticker or wallpaper? What is the working temperature range for Phototex? Landor Phototex is designed to leave no residue. We have experience through our partners in America that Landor Phototex has been applied at subzero temperatures (-10 degrees and up to 110 degrees with no issues) and performs in climates as diverse as Denmark and Australia both internally and externally, we currently are working on an official application and end use temperature guide. Is Landor Phototex available in sheets and rolls? Rolls and sheets are available see the Specifications and Availability section of this handbook for details (page 14). Can Landor Phototex be used outside? Yes it can, the EX version is recommended for the applications. To improve ink fade resistance liquid protective coatings are recommended. Tests have shown outdoor un-laminated longevity to be 6-12 months depending the inks used. Is Landor Phototex available outside the UK? Landor Phototex is available throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Landor Phototex Phototex Handbook_v3.indd 16-17 Page 16 Landor Phototex Page 17 30/6/14 16:03:42 Landor Phototex Disclaimer Can Landor Phototex be recycled? Landor UK Ltd, any and all representatives: Landor Phototex is manufactured in line with environmental concerns and is supported by a statement from the manufacturers: ‘We, the inventors and manufacturers of the Landor Phototex Ink Jet Media can confirm, based on our understanding, test and studies that our material is environmentally safe and bio-degradable over time.’ Landor UK Ltd has complete confidence in Landor Phototex adhering without peeling or wrinkling on the vast majority of clean, dust free, sealed flat surfaces. Due to the unknown variable conditions of where Landor Phototex is being placed or used, Landor UK Ltd and all its partners representing Landor UK Ltd cannot guarantee that under any and all circumstance the material will stay completely intact, and that no adhesive will remain on the surface when removed or that your surface will not adhere to the Landor Phototex wallpaper. There are a number of variables out of our control; textured/painted walls, age and type of paint used, dirt, undulation, dryness or dampness of the intended surface, no primers used and/or heat (making the adhesive more tacky) from the sun when removing off a window or surface. Phototex’s fabric material and patented adhesive have no phthalates in their composition. The manufacturers of Landor Phototex work towards the following categories for recycling with its characteristics of: • Backing liner – Category 2 • Material – Category 5 • When inks and Lamination are added they can move Landor Phototex to Category 12. If there is any doubt about the condition of the wall, its moisture level or roughness of the surface, we strongly recommend that one full drop is hung on the wall and then assessed after 24 hours. Surfaces with a heavy texture, such as Artex or brickwork, are not recommended as they are more difficult to adhere to; smooth surfaces are better suited to adhering Landor Phototex to. Categories are explained below: Category 2: Paper – including newsprint, ledger paper, computer paper, corrugated cardboard and mixed paper. Category 5: Textiles – including no reusable clothing, upholstery and pieces of fabric. Category 12: Chemicals – including acids, bases, solvents, fuels, lubricating oils, and medicines.
