Nipissing Exams
I thought I would share a moment from my first exam week with you, because you
all share so much with me. It was the year 2006, and I loved Savage Garden. I
would listen to their songs and sing along with them as I studied. It was my way of
coping with stress. My roommates soon turned me onto music they enjoyed,
having heard "I Want You" too many times that week. One memory that I will never
forget is having to rewrite my World History notes because they were so messy. It
was an 8:30 class and I never had the energy to write neatly. I would have those
"half-asleep" moments where I would daze off and end up with a big squiggle on
my page where my notes should be. I still have those messy notes, complete with
doodles of hearts with "Emily + Chad Michael Murray" written in them. In the end, I
did really well on the exam and it affirmed my choice to be a History
major. I look back now and think about all the times I didn't like studying,
and I'm grateful that I never gave up. So my exam advice to you is to
believe in yourself, work hard, but don’t forget to laugh now and then! I
hope that you all look back on your first week of exams someday and
relish in the memories. In addition, since all of you share photos with
me, I thought I would share one with you. The photo on the left is of
me in Dec. 2006, right after that History exam. It is always crazy to
think how far we have come and how much farther we can go!

Tips and Advice:
Food for Thought: Eating Your Way to
Success
Chicken
Soup for
the GEN1 Soul
During exam time, it’s important to eat the foods that will
keep your brain awake and focused on what you need to do.
Myths and Facts about
Multiple Choice

!""#$%&&'('#)*+,'-#.%/#0""1-##
First, make
sure you control your intake of food and avoid
overeating or binging.
Instead, eat small, frequent meals to keep your

blood sugar and energy levels steadier. That being said, don’t just rely
<%&&%=#>?#%@#A5B'C%%D#>@E'*#FGH2!I#5@E#
on snack
foods, as they won’t energize you the same way a real meal

Myth: your prof doesn’t want you to succeed or is
trying to trick you.
Fact: the professor is trying to get the best out of you
based on what they feel you should be able to
understand given the course content.
Myth: don’t change your answer
Fact: Look over questions and change your answer if
you feel surer about another response when
you are reviewing.
Myth: If in doubt, choose (c)
Fact: There is no reason to think that (c) is better than
another answer.
Myth: Since you picked (b) five times in a row, (b)
won’t be the answer again
Fact: Tests created by a computer from an electronic
test bank and so the computer doesn’t think
about patterns.
Myth: Save the answer sheet until the end
Fact: This is a mistake as you can be caught without
enough time to finish it and if you transpose answers
incorrectly because you are rushed or tired, your mark
can be more severely damaged. Fill it in as you go.
Consider foods like: frozen entrees, bean soup, peanut butter,
cold cut sandwiches, tuna and chicken salads, and other convenient
foods. You’ll want foods that emphasize protein over carbs, as
protein-rich meals will keep you on an energy high. For example, try
cheese, crackers, and skim milk, instead of just crackers and juice. Top
off your pasta with grilled chicken instead of just pasta and sauce; eat
up some eggs; limit your caffeine; drink water! Water is extra
important at this time. Keep a cup of water on your desk and keep
drinking water as you study (not pop!).
When it comes to snacking, make yourself get up to get food
and don’t bring it back to your study place. Eat snacks in the kitchen
or away from your desk, but make sure you are eating healthy snacks!
What’s a healthy snack? Try nuts, raisins, cheese sticks, low-fat yogurt,
fresh fruit and veggies, frozen juice bars, oatmeal, low-fat popcorn,
and caffeine-free herbal teas. Also, remember that hunger and thirst
are easily confused, so try drinking a glass of water instead of grabbing
a cereal bar!
Often when you are hungry, you will end up eating just
because you need a study break! On your way to grab a snack from
the kitchen though, look for the real signs of hunger, like a stomach
grumble. If you aren’t really feeling hungry, try to do something
physical, like going for a quick walk or doing some pushups! Getting
active will also help to make you feel more alert and distractions are
needed during intense periods of study. Fuel your brain for a
successful exam period!

SCANTRON?
Is your final exam in either in whole or in part multiple-choice? Well, then chances are you
are going to have a scantron card to fill out! Scantron is the brand name for the format used
for multiple-choice tests. Professors are able to use a computer program to create their test
and the answer sheet and then by scanning the cards, students’ results are determined.
So what do you DO with a scantron card?
1) Make sure you write your name on it. Some will ask you to bubble it in, others will let
you just write it in at the side.
2) Put your student number on the card. Fill in any other information, such as the date of
the exam and the course code as asked on the scantron card.
4) Begin answering questions! Make sure you fully fill in the square or circle for your
answer. Half filled boxes don’t count and can confuse the program resulting in wrong
answers.
5) Make sure the number for the question you are answering on the test corresponds to the
number you are filling in on the scantron card (for example, if question 12 is A, then
ensure number 12 on the scantron card has A coloured in).
6) If you realize your numbers and bubbles are off, ask for another card or talk to your prof.

Nipissing Exams
What can I expect when I go to my exams?
Finding Past Exams:
Did you know you can DO that?!
Are you interested in seeing the REAL exam that
students who !""#$%&&'('#)*+,'-#.%/#0""1-##

just a few years ago?
Trying to figure out what kinds of
2%*34#.56-#72#8!.#9:;#
questions to expect on an exam? Not really sure about how your
<%&&%=#>?#%@#A5B'C%%D#>@E'*#FGH2!I#5@E#
prof writes a test? Here it is, your link to past exams! Check out
3=+33'*JK%>L>C'#>@E'*#FGH2!2+M+??+@(I#
http://exams.nipissingu.ca/ to find a list of different subject
areas with exams posted. You can go in and search by course
code to see if there is a past exam from YOUR class!
Note that sometimes the exams are dated (some are from
10 years ago!), but it still offers a frame of reference about what
kinds of questions were asked, what kinds of material you need
to know for the course, or just practice questions. If there is an
exam by your professor but in a different class, it may have
some insight into how they structure an exam. Check it out –
you never know what you’ll learn or find!
If you can’t find the website above, follow these
instructions:
1. Go to the university library’s website (eclibrary.ca)
2. Click on “Internet Links” in the Resources column of
options.
3. Choose “Nipissing Links” form the list at the top of the page
4. Click on link number 7, “Past Exams”
5. Select your subject area and you’re on your way!
Remember, this is just another study tool, NOT a means for
you to avoid studying. Just because the exam was that way 5
years ago, or even last year, that doesn’t mean that you will be
writing the same exam this year. You need to use other study
skills and tools that you have. Consider asking your professor if
it is worthwhile to look at the exam from the course the
previous year! Also, talk to your TA about the exam to see what
they are looking for.
What Did I Get??
How can I find out what my final mark are?
All of your final marks will be posted on WebAdvisor
after your write your final exams. Some marks will be
posted sooner than others, depending on how quickly
your professors marks your exams and submits the
marks. Look under “Summary of Grades” to see your
final mark in a course! If you have questions or
concerns, email your professor as soon as possible.
Where to go, what to know and everything else you
might wonder about when it comes to writing an exam
at Nipissing!
1. Know the date, time, and location of your exam. If
you’re more than 1 hour late, you can’t get into the
exam room.
2. You need to have either your student card or
government-issued ID to write the exam
3. You CAN have a pen/pencil and anything
authorized specifically by your professors, as well
as a water bottle
- Bring an extra pen or pencil and eraser
4. You CAN’T have any aid, laptops or others, unless
authorized by the examiner on the exam paper.
You CAN’T have a backpack, pencil or laptop
case, purse, coat, cellphone, mp3 player, etc. at
your desk
You CAN’T bring in food – only water bottles are
permitted
5. If you bring in an unauthorized item, note there is
NO secure storage, but you will be asked to leave
your belongings at the front of the exam room.
Really, it’s better to leave this stuff at home.
Arrive early to your exam. If your exam is in the gym,
there will be a list posted with the course code for each
class writing an exam in that room. Find your class and
look for your name (alphabetically listed). Next to your
name is a number and that indicates where you are
sitting. When you enter the gym, each seat will have a
post-it note number on it and that is how you figure out
where to sit.
You won’t be allowed to leave the exam in the first
HOUR, even if you finish. After the first hour people
will be allowed to leave – but this doesn’t mean you
should be done! You have 3 hours for a reason.
To get extra paper, raise your hand and your
professor or proctor will bring it to you. If you need to
go to the bathroom, you will be escorted as well.
If you require accommodations for your exam, you
need to have submitted this to Student Development
Services already. Be aware of this if you need
accommodations next semester!
Finally, RSAC = Athletics Centre (not in the school).
C_Gym = Canadore Gym, A110 (in the school).
Good luck!

It’s the end of fall semester, things are winding down, sure it’s a little
crazy right now as I rush to finish those last minute assignments that weren’t
due in November (okay, there aren’t MANY of them, but I didn’t even look
at them until I flipped my calendar and saw that they were due!), but exams
are coming up and my countdown until holidays is officially less than 30
(when it started at... well... maybe 100 Days...). I can’t wait to see my friends, I
can’t wait to leave residence, I can’t wait to not have to worry about school—
I just can’t wait. And do you want to know what that means? I don’t think I
care so much about school anymore.
