Newton Public Library presents tips & tricks

Freeware
(from "free" and "software") is computer software
that is available for use at no cost.
• The program is usually a restricted or slimmed
down version of a pay version.
• The program is usually filled with advertisements.
Sometimes for other products the developer sells.
• Sometimes the person who wrote it will provide a
link for you to donate.
• "This program may be freely distributed"; "You may
copy or distribute this software free of charge”
Adobe PDF, Google Hangouts, yahoo messenger, MSN messenger
Shareware
The term Shareware (also known as “trialware” or
“demoware”) refers to proprietary software that is
provided to users without payment on a trial basis.
• the owner of the copyright allows the user to freely use
the computer program for a certain period of time, for
purposes of tests and/or evaluations.
• when time is up, the user must choose between buying
the license(rights) that allows him to unlimited
utilization of the program and returning and/or
"deleting" the copy.
Winzip, Cuteftp, Getright
Open-source software
• Open-source software (OSS) is computer
software that is available in source code
form.
• the source code and certain other rights
normally reserved for copyright holders
are provided under a software license that
permits users to study, change, improve
and at times also to distribute the
software.
ClamAV, FreeNAS , Ubuntu , Open Office, Thunderbird
In the Real World
The differences between the three models can be clearly seen in the
kind of software that is available as freeware, shareware, or open
source:
• Freeware is usually a very small program, released by a student
or enthusiast.
• Shareware is usually a mid-sized utility or application, written
by a professional developer or small software company. The
developer or publisher does not have the resources to market it,
so they release it as shareware with a "try-before-you-buy"
business model.
• Open source spans the gamut, but the largest "free" software
out there are all open source--Linux, FreeBSD, PostgreSQL,
Apache. Before the advent of VCs in the "free software industry,"
collaborative development around a shared code base was the
only way a large free application could be built.

Websites to save you money: shoplocal
Wouldn’t you love to have the weekly ad for lots
of stores in your community (electronics, clothing,
shoes, furniture, home and garden)—all indexed,
organized and updated for you? That’s exactly
what you’ll find at ShopLocal.com .
In just minutes you can assess what’s on sale, and
who has the best deal this week on the items you
need.
Websites to save you money: the Bargainist
If all you want is a simple, reliable listing of the hottest
online bargains, sales, coupons and freebies,
then Bargainist.com is for you.
Recent Bargainist sightings: 40% off Citizen watches at
Amazon.com, $10 tanks and tees at Eddie Bauer, up to 70%
off at American Eagle plus free shipping.
No need to join, register or pay a cent. Just check back
often—the site is updated several times each day.
Websites to save you money: Freecycle
Think of Freecycle.org as the nation’s biggest swap meet—
where no money ever exchanges hands.
•It’s organized into local groups in many communities in the
U.S., and members trade items within their communities.
•Want to find someone to come and pick up items you can no
longer use and just want to get rid of? This is the place.
•The best thing about Freecycle: It keeps furniture, toys,
appliances and many other goods out of landfills and gets
them to places where they can be used and enjoyed. Go
to Freecycle.org and join the group in your area.
Websites to save you money: Ebay
If you have a collection or something that will take a special kind of
person to buy, then Ebay is great because you'll reach a much larger
group of people than just the locals on craigslist.
However, if you are selling your kid's old shoes then you'll be
competing with millions of other easily shippable old shoes which
means your profits will be far less than they would have been if you
sold on Craigslist or even a garage sale + shipping costs and haste.
•Be aware that you are paying a fee for each item you try to sell so be certain that
you are valuing the item and shipping costs correctly the first time or you may be
out some money in the end.
•If you are going to use ebay you are going to need to sign up for
paypal to make purchases with credit/debit/prepaid cards
Websites to save you money: Craigslist
•I could spend an entire hour detailing the good/bad/ugly
of craigslist but for the purposes of this class just think of
craigslist as being ebay only local and freecycle only not
free.
•You meet the seller/buyer in person in public and usually
pay cash. Arrangements are usually made for big ticket
items.
•Priceonomics. Have you ever tried to sell something on Craigslist but didn’t really have an
idea on how much to ask for it? Or have you tried to buy something online but weren’t sure
if you were getting the best deal? This is where Priceonomics comes in.
Websites to save you money: Amazon
•I think the logo says it best. You can just flat get it done.
Elegant, Simplistic, Reliable Amazon is my choice when it comes to
online shopping.
• Ebay can be a disorganized melee buying and selling can be very
involved.
•The best price for your item from many professional sources.
•No fulfillment or questionable shipping hassles.
•They take your credit card and give you bonuses for signing up for
theirs, they offer multiple types of services.
• all in all… I’m sold on amazon the same way I’m sold on Google for
my online services.
Websites to save you money:
Big Box shopping
The huge benefit of shopping at big box stores online is that usually …
•sometimes have better deals than on the shelf
• bigger selection than what is on the shelf
• free shipping directly to your local store
• you pay online or at your local store (no strangers in back alleys)

BLACK FRIDAY Death Count! ! !
The website totals Black Friday deaths and injuries
back to 2006, each with a link to a news story
about the event. A scroll through will leave you
shocked at the unfortunate amount of shootings,
stabbings and stampedes that have landed holiday
shoppers in the hospital — if they're lucky
– 2013 saw 14 Injured, 1 Dead (car accident on the way home)
– The most injuries happened in 2011, with two separate
pepper spray incidents injuring 20 shoppers each.
– But 2008 was the most dangerous year, with three
people killed in the rush to find the best deal.

Cyber Monday
• The term "Cyber Monday" was first coined in 2005
and it has since turned into the single biggest
shopping day of the year for online retailers.
Consumers spent nearly $1.5 billion online on Cyber
Monday last year, the third year in a row that sales
topped the $1 billion mark,
according to data from comScore.
• Black Friday hadn't even ended before some retailers
started teasing their deals for Cyber Monday.
• Amazon announced plans to start its Cyber Monday
deals at midnight on Sunday and run promotions
throughout the week. Walmart did one better and
started its "Cyber Week" sales on Saturday.
Tips to avoid Cyber Monday Scams
http://mashable.com/2013/11/25/cyber-monday-security/
1. Don't Click on Pop-up Ads
• Though it may seem obvious, malicious pop-up
ads still pose one of the largest threats to web
shoppers.
• studies have shown that a large amount of
consumers will click on the account regardless of
its message. Be mindful of what pop-ups say, it
could be evidence of a security threat.

2. Keep Software Up-To-Date
• Though many systems automatically update
your software as new features become
available, it's important to keep your
programs as current as possible. To avoid
security holes, update apps and software
minimally once a week, as newer versions
appear.

http://mashable.com/2013/11/25/cyber-monday-security/
3. Use Strong Passwords
• An essential part of online security in any sense is
using strong passwords.
• Avoid Dictionary terms: This means no birthdays,
dog names or variations of "1234" for any of your
accounts. Try a password generator program.
• Don’t reuse passwords.
• The longer the better (8 characters at the least)
3b. If you ABSOLUTELY can’t remember your
passwords use a password manager service like
https://lastpass.com/ to remember it for you.

Telepathwords
Preventing weak passwords by reading
your mind
https://telepathwords.research.microsoft.com/
Is your password weaker than you thought?
• To help you find out, the Telepathwords weak-password prevention
system will try to guess each character of your password before you
type it.
• ✘: indicates that the character you typed was one of
Telepathwords guesses.
• ✔: indicates that the character you typed was one Telepathwords
could not guess.
• If your password has few characters that Telepathwords could not
guess, attackers may also find your password easy to guess.

4. Install Antivirus and Anti-Spyware software
• When shopping, you don't want others to be
able to track what sites you're visiting and
what information you're entering online.
Computer Evils
• Identity Theft – take your financial data
• Virus, worms & Trojans – damage your
computer
• Spyware – watch your everyclick
• Hackers – access your data
• Phishing & Online fraud – fool you into giving
way your valuable information
• Spam – Massive amounts of useless/harmful
emails
• Inappropriate Websites – con you into going
where you know you don’t need to go.

5. Enable 'Timeouts' on Mobile
• More and more consumers are doing the bulk of
their holiday shopping on mobile phones.
• If you're one of those consumers, make sure to
enable a lock screen password, in case your device
is lost or stolen.
• If your phone isn't timed out, you're leaving the
keys to your kingdom to whoever picks it up.
• Enable 2 step verification so that a hacker would be
forced to have your password and cell phone to log
in.

http://mashable.com/2013/11/25/cyber-monday-security/
6. Use a Secure Connection
• any and all online financial transactions should
take place through a secure, private Wi-Fi
connection, as opposed to using the more
vulnerable free Wi-Fi in a coffee shop or library.
• 6b. Don’t just blindly follow shortened links.
Lenthen them and google them for fact checking.

7. Avoid Email Advertisements
• Your inbox is likely swarming with holiday
promotions from all of your favorite (and likely
least favorite) brands.
• To avoid being hacked, the CIS recommends you
always enter the shop's URL in your browser,
rather than following the links contained in an
email.

8. Shop at Companies You Know
• Before you buy from a merchant on Amazon,
Etsy or Ebay, check their rating and number of
sales. Make sure they have good return
policies and clearly posted contact
information.
• If worried, you can always check on a
businesses legitimacy through the Better
Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.org/)

9. Use Credit, Not Debit
• There are more security protections on your credit
card that may not exist while using your debit
card, should your info be taken

10. Ensure Your Site Is Secure
• If you are entering your financial information
on a webpage, make sure the URL begins with
"https" as opposed to "http" or has a lock in
your browser's search bar.

11. Be Wary of Charity Sites
• Though the holidays are frequently the most
popular time to make donations to charity, you
should check the legitimacy of your charity's
website.
• "Fraudulent sites pop up during disasters and
holidays like clockwork. Be alert,"

12. Check Your Location and Privacy Settings
• Many apps and websites will automatically share
your GPS location by default.
• If your entire family is out of the house,
broadcasting your location might not be the best
idea.
• Sometimes, apps will change your settings once
downloaded. Check what services your
downloads have access to in your phone's privacy
settings.

13. Check Your Statements Frequently
• some hackers will do very low level theft once
obtaining your information, charging small
amounts to your credit card to avoid detection.
• Stay on top of your account statements and keep
a record of how much you spend and where.

14. Add Browser Extensions and Security Apps
• Pop-up blockers and malware detection extensions
will add an extra layer to your security this season.
• Plugins / Ad-Ons / Whatevs:
