WELCOME TO ISSUE 9
OF THE MCM ADVOCATE
27 YEARS OF MARINE CONSTRUCTION
MANAGEMENT
- THE OWNER’S ADVOCATE
- THE CAPTAIN’S ALLY
They say that “variety is the spice of life”.
Well if that is indeed true, then things are
pretty spicy at MCM!
As you will read in this edition, at one end of
the spectrum we have signed a stunning ~60m
Vitruvius designed all-aluminium motor yacht to
be built by Feadship (our largest to date). While
at the other end, we have launched a lovely
11.5m limousine tender built by Hodgdon Yachts.
In between we have been heavily involved with
a series of enormously successful light weight,
carbon performance sailing yachts we have
been doing at Baltic Yachts as illustrated with the
launching of the 35.3m DORYAN and the 35.1m
NIKATA. Both stunning looking vessels boasting
fabulous performance coupled with Superyacht
comfort and luxury. Additionally, there’s the
elegant and timeless Spirit of Tradition Hoek
designs - the 39m ATALANTE and the 27.5m
Truly Classic. We have another groundbreaking
project that due to her highly innovative nature is
confidential at present, but we hope to bring you
news on her in due course.
SAILING PERFORMANCE IS FAST AND
COMFORTABLE. LIGHT ON THE HELM AND
QUICK TO ACCELERATE SHE IS A REAL
PLEASURE TO STEER.
You will also read about MCM refits from Turkey
to the UK; racing we’ve been doing on our yachts
in the Med, Caribbean and the UK - along with the
successes of MCM’s Yacht Management Division
– the portfolio continues to develop.
We are also pleased to introduce you to our
delightful and knowledgeable new staff members
Jon and Caitlin and to showcase our expanded
offices in Newport.
We hope you enjoy this edition and look forward to
seeing you on the waterfront in the coming year.

DORYAN
DELIVERS
When first introduced to what was to become the
DORYAN project I had experience on similar sized
yachts at the proposed builder, Baltic Yachts and had
also previously worked with the Italian stylists at
Nauta Yachts; my expectation was for the ultra-light
‘café racer’ style of yacht for which those teams are
best known.
Photo : Jesús Renedo
However, two or three group meetings into the project and
it became clear that this was a new and quite different
concept – a real, family safe, blue water cruiser that apart
from carrying all of the on-board amenities could still
boast sparkling sailing performance. Judel Vrolijk were
tasked with the Naval Architecture, developing a powerful,
comfortable and performing hull shape.
DORYAN was built to the highest standards at Baltic
Yachts in Finland. The hull shape, by design, allowed for
a slightly more generous displacement but all of Baltic’s
expertise was required to keep the project on weight
budget as the full complement of machinery and systems
plus the detailed teak interior went on board. The Nauta
designed interior has many comfortable spaces from the
huge Owner’s suite forward to the comfortable aft crew
accommodation. The exterior styling works superbly well,
topped off by the Owner’s choice of metallic red topsides
paint. One of the special challenges was the Owner’s
request for a large fixed carbon bimini over the guest
cockpit. The structural expertise of JV, styling input from
Nauta and Baltic’s building expertise pulled it off. No small
achievement on a 116ft sloop.
Sailing performance is fast and comfortable. Light on the
helm and quick to accelerate she is a real pleasure to
steer. A tall swept spreader rig from Southern Spars, fitted
with a furling boom, is elegant looking and truly functional.
Sails are from North Sails including furling gennakers.
A unique feature is the captive winches for the heavily
loaded main and jib sheets. However, in lighter conditions
the jibsheets can be alternatively handled on the Harken
cockpit winches. Every effort has been made to make the
yacht safe and easy to handle by a small crew, without
interfering with the guests’ relaxation.
The project benefitted from the beginning from having the
experience and input of the Owner’s crew, coming from
several seasons cruising on board the previous smaller
yacht. Also the Owner and his wife were accessible and
excellent decision makers throughout the build. I was
fortunate indeed to be part of such a high powered build
team and I believe that the finished yacht, DORYAN,
speaks fully to the success of the project.

ATALANTE
UNDERWAY
Early summer 2015 saw the launch of the 127ft
ATALANTE in Zaandam, The Netherlands.
Photo : Rick Tomlinson
This lovely yacht is the second for this Owner (the first
was the well-known 90 footer of the same name), and
the Owner selected the entire team from the build
of the first ATALANTE to reproduce their magic here:
Naval architecture, interior and exterior by Hoek Design,
construction by Claasen Shipyards, rig by Offshore Spars,
sails from North Sails and Owner’s Representative Nigel
Ingram of MCM.
Photo : Cory Silken Photography
ATALANTE will head to the Caribbean for the winter
and will soon enough strut her stuff on the Superyacht
Regatta circuit.
Photo : Rick Tomlinson
Reports from onboard are equally enthusiastic about her
very comfortable interior, her light responsive handling
and turn of speed under sail.
Photo : Cory Silken Photography
After her successful trials and shakedown delivery
to Palma, ATALANTE was feted at a large and very
enjoyable christening ceremony in the wonderful old
port of Valetta, Malta. She has since been cruising in the
Eastern Med with Owner and family on board, and will
soon be preparing to head to Monaco where she will star
in the MYS.

REPORTS FROM ONBOARD ARE EQUALLY
ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT HER VERY
COMFORTABLE INTERIOR, HER LIGHT

NIKATA
LAUNCHED
35.1M BALTIC/JUDEL
VROLIJK
This stunning performance cruiser was launched at
Baltic Yachts in Finland in early August 2015.
Naval architecture by Judel Vrolijk, interior and exterior
styling (including interior decoration) by Nauta Yachts, rig
package from Southern Spars, sails from North Sails and
Owner’s representative Nigel Ingram of MCM. NIKATA
will be handed over in September to her experienced
yachtsman Owner, then heading to the Caribbean for a
Christmas cruise before competing in the Caribbean 600
in January 2016.
Delivered on time (and possibly even more importantly
for this type of project, on weight) this build represents
the third collaboration between Nauta, Baltic and MCM.
This is a truly stunning looking yacht inside and out;
a properly dual purpose performance sailor which will
be equally comfortable cruising with friends and family
or thrashing around the regatta circuit with the best of
them.
Photo : Nigel Ingram
Her exterior features the modern look with unusually
clean and uncluttered lines. On deck NIKATA features a
plumb bow, aggressively low coach roof profile, acres of
teak decking including large sunbathing and entertaining
areas, lots of glass, a huge shallow cockpit and aft
steering positions well outboard. The hull, superstructure
and rig are painted differing tones of metallic grey,
cruising sails grey, race sails black 3Di Raw. Every effort
has gone into the highly optimized rig package developed
with Southern Spars and in close co-operation with North
Sails. The interior is a different world of calm; bleached
oak joinerwork with brushed stainless steel accents,
complemented by luxurious fabrics and highlighted with
the Owner’s art collection.
EARLY STAGES
60M VITRUVIUS/FEADSHIP
We are embarking on our first project with Philippe
Briand under his Vitruvius brand and the renowned
shipyard Feadship in the form of a strikingly
handsome ~60m motor yacht – MCM’s largest to
date.
She will be powered by two MTU’s to give her splendid
cruising speed, however the lightweight aluminium hull
and superstructure will ensure that she will also be
economical and easily have transatlantic range.
The general arrangement has been developed by Claudio
Cicconetti of Genoa.
The interior design and details will be a balance of
contemporary elegance, a “beach house on the water”.
Fluidity, transparency and modernity are the words
Philippe aptly uses to describe this remarkable project.
She will be built by Feadship’s De Vries yard in Aalsmeer,
The Netherlands.
Naturally, we are very excited to be involved with this
exceptional team project.
TENDER
LAUNCH
HODGDON 11.4M TENDER
LAUNCHED
The 11.4 m tender (MCM #197) that we wrote about
in our last edition is now launched and has been
delivered to her mothership.
With her beautiful white paint job and elegant lines
created by Michael Peters, she certainly has a graceful
profile. The guest cabin of this limousine is beautifully
appointed with comfortable leather seating, a full
audiovisual system, air-conditioning, a refrigerator and a
small bar. A perfect conveyance to go from ship to shore
in comfort, speed and style.
This vessel is a perfect sibling to the mothership and the
builder’s attention to detail is evident everywhere you
look. I’m sure the Owners and the guests will enjoy their
trips on board.

The general arrangement that has a guest cockpit
forward of the cabin allows guests to either sit inside in
the protective cocoon of the cabin or open the sliding
door and go forward to enjoy the fresh air with privacy
and comfort. The aft helm (under an electrically actuated
hard top) is arranged in such a way that the crew have
an uninhibited view forward to operate the vessel safely.

CONSTRUCTION
TRULY CLASSIC 90 #3
Peter Wilson has been making regular visits to
Claasen Shipyards Zaandam facility to inspect the
construction of MCM #191 the 27.4m Hoek designed
Truly Classic hull number 3.
As we go to press, this yacht has a full complement
of systems engineers, technicians and cabinetmakers
working feverishly in order to have this yacht completed
early in 2016.
We are taking advantage of our considerable experience
with Claasen having built Truly Classic 90 #1 KEALOHA
and #2 ATALANTE, LIONHEART and the new 38.7m
ATALANTE with them, so the knowledge and betterments
gained as a result are being implemented on this fine
yacht.
The interior is a traditional raised panel Sapele
Mahogany design that perfectly matches this spirit of
tradition yacht. Behind the elegant paneling one will
find state-of-the-art systems and equipment being
expertly installed and providing leading edge navigation,
communication, audiovisual and mechanical systems –
all ensuring that this fine yacht will be able to travel far
afield, as is the owner’s intention, in safety and style.
All Photo’s : Peter Wilson
We are very much looking forward to her shakedown
cruise in the Netherlands in the chilly Spring, before
heading either up to the Baltic or down to the Med for
her inaugural season.

CONSTRUCTION
HINCKLEY: TALARIA 48
Peter Wilson is managing the construction of MCM
#202, our first project with the famous Hinckley yard
in Bar Harbor, Maine, USA.
This takes the form of their Talaria 48 twin-engine
motor launch design. Powered by two Volvo D13 800
HP engines (in lieu of the standard 725HP engines), she
will certainly have a fine turn of speed – and her elegant
lines and well proven design will also turn heads as she
motors elegantly by.
Her interior will have the richness and warmth one gets
by using cherry. The style is a nice blend of a traditional
stile and rail detail coupled with the client’s selection of
elegant fabrics and stone to create a beach house on the
water.
On the technology front this handsome vessel is very
well appointed – she will boast a full Raymarine GS
series “glass bridge” navigation system and upgraded
engine interface to the Raymarine system as well as full
WiFi, communications, radar and TV receivers.
SISTERSHIP IMAGE

She will be delivered south later this year to be enjoyed
by her owners through the winter months under the
Florida sunshine.

PROGRESSING
46M KETCH
The development of the Fontaine designed blue
water ketch (MCM #189) project continues.
The drawing development is extremely mature and the
renderings of each area are being produced.
The naval architecture, engineering, exterior design and
interior are all done by Ted Fontaine and his team at
Fontaine Design Group.
We are currently in the process of dotting the I’s and
crossing the T’s on the final details and specifications
and then will look forward to selecting the builder to
create this long-legged, oceangoing yacht to take the
Owner, his family and friends to the far corners of the
planet.

39.6M BALTIC/REICHEL
PUGH
The 14th August 2015 marked an important
landmark for this Richel Pugh/Nauta project as the
two hull halves (with most of the bulkheads and
internal longitudinal structure in place) were joined
together at Baltic Yacht’s Jakobstad facility.
The lamination stage of the project has presented
some challenges for Baltic with a highly sophisticated
lamination layup necessary to reach the strict weight
goals, and some complex and highly loaded features of
the structure.
with work continuing on the remaining areas.
The joined hull will move immediately to the fit out bay
where installation of the systems and then interior will
move ahead at full speed.
Southern Spars is well underway on the highly optimized
mast in New Zealand.
This large high performance racer/cruiser will be a head
turner everywhere she goes after her spring 2016 launch
and early summer delivery to her Owner.
Photo : Nigel Ingram
Close by at Baltic’s Bosund facility much of the super
lightweight interior is completed and ready for installation
Nauta, in close co-operation with the Owner and his wife,
have produced a calm, sophisticated interior featuring
mahogany furniture, variously textured painted surfaces
and many different luxurious fabrics throughout.
REFIT
M/Y HANA REFIT
COMPLETED IN TURKEY
We continued our relationship with the Owner of the
43m CRN displacement motor yacht HANA through
a 2014/2015 refit and yard period managed by Peter
Wilson.
The thrust of the work was to have the entire yacht
repainted from the bottom of the keel to the top of the
satellite domes.
After conducting some in-depth due diligence, the
decision was made to do this work at Proteksan in
Istanbul (now Proteksan Turquoise Yachts Inc.). There
was also a host of other work undertaken in parallel
which included many cosmetic upgrades and interior
work, as well as mechanical, systems electrical/
electronics upgrades and service work.
The Owner was closely involved in the project and went
to the yard on a number of occasions to inspect and
enjoy the process.
The Owner commented that the after the repaint, she
looked “better than new”. A great result.

REFIT
S/Y LIONHEART
The 43.7m J-Class sailing yacht LIONHEART (Hoek/
Claasen/MCM) returned to Pendennis Shipyard in
England for her five year ABS survey.
With the yacht scheduled to be out of the water for
at least three months for the survey and with the rigs
already scheduled to be pulled it made sense to also
paint the hull and spars.
In addition to being painted the rig was completely
disassembled; spars, standing rigging and spreaders
ultrasound tested. Deck work included some teak deck
replacement and the removal of some unused deck
fittings. The cap-rail was pulled to ensure proper paint
adhesion at the bulwarks/gunwhale joint and similarly
the deck margin board was replaced so that the
scuppers could be painted beyond the margin board/
scupper seam. The hull paint job included fairing, Awlgrip
buildup and topcoat system finished with new graphics,
fresh cavita lines and a final clear coat.
Pendennis, Captain Toby Brand and the rest of the crew
worked tirelessly through the refit to make sure that
LIONHEART was on the starting line for the season’s first
race of the J-Class regatta held in Falmouth in June.
Photo : Rick Tomlinson
Engineering works included an overhaul of the hydraulics
system, fine tuning of the steering system and the
addition of a larger wheel to lighten the helm, various
performance upgrades and the usual servicing of
mechanical and electrical systems.
RACING UPDATE
LIONHEART
After her hard fought win in Falmouth LIONHEART wrapped up the 2015 J Class
racing schedule with an equally hard fought second place in the Royal Yacht
Squadron’s two hundredth anniversary regatta out of Cowes at the end of July.
Three of these magnificent yachts provide a stunning spectacle racing in this,
their ancestral home. This time around it was Velsheda’s turn to take the overall
honours winning all four races in varying conditions with LIONHEART not finding the
predominantly reaching Solent courses so much to her liking.
On the final day however the wind direction gave the RYS the opportunity to set a
better windward/leeward course which provided as exciting and hard contested
race as anyone could remember. The lead changed multiple times in a
very close quarters encounter with LIONHEART coming out on top
but pipped for the first place on handicap by Velsheda; many
congratulations to them for a fine display of J Class sailing.
LIONHEART did enough to take second overall and the
race made a suitable finale to the year’s racing.
Photo : Rick Tomlinson
LIONHEART is now relaxing in her other role
as a cruising yacht, enjoying the summer
in the Western Isles of Scotland with
owner and family on board. Focus
is now on the America’s Cup
J Class event in Bermuda
and MCM’s Nigel Ingram
will be working hard,
with the Owner, on a
two year program to
get LIONHEART fully
prepared and on the
top of her form for
that event.
RACING WINS
MARIE RACING – HER WINNING WAYS
CONTINUE…
The owner of MARIE has been enjoying both cruising and racing on
this magnificent ketch.
In 2015 she competed extremely successfully in the Antigua
Superyacht Challenge, the Loro Piana Virgin Gorda regatta, the
St. Barth’s Bucket, Sardinia Superyacht Regatta and the Palma
Superyacht Cup in Palma.
As a result of retaining an excellent racing crew that have
sailed on board for the last couple of years (including Peter
and Nigel), ably assisted by the permanent crew members,
she won her class in Virgin Gorda, was narrowly beaten
out of first in St. Barth’s and achieved a clean sweep in
Palma – winning every race!

WSA WINNER
WISP LORO PIANA REGATTA, VIRGIN GORDA
WISP WINS WORLD
SUPERYACHT AWARDS
BY MICHAEL TYRWHITT-DRAKE
In March 2015 the 47.6m sloop WISP made her
regatta debut in Virgin Gorda, BVI at the Loro Piana
regatta hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
Being her first regatta, MCM was tasked with not only
organizing the usual accommodation, transportation and
other crew logistics – but also forming a race crew. Mike
Tyrwhitt-Drake, Director of MCM’s Yacht Management
Division and dedicated yacht manager for WISP
contacted key people involved in the build and fittingout of the yacht who made up the core group of both
excellent sailors and technical expertise (many thanks
to Royal Huisman, Rondal, North Sails and Hoek Design)
supplemented by sailors from New England, Ireland,
England and Israel, we were truly an international team.
Knowing that we would need to make some rig
adjustments and as this would be the first time the
yacht had been pressed to her full potential we wisely
allowed three full days of practice and this certainly
paid off. Going into the first race we found the best sail
combinations, sheet leads stay tensions for each point
of sail, as we had practiced all the key manoeuvres
previously. Captain Guy Hayward was impressed with
how the yacht performed. What we didn’t know was how
WISP would perform against the competition
The regatta was the first event to be handicapped using
the ORCsy measurement system and the entire fleet was
keen to see how the ratings would work. The ORC held
an open meeting at the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club and
there were many questions about the ratings, particularly
how anomalies in the placings would be handled. Any
doubts as to the effectiveness of the rating system
were soon to be erased as the regatta proved that the
rule works well and made for a very exciting last day of
racing with the winners of the event all being decided
on the final day. The ORC were also open to petitions as
demonstrated when the WISP afterguard’s request for a
change of Class so that she could race directly against
MCM’s magnificent Hoek designed, Vitter’s built ketch
MARIE was granted without fuss. This was a matchup
that the Owners and crews of both yachts were keen
to see play out on the water. With MARIE also being
managed by MCM and with Peter Wilson racing onboard
and Michael Tyrwhitt-Drake on board WISP there was
also some inter-office rivalry.
With perfect wind conditions, a beautiful venue and
excellent race organization by the Yacht Club Costa
Smeralda and the new ORCsy rating system the Loro
Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta was a tremendous
success.
WISP who ended up with a very respectable 2nd in class
and MARIE who won her class overall are scheduled to
race in the 2016 St Barth’s regatta and this will be their
first meeting since Virgin Gorda – we anticipate a close
series and look forward to a healthy rivalry in the coming
years.

RACING DEBUT
The world Superyacht Awards hosted in Amsterdam
again this year were as glamorous as ever - made
even more exciting for us as a result of the elegant
Hoek/Huisman/Rhoades Young sloop WISP being
awarded the 2015 Best Sailing Yacht Over 45m.
She was up against some extremely stiff competition, so
we were thrilled to learn that at the end of the day, the
judges felt that she was the very best example of her
type.
Congratulations goes to Royal Huisman Shipyard and
their craftsman for building such a fine vessel, to Hoek
Design for creating her elegant lines, to Rhoades/Young
for her light, comfortable and timeless interior – and of
course to the Owner whose clear vision and trust in the
team allowed us to meet and perhaps even exceed his
expectations.
Congratulations one and all!
SUCCESSFUL M/Y CALLIOPE SURVEYS
SOLD AND
YACHT
MANAGEMENT MANAGEMENT
RETAINED
This past year was a busy one for surveys, with
several yachts completing 5 and 10 year surveys.
KOKOMO successfully completed her 5 year Class and
Flag surveys over the fall and winter, and
AVENTURA completed her 10 year survey over the winter
in Florida.
As you will read in the SURVEYS section, several yachts
completed their special surveys under the careful
monitoring, management and guidance of MCM.
LIONHEART’s 5 year survey was completed this spring at
Pendennis in conjunction with her refit, all in time for the
busy regatta season.
With some interesting developments in VAT regulations,
MCM has worked closely with expert advisors to ensure
a belt-and-braces approach to ensure compliance and
minimize risk in this area where being ever-vigilant is
absolutely critical.
CALLIOPE recently completed her 5 year Class and Flag
surveys in Palma with the added challenges of a tight
timeframe and last minute pre-purchase survey. The
success of the survey and delivery to the new owner is
owed to the diligent team effort between the Captain and
crew, MCM, brokers, surveyors, and the shipyard.
MARIE
In June 2015 we were closely involved with the
sale of the 42m Bill Langan designed motor yacht
CALLIOPE built by Holland Jachtbouw under the
watchful eye of MCM’s Nigel Ingram (launched in
2010). She will be renamed NINKASI.
The original Owner sold the yacht to another MCM
longstanding client. MCM will continue managing the
yacht on behalf of her new Owner who has also retained
the entire crew – a reflection of the wonderful condition
to which they maintained the yacht over the last six
years. Captain Ian Insull and Chef Tony Gozra have
been with the yacht since her launch and were with the
previous Owner on his former yacht Cassiopeia also
designed by Bill Langan, built by HJB and managed by
MCM through build and operation.
We are tremendously pleased to retain operational
management of this magnificent yacht. Such retention
through a sale has also been the case with J-class
LIONHEART, M/Y AMITIÉ (ex. Trading Places IV) and
S/Y MARAE (ex. Paraiso) a testament to MCM’s sterling
reputation within the industry both as construction and
operational managers.
MCM now manage yachts registered in The Cayman
Islands, Bermuda, United Kingdom, USA, Marshall
Islands and the Netherlands and built to the following
Classification Society rules; Lloyds, DNV/GL and ABS.
Along with MLC regulations our compliance department
has been kept busy and with careful planning; mock Port
State Control inspections carried out on several yachts
and the diligence of their Captains all Class and Flag
surveys and several full PSC inspections were passed
with flying colors.
As we approach another Monaco Yacht Show we
anticipate steady growth in the sub 500GRT sector and
look forward to expanding into the over 500GT sector
and are planning accordingly.
CHARITABLE
SUPPORT
Each year we make annual donations to various
charities – this year we supported the following
groups based on their excellent work in the
international and national arena;
•Medical humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans
Frontières (MSF)
•The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
•The Marine Industry Cares Foundation raising money
to benefit local charities
•Avon 39 Breast Cancer Walk
•The American Heart Association
It is highly rewarding to be able to support these worthy
charities.
At press time, LADY B is completing her 5 year surveys
and MARIE and CHRISTOPHER will soon complete their 5
year surveys.
With all of the yachts having busy schedules, including
regattas and charters, pre-survey planning continues
to be critical in ensuring a successful and on-time
completion.
Photo : Peter Wilson
For MCM yachts which are available for charter 2014/15
saw a definite upturn in the charter market and were
active in The Bahamas, Caribbean, USA and Europe.

The last year has been exceptionally busy for MCM’s
Yacht Management Division.
NON CLASSED
BOATS
SURVEYED
Our MCM fleet does consist of a few non-classed
yachts.
They are well run and flagged under reputable Flag
States, but they do not have a mandatory survey
schedule.
No matter how well-intentioned the crew regarding the
maintenance of the yacht and her systems, there is no
substitute for a Class survey to prove the true condition
of the yacht.
This past year MCM has been in discussion with several
Class Societies to develop a system of surveys for our
non-classed yachts. We have been able to clearly lay out
the expectations of these surveys for the Class and the
yacht.
This has allowed these vessels to be voluntarily
maintained to the same level and standard as those that
are in Class. This has increased the safety of the yachts
as well as the value.
We have had positive feedback from Owners, crew and
insurance companies on this process.

BOAT SHOW SIGHTINGS
As always, we will be in attendance at the MONACO YACHT SHOW this year. Peter, Nigel and Mike will be busy looking at yachts and
equipment, meeting with clients and suppliers – and also showcasing two of our latest launches:
DORYAN, the stunning metallic red 35.5m Judel Vrolijk/Nauta design expertly built by the carbon composite experts at Baltic,
as well as the elegant 38.8m Hoek designed ATALANTE built by Claasen Shipyards.
We will also have a team at the FT. LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW, so if we miss you in Monaco, we’ll hopefully see you there!
